What minions do you kill in a wave so that a lane pushes itself?

Im assuming your speaking during the roaming/ganking phase, generally just clearing out a wave is enough to push a lane by itself until it reaches the closest tower or if an enemy champ farms your wave and pushes back. If you are in a hurry and need to join the team quickly just clear the highest health minions (melee and/or siege) and then leave.

No, I mean in mid game, when maybe one tower is down. All of a sudden you look over and a lane no one has been in has 30 f'ing creeps rolling down it. How did that happen?

Mid/late game is the roaming ganking phase. Mass minions occurs when your team isn't properly pushing back lanes that have their outer towers down. This snowballing effect occurs once your wave has made it into the enemy side of the map, and is cleared out by a tower, and due to their minions having to travel a short distance they end up piling up during the clashes.

If you want the lane to push itself, kill all the ranged creeps but leave the melee ones alone.

That's what I've been doing, but I wasn't sure if anyone had any other tricks that might work better, like kill all but 1 melee and 1 cannon or something.

Yeah this works because the melee ones have higher health / lower damage, and only attack the other melee ones (because the caster / cannon stay in the back). What this actually does is slow the wave down as thy take time to kill those melee guys, letting the next wave catch up. What is really cool about this is it is deceptive to the enemy team until it is too late and a wave has 6+ caster minions and is pushing it's self to their turret like a boss.

They patched down the creep wave damage to turrets though - this strategy was very powerful during the last patch cycle. Post patch, not so much. Still a very good strategy to use as it is still effective in maintaining lane control while allowing you to push 5 mid. Either they split up to regain their lanes, or the minions take turrets for you ^_~

Kill ranged, leave melee. This worked like a charm in DotA and it works here too.

Kill ranged and one melee.

Also as a general rule of thumb the team with the worse team kill score will have a slight creep advantage that will naturaly push out if left alone for a while.
