i know playing far away from california (like Africa) can increase your ping. Usually i get 40-80 ping (Vancouver) but yesterday i went up to 300-500 latency. What causes it to spike that high? Is it the internet company (using shaw cable btw).

spikes are usually server based, although if you're downloading files P2P you can get spikes because P2P isnt always stable.

it can be your isp, it can be your computer (hardware or software malfunctions) it can be someone else using your network using up all the bandwidth (including you, stop dling pr0nz til after the game silly) it can be the game host (riot i think). There are so many things that without knowing a lot about the situation with you, your isp, hidden background programs, your network, how much porn you're downloading, and even more things it's hard to say.

The quality of your connection, bandwidth, and issues with interference can effect ping, for starters. Perhaps someone who shares your network was doing something bandwidth-consuming.

It might also be something out of your control (something to do with your isp).

Was it really a spike as you say or was it consistent?

come on dude. no one downloads porn these days. just go on hellokitty.com or iliekponies or something. the most someone would do is saved images.
Getting on topic, i restarted my comp and everything and turned everything off cept for LoL. it stayed high for the entire game where i had 2 second delays. but i think its fine now, was just curious what caused it. no one was using the internet but me. i solved the issue that night by using my laptop and stealing my neighbor's internet.

oh wow, even canada gets up to 80 ping, thought you guys would be at <30, im at 160 in NZ :P

on a side note, how i changed isp's last week, the ping dropped from abotu 180 to 190, to a constant 160, so that could also be a solution for you :P
