Couldn't find a comparison between the two with the search

For AD heroes, for marks + quints is it better going armor penetration or critical damage? It's 29.37 armor pen v.s 33.45% critical damage.

Even on attacks that are guaranteed to Critical, Armor Penetration will add more damage than Critical Damage % will. This has been discussed and analyzed numerous times.


Given a 100 damage attack against a target with 80 Armor (fairly average for level 18 armor) and a 20% Crit chance.
The damage formula is (Damage + Crit Chance*Crit Damage*Damage)*(1-(Armor-Armor Pen/(100-(Armor-Armor Pen))
So base is: (100+20)(1-.44) = 66.67
With Crit Damage Runes: (100+26.69)(1-.44) = 70.38
With Armor Pen Runes: (100+20)(1-.33) = 80
With 100% Crit (Ashe Passive, Shaco Deceive, Pantheon Heartstabber, etc):
Base: 200*(1-.44) = 110
Crit damage Runes: 233.45*(1-.44) = 129.68
Armor Pen Runes: 200*(1-.33) = 133.2

The only situation in which Crit Damage is better is when the target has less armor then you have armor penetration (i.e. the first few levels)

seems people dont notice items.

2x crit damage items

4x armor pen items


if you do decide to go crit damage, go all out.

reds/yellows/quints=45%

buy a last whisper if you want armor pen.

Armor pen is better, at least as long as the champion you are using does not have a crit based spell (Gangplank, Shaco, Tryndamere). For those 3 its debatable, but otherwise armor pen is better.

I would argue against most of your points.

There is technically only one flat armor penetration item, and that is the Brutalizer. Black Cleaver and Stark's Fervor are Armor Reduction, and Last Whisper is % Armor Penetration (very good against armor stackers, rather unimpressive against regular champions, and it still needs a solid amount of Flat Armor Penetration to be fully effective).
Additionally, one of the Crit Damage items is considered to be the best item a DPS champ can buy (IE, obviously).
I would argue strongly that Crit Damage in Blues and Yellows is very much not worth it. As you see, it's only an improvement of 12% over the Reds/Purples. You get a lot more bang for your buck going "primary" Seals and Glyphs like MP/5/level and CDR
