6 Tips for Defeating Ryze

First, the reason Ryze is so feared that people would write a guide on how to deal with him is that he has extremely good dps with his AoE/single target and Rune Prison. Ryze is considered OP because he has by far the best stun in the game and also has exceptional dps. Plus, the cooldowns on both aren't as high as other stunners that don't get nearly his kind of dps on the stun and who are required to close to melee in order to stun.

However, your team will almost always have a Ryze on it because of this, so the games remain fair and you don't have to play as him as someone will enjoy Ryze.

Anyway, there are some really good ways to take him out and you should know these as until he is reworked, he will remain on both sides of almost every match:

1. He does great damage from Rune Prison (stun) but his 1-2 punch is from his aoe/single target (it aoes if more targets are around bouncing between them, but will single target if he gets you alone). When fighting Ryze solo, try to position around your minions. They can take these hits for you.

2. As with any stunner, don't fight under a tower even if there is a low champ. You run the risk of being stun-locked beneath it and being easy prey.

3. In team situations, get behind him if he is going after another teammate. Often, the other teammate is already dead and just doesn't know it yet. (unless you have silence or a stun or a megaheal, etc.- if so, use those to save your teammate obviously) After he throws his skills, he is a very low dps mage with poor HP. He will burst on one player and will not "reload" for 15-30 seconds, that's when he is vulnerable.

This is HUGE. Often team members will see Ryze kill a full HP champ in 2-3 seconds and will be intimidated. They'll run away instead of seeing this as the opportunity to mess Ryze up that it is. Keep in mind that he ALSO has really low cooldowns, so if you can't kill him in 10-15 seconds (or shut down his ability to cast through killing him, silence, etc.) then get out of there - if you can. . . obviously deal more damage if you are already committed because a smart Ryze will chase once his abilities are almost back up.

4. Bait him with a tank. Unless you have your own stun or ability to quickly take him out which you should already know how to use, a good strat is to get him to take his damage out on a tank. Good tanks will know this and will rush him. Be sure to back up your tank with dps/stuns, etc.

5. Think about how your champion plays and pick gear that will allow you to win most of the time and that fits your champ's style of play.

You don't need mercury treads is you play a fast character, but tanks might find them useful as they will cut the stun length (and damage) of Rune Prison. Fast characters can simply stay out of his range. Ryze hates chasing other champs because ideally he is bursting and running back to his tower/team to let the cooldowns come back then running out and bursting again. Let him waste his time chasing you and lead him into a trap (this is especially true if you have a character that can kite him like Teemo, Ashe, or Sivir). Plus, Ryze is just one champ. Unless you are fighting a ton of stunners/slowers, the additional movement speed will serve you better. The point here is to NOT outfit your character just to defeat Ryze. Think about how your champion plays and pick gear that will allow you to win most of the time and that fits your champ's style of play.

6. Ryze should normally be #1 on the gank list in team battle situations. Extremely high burst damage and the best stun in the game are vicious. He's probably a bit OP (thus the reason you will always have one on both teams until he gets nerfed - I think Riot is letting the Ryze fans have fun for a bit because he has been reworked so many times before - sometimes to his detriment) and you want him in the graveyard. Additionally, he has low HP so he relies heavily on the fear that his huge burst damage creates in players.

The only people who have problems with Ryze are the ones who don't spend any gold on defencive items. Against ryze, your boots are merc treads( though you should be used to buying these in at least half your games anyway). After that go for your first core item, then maybe think about getting some more magic resist if Ryze is doing well. If ryze is doing poorly, merc treads may be all you need. If your team is feeding ryze like heck, you may need to get some more magic resist inbetween your first core item.

ex. You normally rush an infinities in this game, you'd grab BF sword -> magic resist cape -> infinity edge ->banshees (Or whatever, it's a rough example).

Also encourage a tank/support to pick up Aegis of the legion. If you all pick up merc treads, you have an aegis on your team, and nobody feeds ryze in the laning phase he's not that big of a deal.

Agreed. I'm always surprised how some people are very inflexible with their builds regardless of prevailing conditions. It's pretty obvious when Ryze is getting to the point where he's going to be out control. The simple choice of which boots to buy is a dealbreaker, and yet they insist on buying berserks or ninjas or even mobility. Moreso if they are the one being chewed on.

I was just in this game where nidalee was feeding the hell out of a ryze, yet all he bought were AP items and sorc shoes. It took him 6 deaths before he bought a single MR item.

I told a Nidalee to get MR items. She said

"nope my build comes first"

Awesome.

I really cant take this seriously, The grammar is terrible, Ryze does not have a stun, and the tactics are basic "Do this for any hero". On top of it, yes, stand near creeps in a lane when he can just ult and use them to aoe destroy you.... This just sounds like a joke it really does.

So Ryze is fair only when both teams have him? How is this balanced OP?

Please Riot nerf him if you care about game balance...

Banshee veil + merc treads, the end. If you seriously need more than that to counter a single hero, you've already lost the game.
