THE TRIBUNAL JUSTICAR GUIDELINES
By Enterti, and the Tribunal Forum Regulars!

Greetings everyone, Enterti here with a handbook for those of us who go beyond just judging and participating in the Tribunal, and who decide to further help with the reformation process by explaining just what is going wrong in the Reform cards of the players who have ventured into this sub forum looking for advice. Here is my list of Guidelines for going that extra mile. Feel free to add your own and I will add the best of those! I would also like to see some scenarios and ways to resolve them.

KNOW THE CODE AND KEEP TO IT!

The most important thing for any Justicar is to know the Summoner's Code and to uphold it. It is the code we use when we Judge and play, and it is an excellent set of guidelines for us to keep to on the forums as well.

STAY POSITIVE ON THE FORUM! WE ARE HERE TO HELP NOT AGITATE!

Responding to the threads here can get really tiresome after a while. We all know this, but we cannot let it get to us. When we do it causes us to burn out or grow impatient with those who seek help, and at worst we end up creating a negative image of ourselves. When we get negative on the forums it ripples throughout the thread and perhaps even into threads that are not connected. Going into a thread and saying something like "glad you got banned" or "with an attitude like that its pretty obvious why you are banned" puts our worst foot forward. It immediately puts the person posting their card onto the defensive and is likely to make them resistant to any advice we try to give, and at worst we end up creating a negative image of ourselves.

Example: "Sorry to hear about your ban, if you would post your reform card we would be more than happy to look over it and give you some help"

TRY TO UNDERSTAND THE MINDSET OF THE OP.

Imagine how you would feel if you received a ban, or even a warning. Shock, anger, fear, embarrassment, and confusion are all things that immediately come to my mind when I think of that question. So even if a thread opens with an extremely toxic post, stay positive so as not to perpetuate the toxicity and perhaps calm the opening poster down.

KEEP THINGS CONSTRUCTIVE! HONEY WORKS BETTER THAN A STICK.

It is really tempting to go into a thread, see an extremely toxic poster, and proceed to call them on it or even attack them. Please don't though. It just reinforces the concept they have that everyone who plays this game is a jerk, which is flat out untrue. A lot of us are some of the most positive members in the community, we need to act that way in the forums as much as we do in the game.

Example: OP:"-obviously punishable reform card-"
Response: "Well you seem to start cussing out your team when things do not go your way. I would recommend finding an alternative method of channeling that anger outside of the game. "

CHOOSE APPROPRIATE POSTS TO RESPOND TO.

We have to be aware of players who are genuinely seeking help, versus those who just want to vent. All we do by acknowledging off topic posts is derail conversations and give attention to the people who are posting them, thus causing them to derail the conversation further. Simply tell them to open a new thread for their conversation instead, but remember only one person needs to do so. Sometimes there will be people who stand by their actions no matter what. We can point out all the logic in the world and they will still keep to their own worldview. When these pop up just leave the thread, don't try to fight them or continue to try and convince them. Just downvote and leave their thread to die. Any further posts are just keeping their thread alive and in our memory.

Example: OP:"-wall of hate and spam-"
Response: "-silence-"

I think this part is excellently stated. I've always thought that going into a thread like that inflames the situation, even if it is objectively accurate. I postulate that toxic players internalize their "role" of toxicity if they are consistently treated as the worst of the worst. If we simply treat them as other human beings that have made mistakes (Don't berate teammates for their mistakes, facilitate constructive criticism and feedback anyone? Edit: Retaliation is not okay, as well) then they would more likely to make an effort to listen to what we have to say.

Obviously, some people simply don't get it, and no amount of polite interactions can help them, but I agree wholeheartedly that starting off "Its obvious why you were banned with that attitude" is not the right way to do things.

A couple of your links aren't working for me. I've bolded the ones that don't. My guess is that because the urls being supplied aren't the full ones. If you look at your edittable post, you'll see the ones that work don't have "...." in between the url and /url.

I approve of this guide, but what Kitty said is correct since the links are not fully copied over.

Hey, I just wanted to add one thing. Since Riot has now implemented the behaviour alerts thing, it might be good to add this tid bit in there so people can have a reference to it as we're now getting lots of people posting here about them. It's just from the patch notes but it sums it up pretty well.

Quote:
Riot Pwyff:
Player Behavior
Behavior Alerts

The PVP.net client will display new warning alerts for players with spikes of negative activity, in order to help course-correct them as soon as possible with quick and direct feedback.
•Players with recently detected unsportsmanlike behavior will see a warning after the End of Game screen.
•Alerts will not follow every player report; alerts are targeted toward players that exhibit uncharacteristic spikes of highly negative behavior.

Some IRL stuff has kept me away from a lot of projects unfortunately, and whenever I had popped in here it seemed like you guys had everything running pretty tight. I should be back and posting more though
