Check your ping before a game (on a mac)

This is a useful way to check your ping before even starting a game, particularly if you're in a place where your network can get clogged and laggy (like a college campus)

1. Open the following program: Applications/Utilities/Network Utility
2. Click the Ping tab.
3. Type in the following address to one of Riot's servers: 216.52.241.254 ( another one is 66.151.54.190 )
4. Then click Ping.

Wait 10 seconds for the results. Check the highlighted number to see your average ping. Mine is 83:
Ping has started ...

PING 216.52.241.254 (216.52.241.254): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 216.52.241.254: icmp_seq=0 ttl=244 time=83.147 ms
64 bytes from 216.52.241.254: icmp_seq=1 ttl=244 time=81.737 ms
64 bytes from 216.52.241.254: icmp_seq=2 ttl=244 time=81.843 ms
64 bytes from 216.52.241.254: icmp_seq=3 ttl=244 time=83.143 ms
64 bytes from 216.52.241.254: icmp_seq=4 ttl=244 time=82.998 ms
64 bytes from 216.52.241.254: icmp_seq=5 ttl=244 time=84.202 ms
64 bytes from 216.52.241.254: icmp_seq=6 ttl=244 time=86.987 ms
64 bytes from 216.52.241.254: icmp_seq=7 ttl=244 time=84.079 ms
64 bytes from 216.52.241.254: icmp_seq=8 ttl=244 time=83.432 ms
64 bytes from 216.52.241.254: icmp_seq=9 ttl=244 time=82.219 ms

--- 216.52.241.254 ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 10 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 81.737/83.379/86.987/1.444 ms
particularly if your internet connection isn't reliable.

This is the main problem of your funny thing ^^
IF my connection isn't reliable/stable, I have to do this test at least 500 times before I will probably do it on the right moment of a huge lagspike.

I've used my iPhone's internet for a while, and ported the internet to my MBP. Although the tests often came back as 150 ping (playable), i had huge lagspikes up to 450 or even 600 (just a few times) ms. I only managed to capture a lagespike with that test once.

Another remark:
It is a good test when you're on a new location to see what your ping is going to be before ruining your game

I see. I mostly had in mind my college internet connection, which didn't really have spikes, rather long, steady periods of lag.

If you're seeing long periods of high latency, you're seeing the effects of congestion on the network. Dorms tend to see a lot of this, cause all of the rooms in the dorm are pulling from the same pipe (even if it is a big pipe to begin with).

If you're seeing spikes, it means your connection is unreliable.

A cellphone network connection is very unreliable, as an example.

A quicker way to check your ping is to type `ping 216.52.241.254` in the terminal. I'll make a suggestion to the PvP.net UI team to add a ping indicator outside the game itself. Would be very useful, I think.

I've seen several threads in gd requesting such a feature. If you could directly suggest it, that would be fantastic!

While you're at it, maybe something that says how long until first win of the day is up too? Since the only way to currently check is to actually finish a game.

EDIT: nevermind

EDIT: Now I'm curious. Since it looks like you'll be sticking around, which development team are you a part of?

I recall hearing that he was part of the Mac client team in another thread a few days ago...

Nah, he apparently works internal tools at Riot.

He can't be part of the mac client team because he joined in May. Work stopped on the mac long before that.

Well I did run network utilities.... and I run around 100-120 which is normal because I'm on the East Coast of Canada... But over the last days... Whenever I join a game.,,,my ping is always past 400-900 ... and my internet speed is a TGV120 ...
Mac client is just point broken at the moment.. Hopefully, by reinstalling Leona the issues will be fixed , because at the moment, it's just point stupid to play at this game so much that I'm considering to bootcamp my mac.

I got a favorable response from the PvP.net team. This doesn't mean it'll be prioritized any time soon, but it does mean they agree that it would be useful and plan to do it when they have time to.
