There are four types of supports, not three

1. Tank supports like Leona/Alistar/Taric/Braum who take hits for the team and bring a ton of CC
2. Mage supports like Annie/Zyra/Morg who build AP so they can set up early game ADC kills and transition into a second APC late came.
3. Utility supports like Sona/Soraka/Janna who build AP so they can protect/buff teammates better, but tend to be a little more defensive in nature as a result.
4. Thresh, who late game tanks harder then the tank supports, sets up ADC kills better then the mage supports, and has more valuable utility then the utility supports (for god's sake, his lantern fulfills the purpose and direction of JANNA'S ENTIRE KIT in one ability)

So, with that in mind, it's easier to think about the "traditional support" thing.

Tanks and Mages are the same as listed above. Traditional supports are all the supports who are NOT BULKY and released before Thresh. Thresh is both his own category (because he's OP) and a member of every other category (again, because he's OP).

Here's some supporting evidence:

Ranked Solo statistics (all ranks)
Ranked solo statistics (diamond+)
ranked teams statistics (all ranks)
ranked team statistics (diamond+)

Thresh is only consistently picked less then 50% of the time in overall solo queue stats. In every other metric he is consistently over 50% pick rate, which effectively means there's one in every game. But we knew that already.

We could try to buff every other support to Thresh's level but Thresh is on a level all his own. His utility is simply broken, and can't be fixed with numbers. There are too damn many intangibles in his kit that make him impossible to reasonably balance.

Nerf Thresh. He is extremely broken.

ikr there's literally no downside to picking that champion

I've seen "bad" Thresh players walk up, miss their Q and E and STILL win the trade from just the auto attack steroid, unbelievable

all of his abilities can do TWO MAJOR things; if we removed the shield from his lantern and the slow from his flay, he'd still be on the extremely strong side

overloaded kit is overloaded

No, Thresh is not broken. Thresh has the kit that every support should have.

But therein lies the problem: almost every traditional support in this game was made obsolete with Thresh's release. He simply has so many different tools to provide utility to his team, almost none of the other supports in this game can compare.

As their off-season project this year, Riot needs to more clearly define what makes a support, and then go back and rework all of those champions. It's not number problems, it's kit problems.

Least he can't heal!

Oh wait, he can shield.

May as well give thresh a heal as well, Riot. He will then officially have everything.

so you're telling me he IS broken because none of the other supports play up to his kit's standards.

And yet he consistently hovers below 50% win rate, and please don't say something idiotic like win rate doesn't matter because if he id getting played in every game that is MORE than enough date for his win rate to be incredibly significant from a statistical standpoint.

I'm saying every support who doesn't see play is broken, and not in the good way.

Thresh is not the problem here, is the point I was trying to make.
