The problem I have with this is for those of us who occasionally get lag spikes and either get a black screen during champion select or get the disconnect triangle, or are unable to select a champion for some reason that is not their fault, then they are getting severely punished. I know that this is a very common problem and it will directly impact all of their abilities to play the game in general. Even more importantly it will prevent them from playing ranked. If I am in a qualifying match and I've won two out of five and I get some random disconnect that prevents me from selecting a champion I will be kicked out of my promotion series.

I do support that there needs to be a change to the current way randoming works, but I feel that a much better solution would be that if they do have some sort of connection issue to where they are unable to select a champion and they random, then the game should automatically end, but it should not count as a dodge as they had no personal control over whether or not they picked a champion.

This means that if someone is in the bottom of a draft and they don't think they're going to win -but do NOT have connection problems- then this is a good solution.

TLDR:
-This is viable for those who are randoming to troll or to intentionally dodge, but it will dramatically hamper people, who have the occasional lag spike, and are unable to select their champion for connection reasons, especially as this will count as a dodge and automatically end their promotion series.

As i see it, the best way to test this is get a small group together when you are about to log off then join a queue and not select a champ for it. All queues are needing tested, don't forget - so join the most obscure one you can think of.

ALso, question:

@Riot: Are you expecting ARAM queues to be on PBE before this goes live so it can be tested prior to release?

hello folks,

today we've enabled a feature on the pbe that removes the "hard random" behavior in champ select and prevents match-made games from starting when a player fails to select a champion.

Here's how the new system works:
  • when any player in a match-made game fails to select a champion before their timer expires, the game is terminated.
  • a player who fails to select a champion is given a queue dodge penalty. The dodge penalty functions exactly the same as if the player closed their pvp.net client.
  • solo players who succeed in selecting a champion are returned to the front of the matchmaking queue.
  • arranged teams whose members all succeed in selecting a champion are returned to the front of the matchmaking queue.
  • arranged teams with one or more members who fail to select a champion are returned to the arranged team lobby.
  • draft mode is handled on a pick-by-pick basis. If a player fails to pick a champion during their turn, the game is terminated immediately. Players later in the draft order, who did not have an opportunity to pick a champion, are given the benefit of the doubt and not assigned a dodge penalty.

we know a lot of players have been asking for these changes for a while, and we're hoping to get them to the live servers asap, so test them out and let us know if you find any bugs. Also note these changes only apply for match-made games. Custom games are not yet supported and will still apply a "hard random".

Finally, i'd like to call out several rioters who were determined to deliver this feature and volunteered their time and effort during a recent riot thunderdome (game jam) event to make it happen:

Riottantram
riot damiya
new scott

and the lord shall set you free!

Now you just need to make it so when a captain fails to ban a champ it does the same thing, there is no reason to not use a ban even if they just ban someone on a whim because they want a chance at the "OP" champs

I disagree.

The initial dodge penalty isn't that severe - five minutes? Minute and a half? Not much. You can go make yourself a sandwich and come back and re-queue without a problem. It's only a severe penalty if you're already dodging frequently, or if you're having constant connection problems. If you're having recurring connection problems that result in you formerly randoming in champ select, then you're having a recurring negative impact on the people you play with - and while that may not be exactly your fault, it certainly isn't the fault of the other players on your team either.

The same reasoning applies to this that applies to dodge/afk/leaver penalties in general - if you're having connection problems to result in that frequently enough that it causes a severe dodge/leaver time penalty, then you're also frequently causing a negative game experience for the others you play with, and that should be resolved in one way or another - if you can't work out the internet issues that cause that, and it's happening that often, then you shouldn't be playing with people who queued up expecting everyone to have decent internet. Especially not ranked play.
