I'm new.

Ok so I'm guessing burst damage is when your champion does some sort of super critical hit on the enemy champion or something along those lines.

Burst damage is like 4k damage in 1 second but then wait for 20 seconds for cooldowns.

"TONS OF DAMAGE" in a short period of time, on the order of a few seconds. Contrast this with sustained damage, which includes moderate to low cooldowns on abilities that don't combo as well as those of a burst caster.

Examples of burst casters: Ahri, Poppy, Brand
Examples of sustained damage casters: Karma, Cassiopeia

Oooh so it's like a champions special attack thing where they take down a **** load of hp in a hit or two. Now that I connect this to the other times I've seen it it all makes sense! ty!

I guess the burst in burst damage explains the whole thing itself then...

burst damage is how much damage you can do in fairly little time, as in a second or two, generally from a single round of spells.

Burst damage is a lot of damage all at once, whereas sustained damage is less damage at once, but continuous damage over an extended period of time.

Burst champions are considered Leblanc/Veigar/Zed etc. TBH I see burst champions win quite often I just never see them picked.

Burst damage is like when you're sliding into first and you feel something burst, burst damage.
Or when you're climbing up a ladder and you feel something splatter, burst damage.

As people have said, burst damage is damage dealt in very shot (1-3 second) span. Some champions have abilities that allow them to do massive damage very quickly (LeBlanc, for example), but then have to wait for cooldowns to come off to deal notable damage again.

This is compared against sustained damage, where the champions do solid damage continuously, often allowing them to do more damage total than someone specializing in burst damage... as long as they have the time.
