note ive been out of the game for roughly six months. im watching the ESL matches and see that theres basically 3 solo lanes, a jungling, and a roamer.

what does the roaming champ do? how does he maintain survivability? is he typically some kind of tanky character anyway?

Roaming became popular when people wanted a way to make Eve useful after her jungling got nerfed.

Pretty much in the last week or two. Tanky DPS meta is gone, now it's roaming. Roaming champ just.. roams. They usually get underleveled, but champs good at roaming don't need to have many items or levels to be effective.. (alistar, janna).

An ideal roamer tends to be one, such as Alistar, that relies less on gear and levels than other champions. Naturally, a roamer tends to be a few levels below everyone else due to the lack of farming they do, so they have to be fairly non gear reliant to still keep up.

so i would imagine the list of good roaming champs would be a small list. eve, alistar, janna... who else is decent? and are they still expected to be major contributors in team fights?

All I'm gonna say is that Evelynn is fun to play again. It's not even a cheesy trick this time-- someone realized something she could do, and do well.

When Dragon got buffed.

2 Bottom is no longer essential to protecting dragon, giving the opportunity for strong roamers to gank.

The best are Taric, Alistar, Blitzcrank.

Close behind are Poppy and Evelynn.

Roaming alistar just got killed by patch. Why would you roam? Roaming alistar was done cause you couldn't really jungle. Now Jungle alistar is VIABLE so you don't have to roam, you just jungle for your team.
Jungling is about speed and ganks and Alistar ganks are S-tier, superior to any other jungler i think.
And even if you get counter-jungle'd, you just roam, no other jungler can be hard countered and still help his team, none. You don't even need those buffs.
Jungle alistar is all roaming alistar was, minus the underlevel part.
