Why:
To communicate better, people often shorten Champion names, so I decided to make a short, concise, intuitive list.

Reasoning:
I had a few goals in this list:
  • Intuitive - List must make sense
  • Tyranny of the Majority - A less used champion will be sacraficed first
  • Unmistakable - Even for people who are unaware the symbols should be easy to guess
  • Transparent - The reasoning should be clear

Naming Scheme:
The most often followed (and excepted) rule:
Symbol is first 2 letters of the name

The second most often followed rule:
If a name is two distinct parts, initials will be used
Ex: Xin Zhao, XZ

If a name is one word but sounds very separate, initials will be used
Ex: Heimerdinger, HM

If the most logical symbol is already taken the most popular one will be given dibs
Ex: Annie AN over Anivia

The symbol should be as unmistakable as possible
Ex: Jarvan is JV, Jax JX, and JN since JA is in common with all

Honorifics will be ignored
Ex: Dr. Mundo is MD instead of DM

That's the overall rule of thumb.
