So.... I'm new to the lore. How in the world do I learn all of this? Is there a great document or article that does it in a linear fashion or am I left to just reading all the character lores at once and try to figure it out?

I know they are rebooting so there will be people here telling me to just wait or it's not worth it but I am interested.

Thankssss

You ask this question at an interesting time. There used to be a little fictional newspaper called "The Journal of Justice", but that has went dormant for over a year, before the link to it was removed a bit ago.

More recently, Riot announced they were reworking the lore. The only thing we know that is canon in the lore is the Shurima event that just happened.

Here is the link:

http://promo.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/shurima/story/index.html?ref=en_na_pvpt_endofshurima

Its not much a story, but its the only lore we have right now.

The universe is being rebooted in a sense. Feel free to read character bios, but understand that parts of their story may change.

Overall they said that most stories are currently still considered canon, just not the ones who are involved with the institute of war.

So for example ahri was still originally a fox,who consumed the life essence of humans to become more and more human until she started to feel remorse, which is why she now seeks a way to become human without killing people is still canon, just not the part where she goes to the league of legends to do that.

Since they stopped to mention the League already a long time ago,I'd say it is safe to assume that every lore who does not mention the league is still canon,so every champ who was released(or whose lore was reworked) after jayce should be rather safe from retcons(Darius and Draven probably too)

Here's what hasn't changed.

Runeterra is a world full of magic power and diverse creatures. It is divided mostly into city-states, with a few unclaimed wild territories. Years before any of this, the mages of the world went to war and started blowing eachother the hell up with powerful runic magic. This went awry quickly, and throughout the course of four of these "Rune Wars", the landscape was forever changed, and entire parts of the landscape, especially south of a mountain range called "The Great Barrier" were marked by deadly magic, and are still considered uninhabitable.

As it is now, there are 8 major City States:
Demacia, The City Of Light, who value justice and courage above all else.
Noxus, a haven for the ambitious and unscrupulous who ignore pesky "morality" to pursue personal might.
Piltover, The City Of Progress, where new technology is developed.
Zaun, a nearly lawless town that pursues knowledge at all costs (think mad scientists).
Ionia, an island nation valuing tradition, balance and peace.
Bandle City, hometown of the Yordles, small furry humanoids that are the second sentient race of Runeterra.
Bilgewater, a coastal city that is infested with pirates.
Freljord, an icy peninsula ravaged by a three-way civil war.

War is causing lots of issues in Valoran, and tension is high between rivals Demacia and Noxus, Piltover and Zaun, and the warring tribes of Freljord. To make matters worse, creatures from the mysterious Void, elemental monsters like Brand, and nightmarish creatures like Nocturne are roaming around and mucking things up. The recent rise of the once dead Shurima empire is also presenting a new prescence in Valoran. The people of Valoran must find a way to coexist, through peace or war, without incurring a 5th Rune War and destroying the continent, yet again.

EVERYTHING BELOW IS NOW NON-CANON
This was achieved by creating the League of Legends, where the world's most powerful mages, summoners, gathered champions from the various heroes and villains of Runeterra (and beyond) to fight in matches that would decide political issues, as a substitute for war. The magic employed in these matches made it possible for the fights to be non-lethal, and thus the champions could fight again and again for their chosen alliances.

Then a Dev Blog said none of that ever happened, so don't pay attention to the game's title. It doesn't mean anything anymore.

Anyways, if you are interested in reading the (old and noncanon) JoJ. You can find the info on the wiki
http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/The_Journal_of_Justice:_Volume_1,_Issue_01

On the LoL wiki you can also find the old Judgements of the champions and more info about the city states of valoran

However, as was mentioned before: Riot is reworking the lore.
