@Gouretoratto: Or, he could get a chain mail and negatron cloak for even cheaper, have better defense, and let the REAL tank get the aegis.

Every team should have at least one Aegis. The faster it's obtained, the better.

the Aegis' strength is mostly in early game because of the aura buff which becomes less significant later on.

I agree, but teams nearly always have a tank, but don't always take supports. Personally, it's always my first buy on Taric. Push+Invincilane ftw!

Depends on the support and the tank. Soraka and Sona need to stay close for their auras anyway. Janna and Nidalee need to stay back to remain effective. Amumu will often stay in the middle of the enemy team, despite how his allies maneuver, while Shen will dash all around, staying near carries, etc. So if it were Soraka and Amumu, I'd say Soraka, if it were Shen and Janna, I'd say give it to Shen.

The nice thing about the tank taking it, however, is they can better use the base AR and MR most of the time. With Amumu, for example, I will often make an Aegis and GA. Buying their components early gives me plenty of AR and MR. Whereas Nidalee will basically be throwing away the extra AR/MR since she's already a master of running away, and she desperately needs AP if she's going to be at all relevant in a game. It's not a good idea for her to give up an item slot when she so desperately needs 5 of them to be dedicated to AP to have an impact.

That's a very good analysis of who should get Aegis. I'll keep that in mind for the future.

I agree with Sorbon. The Aegis is only useful if you're near your teammates, and the player who will be close to allies and can make use of the defense (nearly everyone, but tanks especially as Sorbon said) is the one who should get the aegis.

Ever since the first time I used it (not until about a month or two ago) I've built it every time I play Shen. It gives him fantastic early staying power at low cost.

Or he could get an Aegis too and get double aura boosts from Aegis.
