Ahri is in kind of a weird place right now. She was iconic in terms of season 2 champs based on her kit and the theme of that season, but when S3 came around, she was indirectly nerfed with all the item tweaks. Unfortunately for her, she had been nerfed prior to that to make her better balanced for that season which compounds her problems.

This isn’t to say Ahri is the only AP mid in trouble this season, most others not named Katrina or Evelynn are in a similar situation as our Foxy Lady, but they haven’t been hit as hard with the changes.


Mana, Damage, and Survivability
Before we even get into the details of her kit, it seems like her biggest problem is lack of focus and poor synergy with the numbers. Think about it. She doesn’t have the mana base or regen to continually harass with her spells. She doesn’t have the base damage or the ratios to burst someone down. Then making things worse, she’s very squishy and her only survivability comes from her Ult which is on a 90 second (at best) cooldown. So she's being asked to do a lot of things, with none of the tools for any.

Here’s a breakdown of what Ahri needs to be competitive in a game:
Blue buff (a must against competent opponents)
-therefore you have to hope your jungler and the enemy’s didn’t take both blues
A ton of mobility (to escape when her ult is down)
-boots of swiftness and lich bane
Max CDR (to get her Ult up as often as possible)
-boots of lucidiy and a few CDR items that just got nerfed
A rushed Rabadons (because of her bad ratios)
Tenacity items to help her survive CC
-Merc’s treads
Tons of MR penetration (bad ratios)
-sorcerer’s shoes, Laindry’s, and a void staff… yes I know her build requires her to have 4 sets of shoes but do you know any woman that doesn’t have a ton of the things?
Rylai’s for health, CC, and making Laindry’s semi-viable on her
A rushed DFG to help with her bad ratios
Tons of mana regen items (to help with her mana costs and all that CDR you bought)
-athene’s, elyssia’s, shyrulia’s, archangels, 5 golden doran’s rings, etc.
Will of the ancients to help with survivability, maybe a gunblade too
Some health, health regen, AR, and MR items to survive a little longer
10 of every gold generating item in the game (cause all that stuff is expensive)
A few pack mules (to carry everything for you)
And a friendly inlane Soraka mid (0ks 0cs), in lieu of a jungler of course, constantly infusing you (to help with mana)


Once you got all of those, you might be able to compete in S3 as Ahri. And then you see someone with good base damage stacking warmogs and one MR item and you are screwed anyways. Even without warmog stacking enemies, there have been games where it seems like I used up all my mana on a single enemy champ and he’s still standing. Her kit pushes her item requirements a lot of ways and usually people default to glass cannon since doing damage is her only consistent strength.

Now we need to look at her kit. One thing is that all her spells have bad ratios; they were nerfed in season 2 to bring her in line. Another thing to note is she has 2 skill shots and 2 luck shots.


Essence Theft (passive)
A nice idea, but because it takes 9 charges to build up, it’s of limited use. Compounding its problems is her Q uses AoE spell vamp and her E doesn’t do that much damage. Further compounding its problems is it always seems to be the case that you have full health when it’s up meaning you have to wait to use an ability or you have to waste it.

Orb
I like it, but it needs too much mana and you need it for both wave clearing and hitting the enemy champs. It’s also a very S2 in mind spell. The outgoing doesn’t do any max health damage like we need in S3 and true damage is nice but armor isn’t being built as much anymore. A lot of mids don’t built it unless the champ calls for it or they’ve gotten behind (rare against Ahri in S3).

Fox Fire
Not bad in theory, but it does have the luck shot problem… you never know who or what it is going to hit. In team fights this makes it a gamble because all 3 might hit the tank instead of the ADC. You can cast it on the run so with Rylai’s you have a little more survivability. Okay damage for the mana cost.

Charm
Her other skill shot. Okay damage but everything intercepts it and it triggers rylai’s… a double edged sword as it slows the other guy down, but it pulls him in less.

Spirit Rush
The other luck shot. This one also requires a big decision from the player… do you blow it on escape, do you blow it on positioning, or do you use it to do damage to up to 3 random targets. Just remember, when it’s down, you’re dead; you can’t do or take the damage to go all in or get caught with your pants down.


So what does she need?
She really needs Riot to make a tough decision about her. This is the elephant in the room since she’s one of the most loved/hated champs there is. Anything they do to her positively or negatively is going to cause a lot of QQing and rage on the forums. Buff her to kat/eve levels? Rage. Nerf her to karma levels? Rage. Turn her charm into a teemo-style shroom? Rage to no end.

So where do we go with her? She’s got no mana, too low damage, and little survivability. IF they decide to fix her, how? Do they fix her for S3, make her a S4 champ instead, buff her to eve/kat levels and let people ban her, make her more good generally so that she’s okay in every season but good in none of them, or do they completely rework her kit?


Here’s an idea of the things that have to be decided on
1. They can revert nerfs, in part or in full and hope that does it for her.
2. Fix her mana to damage ratios by doing any of the following:
-buff base damage
-buff her Q’s outgoing to do bonus damage on %current or %max health
-buff ratios
-lower mana costs
-buff base mana
-buff mana regen
3. Improve her survivability:
-change her passive so that it doesn’t need charges
-boost her base health
-boost her health regen
-boost her base speed
-boost her AR and MR
-lower the CD on her ult
-make her ult more about mobility than damage (mobility only perhaps)
-make her ult one jump but have a cool down of 25/20/15 seconds… ie make it like kat’s shenpo only a little better so it’s ult worthy
4. Rework her kit from the ground up
-rework it how and towards what end?
-give charm better CC aspects?
-make her passive work like Fiora’s but on spell cast?
-make the orb one way but do better damage?
-have champion kills and assists lower the CD on the ult
-turn spirit rush into AoE damage that is centered on where you were and where you are going to?
-turn fox fire into an on click?
-make fox fire and spirit rush skill shots?
-let her tentacle rape other female champs with those tails?
-give her skills passive effects (like charm buffing your mana regen when it is up or her ult giving her base spell vamp)?

As you can see, her problem isn’t that she needs to be fixed, since it is pretty clear that she does. Her problem is there are a lot of ways that she can be fixed. She’s neither here nor there which is her big problem aside from a bad blue buff dependency.

Honestly with the power creep, and characters like ryze, they should just revert her nerfs one at a time.

To take away things like her orb going out and returning takes away part of her unique and skill-based gameplay, so i'd say no to changes to that OR to the basic mechanics of her ult. However, the rest of these ideas seem pretty darn good to me. Well-played good sir.
