"Zubat may be seen around Mt. Mortar!"

"So many it will seem like a dream!”

“Pokémon! Pokémon! Pokémon Cha-” *click*

“Herm… I don’t know why my son even bothered buying me this lump of junk…” The old man grumbled, chewing softly on his rice. “All they have on the radio is silly and frivolous. I’d rather listen to the music they play at the dance theater any day.

You’re seated on the table across from the old man. Sleep came uneasily. Stranges voices calling out to you flooded your dreams kept you awake for much of the night. In addition, you seem to have a bit of a headache...

There are also many questions that have left to be answered. Where am I? What are Pokemon? Have there been any other incidents? Where can I find new clothes? There is much you do not know, but you are determined to find out.

Your first question. “Where am I?”

The old man turns nodding. He strokes his hand through his beard. “Ah, an excellent question far traveler. You are in the region of Johto, and more importantly, the town of Ecruteak. This town has more than it’s fair share of tales and legends. We are traditionalists here and proud of it!

“To the south, there is Goldenrod City. It is the largest city in Johto, and houses a variety of different attractions, such as the Radio Tower and the Goldenrod Department store. Goldenrod’s Magnet Train can also take you to Kanto in a flash, if you ever get the need to visit Saffron City. With a single turn, Violet City can be found just to the southeast. They have the region’s trainer school.

“To the west is the port city of Olivine. It’s the main port city, and one of two ways besides the Magnet Train a man can get to Kanto. Every so often, ship will leave from the port and take you to Vermillion, the port city of Kanto. If you have a Pokemon large enough to take you across water, you can also reach Cianwood and the Whirl Islands.

“Finally, to the east we have Mt. Mortar. It’s a natural maze inside. Not many people dare to stay inside the cave for fear of getting lost. Still, if you can find your way through, you’ll reach Mahogany Town. There isn’t anything too exciting there, except for the Lake of Rage. You can find that by going north from Mahogany. Keep going east, and you’ll reach the Ice Path. Get through that, and you’ll end up in Blackthorn City. Anything else you want to ask?”

“Yes… What is a Pokémon?” You ask. The old man shoots you an incredulous look, then bursts out laughing.

“Ohohohoho! That is a good one…” The sage rises and walks over to the bookshelf, drawing his fingers across the many volumes. “The answer is both simple and complicated. Pokemon are many things at once… It just matters on perspective. Ah, here it is!” Finding his, he snatches it and places it on the table. It looks like a children’s book, but on the cover you spy a plethora of different creatures. The book is an encyclopedia. The old man sits forward in his chair in excitement. “I hope you are ready for this one my dear. Their story takes some time to explain.”

“We know not when or why Pokémon were created, but we suspect that this world was created by a higher being. Some even suppose that it was a Pokémon that initiated the process. They are creatures that have powers and abilities that are beyond our capabilities as human beings. A Pokémon can be found almost anywhere there is nature in this world. In fact, they are remarkably skilled at adapting to their surroundings.

“Cave Pokémon are often rocky or well-adjusted to darkness. The Pokémon of the oceans and streams are well adjusted to their environment as well, for their ability to swim is unmatched. It is said that these Pokémon have “types” because of that. For instance, a Pokémon with an affinity for Fire will be doused by a Water-Type Pokémon. In turn, a Grass Type will have ease in defeating a Water-Type Pokémon, but cannot stand Fire-Types.

“However, because their great power, there has often been the need to constrain their power. The earliest human beings would offer tribute to Pokémon to ask them to avoid damaging their homes and crops. Sometimes, these conflicts would end in violence between the two parties. Eventually however, humans and Pokémon began to form deeper relationships that go beyond simply surviving day to day.

“They bonded together in the mutual task of protecting and helping one another. While Pokémon are powerful, we are crafty. Even the weakest of Pokémon can grow to defeat the mightiest of foes with the help of a man. Overtime, these men would be called Pokémon Trainers. A Trainer is entrusted with the ideal of bonding with Pokémon in order to that both of them may reach their full potential. This is a proud tradition that continues to this day, even as time marches onwards.”

Mortimer grew silent for a moment in reminiscence, stroking his beard. “This does not mean that the tradition has been unchanging though… While in the early days, one had to convince a Pokémon to join you, we have developed methods of capturing and containing Pokemon.” He dips into his robe, pulling out a red and white sphere. Up close, you now notice a button the front of the ball. Looking closely, you see the shadowy form of something lurking inside through the red dome.

The old man continues his lecture. “There are really two types of Pokémon in this world… Wild and Pokémon owned by a trainer. Any wild Pokémon can be captured, but you must first weaken in a bout of skill between you and your Pokémon versus the Pokémon. Once you have worn out your foe enough, you can catch it *this*.” He say, pointing at the red sphere in his hand. It is shaking slightly.

“This is called a Poké Ball. Inside this ball is a Pokémon. The technology of the ball enables us to shrink a Pokémon to a smaller size and contain them. Most Pokémon do not mind this. It is comfortable enough inside of the ball. Some smaller Pokémon seem to mind it a bit more and prefer to stay outside of their ball. For instance, I have not once managed to get Amoline to stay in her Poké Ball for any extended period of time. She is what you call a free spirit!”

“Drea!” There is a brief splash light, as Amoline bursts from the Poké Ball. She makes a beeline to you, biting down on your hair playfully, before floating into cabinet beneath the bookshelves. The old man grins, struggling to keep his composure.

“I believe she has taken a liking to you my dear! Amoline is a Ghost-Type Pokemon. They are an ethereal and mystic Type. Physical attacks pass right through them! Now where was I…? Ah yes!”

“Not all Pokémon like to stay inside of a Poké Ball. In fact, many will fight tooth and nail to prevent that from happening. But when you do finally capture it, it will serve you to the best of its abilities. For the most part anyways… If a Pokémon is too powerful for your skills, it may reject you as a trainer. Before you can battle as a team, you must prove your worth to it. You cannot expect every Pokémon you catch to like you. Trust and respect for one another is something that must be earned.”

“Now… Depending on whom you ask, Pokémon can mean many different things to different people. They have been both friends and enemies; partners and slaves. Sometimes, we have worshipped and praised them. Other Pokémon have caused us to live in fear of their great and terrible power. There are Pokémon in this world that can shake the very foundations of the earth itself and can wipe out entire civilizations with its power. Should those Pokémon fall into the fall into the wrong hands… No one likes to think about it.

“For that reason alone, the strongest trainers of each region will often band together as one to protect themselves from the forces of darkness. Together, they formed the Pokémon League, an institution designed to protect the world from the forces of evil. Beneath them, there are Gym Leaders that are assigned the task of protecting the region on smaller scale. Localized issues fall upon them.

“Nowadays, their functions have changed slightly. Evil is not as prevalent as it once was in the days of old, so Gym Leaders and the Pokémon League busy themselves with the task of creating the strongest trainers possible by challenging them to defeat them. Their challenge is simple: Collect eight badges from eight different Gym Leaders, and you will be allowed to face the Elite Four. Upon defeating them, you can face the Champion.”

Mortimer breathes a sigh of relief and pushes the book towards you. “This is an encyclopedia of Pokémon. Before fancy technology, this is how we kept track of the many different types of Pokémon in the world. Seeing as I can’t read anymore, I would like you to have it. You’ll need it as you venture off into the world… Also… herm…” The old man stops in deep thought, stroking his beard. “Amoline!”

The Misdreavus responds floating towards her master. She grabs a stray band of beard hair, nibbling on it gently and screeching happily. Mortimer allows himself a small, but sad smile. “As I understand it… You don’t actually have a Pokémon of your own Alaka. If you would like it, I want you to have her.”

He rises up from the table, folding his hand behind his back. Amoline follows closely, with a surprised expression. “I’m getting rather old now… My time left on this earth is short. She’s still young. Would you take her from me? Give her experiences that this old pile of bones could never provide! What do you say?”

Will you allow Amoline to become your starter?

A. Yes
B. No

((I apologize for the wall of text! There was quite a bit more to be explained then I thought there would be.

Just as a sidenote, I’ve interpreted D as a stay in Ecruteak answer. We’ll remain there to tie up any loose ends, such as obtaining clothing and getting information about both of the figures, as well as finding out about any other incidents. Once more information is gathered and all loose ends tied up, I’ll ask which direction you guys want to go.))

A. Of course, she's pretty cute; the whole 'ethereal and mystic' part also sounds very fitting for some reason.

“I would be honored.” You say, bowing with as much dignity as you can muster in a hospital gown.

“DREAAAA!” Amoline begins floats in a wide circles around you, before diving in to grab a clump of your hair with her teeth. She squeals in delight. You reach out and stroke it in return, causing her to giggle. You are now the proud trainer of Amoline, the Misdreavus!

Mortimer smiles and tosses her Poké Ball to you. “If you should ever run into to trouble and Amoline becomes injured, be sure to have her return to that ball until you can get her to a Pokémon Center. They will be kind enough to tend to her injuries. Now!” The sage straightens himself up, folding his hands across his back.

“When you get the chance, look up in that book of yours to see what Amoline can do. It has detailed information on nearly every creature in the region if you just take the time to look inside through its pages.” He closes his eyes, reflecting for a brief moment.

“I’ve taught you as much as I am able in the short time we have been together. It’s up to you to decide what roads down which you travel now. But remember this: You are never alone. So long as you stay on the righteous path, there will always be someone to help you.”

The sage turns from you, facing the window. The light of the morning sun is just beginning to peek through the panes. “I wish you good luck my dear. Your journey will be long and dangerous, but in the end fruitful. I hope you find your way back to where you belong.” The outline of the sage begins to shimmer and shake.

His voice begins distort, echoing in the air around you. “The two men you seek. One went to Mt. Mortar to seek what he had lost. The other went to Violet City, to learn more about this world. There are others like you my dear beyond these two. You would be wise to seek them out, but only when you believe you are ready. Beyond these two men, know that there are others like you scattered about the world.”

His form flashes for a brief moment, revealing the dark silhouette of a foreign creature where the sage once stood. The apparition begins to fade away, drifting off into nothingness. He is gone. Amoline cries out surprise, looking about the room.

It is in that the door beside to the little house opens. A pair of old women stand in the frame of the door. They cackle in surprise, brandishing Poké Balls at you. “We’ve found her!” They both release their Pokémon in turn, the first releasing a gaseous creature, the other the other releasing a floating shade with hands. “Gastly, Haunter! Use Hypnosis!” Their eyes glow a cyan blue. Amoline floats beside you, her eyes struggling to remain open. You fair little better. After a moment’s struggle, you fall asleep.

“You didn’t have to come here. I’m perfectly capable of handling this on my own.”

“As if! I don’t think even you know what we’re dealing with here. Besides, there’s been nothing interesting has happened ever since Team Rocket disbanded.”

“Our job isn’t about having fun Whitney. It’s our duty to keep people safe. This woman is dangerous… She may not be a Pokemon like Bill thought she was, but I sense some kind of power within her the likes of which I’ve never seen. Her aura is foreign to me… I’ve never felt a thing like it in my life.”

“Well yeah… I realize that. However, if something is going on here Ecruteak, there’s no telling whether this will spill over into Goldenrod, or anywhere else for that matter! I’m staying to keep myself informed.”

“…Alright, fine. Stay if you want to. She’s waking up.”

You awake with a groan, surrounded by nearly complete darkness. Candle sticks illuminate the shadowed figures of two people, a woman and a man. “Don’t make any sudden moves.” Says the man’s voice. Behind him, you see the dark shadow of a shade with red eyes staring at you. Its white teeth are also visible, caught in a perpetual smile.

Anger rises up in your heart, but you suppress the emotion. “Who are you?” You hiss.

They step forward, their faces no longer obscured by darkness. The man is blonde, wearing a black sleeved shirt with a purple scarf around his neck. It bears an emblem that you do not recognize. He is in stark contrast to the other, a pink haired girl in her pink and white shirt. They both have stern faces, scrutinizing your every move.

“We’ll be asking the questions here Miss Alaka Zam! If that is your real name” shrieks the woman. The man shoots her an angry look and pushes her behind him.

“We are both Gym Leaders. My name is Morty, leader of the Ecruteak City and a specialist in Ghost-Types. Her name is Whitney. She is the Gym Leader at the Goldenrod City Gym and specializes in Normal-Types. We are here to find out what you are. Why did you attack Bill?”

“Self-Defense. He assaulted me, so I retaliated in kind. The matter is as simple as that.” You hiss. As you rise, you pat yourself down and find feel for Amoline. “Now leave me in peace.” You find her Poké Ball in your pocket and release her. With a screech, she emerges, circling about your head. Her face mirrors yours.

“Don’t bother trying to battle us.” Whitney chides, holding her own Poké Ball in her hand. “You’ll only embarrass yourself. We are Gym Leaders, some of the best trainers in this region. You don’t stand a chance at defeating both of us!”

“Watch me. Amoline, attack!” Amoline dives forward, floating menacingly in the air.

“DREAAAAA!”

“Drea?” Amoline turns shooting you a concerned look. Whitney busts out in laughter.

“Hah! Really? That’s it?” You don’t even know how to command a Pokemon do you?” Whitney tosses her Poké Ball, releasing a small pink creature, with spikey wings poking out of its back. “Clefairy, use Double slap!”

The Clefairy lunges skyward, swiping its hands right through Amoline. Amoline giggles excitedly and laughs, which only serves to inflame Whitney’s rage. “That’s I’m ending this!” She produces a second Poké Ball, but Morty catches her hand.

“Stop. Both of you call back your Pokémon.”

“WHAT!?” Whitney screams an incredulous look on her face.

“Just do it.”

“Fine! Clefairy return!” Whitney pouts, throwing her Poké Ball. It collides with the small fairy creature, and returns to Whitney.

“Come back Amoline!” She returns to you floating about you and drifting in and out of shadows. Morty’s eyes are fixed upon her.

“Where did you get that Pokémon Alaka…?” He says, stepping towards you. The shade behind him mimics his movements, its smile not as wide as it was before. “It belongs to my family.”

“I received it as a gift from a man named Mortimer.” You say, narrowing your gaze.

Morty inhales sharply with surprise. “Mortimer… My grandfather is dead. You must be mistaken.” He places his hand upon his chin, going into deep thought. “How…”

“Morty!” A voice cries from behind them. An elderly lady bursts out of the shadows. Her face is flushed and panicked and breathing heavily. “You need to hear this sir!”

He doesn’t hesitate. Grabbing Whitney by the arm, he walks unflinchingly into the shadows, beckoning for you to follow. After a few moments of groping about in the darkness, you reach a wooden platform. On a small side table set in the side of the room, there is a small radio. The old woman walks over and switches it on. You all listen in silence to the news…

“This is Breaking News, right from Violet City. The Violet City Gym Leader, Falkner is in grave condition after being attacked by a challenger during a Pokémon. Witnesses say that after Falkner’s last Pokémon fainted, his challenger turned his Pokémon onto Falkner, using it to attack the now defenseless Gym Leader. More on this story as it develops.

Whitney covers her mouth, shaking violently. “Oh God… What happened to him! I’ve got to go see him!”

“Go. I’ll keep an eye on things here. Take care of him Whitney.” Morty says. Whitney gives the Gym-Leader of Ecruteak a quick hug before rushing out the door, a Poké Ball in her hands. He turns to you, looking you straight in the eyes with a cold gaze. “As for you… You are free to go. I don’t know who are, or why you are here, but you aren’t the one behind this incident. I need time to think. Grace, see that this woman gets a new set of clothes. She can’t go out wearing that hospital gown everywhere.”

With that, he turns and walks back into the darkness, his shadow following him. The old woman, Grace tugs at your arm.

“The Dance Theater here in Ecruteak was willing to lend you one of their older kimonos.” She leads you off into a side room, where you change. The kimono’s bright red colors are faded, but it works much better for you than the hospital gown. After changing, the old woman approaches you. “If Master Morty requires nothing else of you, here are your things… You may leave whenever you like.” After saying thus, she disappears into the shadows.

Outside, the sun is shining brightly in contrast to the events that have occurred inside of the Gym. Returning Amoline to her Poké Ball, you begin to consider what actions you should take next…

What shall you do?

I concur. We need to find some nice open space outside to gather our thoughts, and check the Encyclopedia - with it, I think it would be possible to determine Amoline's abilities and power.

A good idea. If we're lucky, something good might happen...
