That was a funny video. For fun, let's analyze the social tensions on what happened there:

Travis used the social pressure of the camera to make it difficult for either of them to say no. In fact, he calls out the fact that he's doing so when he uses the reddit line when talking to Peter/Yiliang afterwards. This has a second purpose we'll get to at the end.

You see that Yiliang, being caught offguard, tries to make a counter offensive, by taking shots by asking Travis who his competitors were so he could prompt them. In this situation, Yiliang responded to the awkward feelings Travis inflicted by counterattacking. This trend continues.

Knowing what I do about Travis, this was just Travis being mischievous and creating video fodder for us to comment on. One of the things he enjoys about reporting is putting people on the spot. Also, you can tell by where the conversation pauses, that Travis and Yiliang already had talked about who his favorite cosplayer was there.

Now, let's consider the possibilities here:

  • They were actually interested in walking around
  • One or both were actually disinterested

If the former is true, it can be extremely difficult for two people who've just met to communicate that interest, generally out of personal anxiety combined with narrow windows of opportunity. In normal interactions, people usually telegraph their interest in non verbal forms first.

If you watch, you'll see at about 6:00, Daphne gets embarrassed, laughs and starts to move backwards out of the frame. Yiliang takes more shots at Travis to try to make her feel more comfortable. Notice where the major eye contact is occuring around 6:28.

Daphne -> Doublelift -> Travis

Yiliang is trying to make her comfortable, but is more interested in messing with Travis. She realizes this pretty quickly and it drains most of the interest. Yiliang is unwilling to say yes and lose the match of wills with Travis. Eventually, Travis creates an excuse that allows Yiliang to drop his guard and say yes.

The problems created here are quite interesting:
  • Its possible that Daphne percieved Yiliang as higher status
  • Yiliang conceded to hanging out with her, rather than expressing interest
  • So much attention has been drawn to this now, its unlikely they'll be able to resolve this dissonance

Let's say the first point is true:

If Daphne perceives Yiliang as higher status, then for them to actually be able to hang out and connect, Yiliang has to actually let her know what he likes about her. This is because to connect, people need to remove the "status gap" between each other.

However, as seen by point #2, Yiliang is very concerned about preserving his perception as a "I'm better than you" - which is shown in both his annoyance at Travis interfering and his unwillingness to express interest.

Now that this has been recorded on camera, its unlikely he'd be willing to back down on those points. (The camera reinforcement that lead to them saying 'yes, let's hang' is also the same force that is likely to force them to stick to their guns on silly things they said in the interview).

--------

tl;dr - Travis is a troll; Doublelift is also a troll. They were both likely down to hang out, but Yiliang doesn't demonstrate the social tools required to fix the damage caused during the video interview.

They probably chatted briefly after the video and went on their way. Its clear the real bromance here is between Travis and Doublelift. FOREVER.

I thought liftlift was gay? Or am I confusing him with someone else? That's possible, my brain is not functional right now.

I felt awkward after watching that video, poor Doublelift, and even more so, poor Daphne for having been drawn into that troll-fest.
