While looking at champion balancing statistics for League of Legends I noticed that there was something interesting going on with Elo distribution.

For curiosity sake I made a graph demonstrating Elo distribution on both EU and US regions.

Elo ladders snapshot made today: 5/22/2011.

X-axis: Maximum Elo summoner holds on any ladder of his/her region.

Y-axis: Number of summoners holding a particular Elo.

NOTE: At 1400 Elo there is a LOT of summoners.

3 peaks:

One at 1235: The average Elo of active players. It's higher than 1200 because it's effected by the 'Loss forgiven' inflation.

One at 1200: Lots of players who did only a few games so their Elo stayed around 1200 and not effected by Elo inflation.

One at 1400: The Elo of these players are effected by Elo decay, which stops at 1400.

ELO Decay is when you are above 1400 ELO when you quit or go inactive. Over time, an inactive account loses ELO until it either becomes active again, or it reaches 1400 ELO, at which the decay stops. A lot of people think that it is limited to 1400 to prevent these good players from dominating games in 'ELO Hell' if they choose to return.
