First of all, welcome to one of the best games I have ever had the privilege to be a part of. Enjoy your time playing an excellent, free game, and I hope I see you online!

The point of this thread is to serve as a jumpstart for those who have played DotA or even RTS games before. If you're looking for specific guides, head over to the New Player Forums for general advice or the Guides & Strategy forum for specific champions or ideas.

For those of you who have never played DotA or any other similar game, this thread is a great place to start with information. The tutorial in game will help, as well.

Before you even play

The importance of not leaving a game in the middle of it cannot be stressed enough. If you leave, you ruin 9 other people's experience. Also, you do not gain ip or xp, you lose some IP for your next 8 games, you get a leave AND a loss marked on your sheet, you lose Elo even if your team wins, and, finally, if you leave too many games your account will be permanently banned.

League of Legends uses a level system similar to a role-playing game. As you win (or lose), you gain experience and level up. You gain more rune slots and access to new summoner spells, as well as gaining a point to put in to the excellent Mastery system.

It also uses a currency system. It's very important to note that you cannot buy 'power' in League of Legends. RP can only be used to purchase champions faster or cool, non-stat giving skin changes. IP, which you earn by playing the game, can be used to purchase everything that could possibly affect gameplay.

When you first start, you have a single mastery point. You should head to your Summoner Profile in the upper-right hand corner, and load it.

You'll see multiple options across the top. If you are a new player, Ranked Stats will not be available. Also, Achievements have not been implemented, so that will be grayed out as well.

Go ahead and head to the Masteries tab and spend your point. I always suggest either putting it in the Defensive tree (+armor or +magic resist) or the Utility tree (-time dead, if you're worried about dying, or Haste, because Ghost is amazing).

As you level your summoner, you'll earn more points. It's a good idea for newer players to stack Defense or Utility instead of Offense - staying alive is important

As you level, you'll also earn rune slots. Currently, you don't have any runes, but they can be purchased for IP in the store. Remember, you earn IP from playing - don't be afraid to purchase a few cheap Tier 1 runes to round out your page, and then buy tier 3 runes once you hit level 20.

Differences between DotA and LoL

League of Legends has a wide variety of features that are not available in DotA. In addition to every champion being a brand new champion (aka, no clones), and every item being unique as well, there great new changes that add variety to the gameplay, such as brush, jungle buffs, and a new item shop.

Items Shop: When you open the item shop, you'll be shown a basic page, from which you browse from. By going in to the different sections, you'll find more information. Looking for a +hp, +dmg item? Either go to attack -> damage, or go to defense -> health, and you'll find it in both places!

Recommended items There is a new 'recommended items' section in the upper-right hand corner. This section is a guide to new players, in order to show them a good build for their champion. Remember that the recommended items are not always the best items for the situation - that magic resist item doesn't really do much against 5 physical dps enemies.

The first item, on the left, of the recommended items tab is your suggested starting item. It's usually a good idea to buy a health potion or two to accompany the item. Usually the item is either a Doran's item (doesn't build in to anything) or is a combo item for something that you will build in to.

Jungle Buffs: Jungle buffs replace DotA's rune system. By killing the large golem, large lizard, or Baron Nashor, you can get a buff that lasts for 2.5 minutes that assists you greatly. In addition, the Dragon provides team-wide benefits as well. At the bottom is a screenshot of the mini-map with the important creep spawns circled. Here's what they do:

G - Golem - Regenerates 1.5% mana or energy per second and gives a scaling cooldown reduction buff.

L - Lizard - Physical attacks give the target a short Damage over Time debuff and slows them as well

B - Baron Nashor - spawns at 15 minutes - gives a team-wide buff that increases your health and mana regeneration, as well as increased attack power and ability power

D - Dragon - gives a team-wide experience and gold boost.

Brush: Brush is one of the most important additions to League of Legends. The brush is a Line of Sight(LoS) blocker that is placed around the map. Hiding in the brush will prevent anyone not in the brush from seeing you. Also, you cannot see past brush, so it's a great way to set up an ambush or gank someone.

Other changes: The targeting system in League of Legends is similar to an MMORPG. You cannot de-select your champion - however, if you left click a unit, you will target them and see their stats across the top of your screen. Your buffs and debuffs are above your spell selection area.

DotA players will also notice there is no denying. If you are curious about why, you may check out Zileas' Original post about advanced mechanics. It's a bit out-dated, but outlines the discussion quite well.

Unlike DotA, Orb effects stack. Yes, you can lifesteal, slow, and armor debuff them with each individual attack, if you have the items.

Inhibitors, LoL's version of the barracks,do actually respawn. For the duration they are down, you get 1 super minion in that lane. And, if you manage to get all 3 down, you get 2x super minions in all 3 lanes.

Joining Games

League of Legends has three types of matches: Practice, Normal, and Ranked. Practice games are similar to your DotA pug - They are mostly for new players or to play against friends, but some players use them to test new builds or champions. Normal games are matchmade and semi-competitive. You gain 100% of your normal IP or XP in these games, and is generally the most played mode. Ranked matches are highly competitive, and have long-term stat tracking and ladders for them.

Good luck, and enjoy your games!

Ragequitting is unacceptable. Players have been banned from League of Legends for ragequitting too much.

This made me smile. I hope it continues to be enforced.
