Think about it, MOBA

Multiplayer

Online

Battle

Arena

What games does this describe?

Well we have LoL, DotA and HoN. All obviously similar enough to be considered part of the same genre, for far MOBA holds up. But hold on wouldn't FPS games with online capabilities MOBA's?

Let's test this hypothesis.

Call of Duty, the most popular FPS on the market (not the best, before people shoot me)

Multiplayer? Yes

Online? Yes

Battle? Yes

Arena? Yes

So first person shooters are now MOBA's. But hold on, most FPS games have local split screen. That means that unless a first person shooter has DRM which forces you to always be connected to the internet to play that it stops being a MOBA, and just becomes and MBA when playing split screen and start being a MOBA again when playing online.

Going further on this, if you played Aeon of strife (the first "MOBA") offline then it also stops being a MOBA. As you can see the term "MOBA" can be picked apart very easily. But you may say "Well you are just being picky, the term itself describes the genre pretty well" well I can go further without being picky.

Warcraft 3 and Starcraft

Multiplayer? Yes

Online? Yes

Battle? Yes

Arena? Yes

So not only is Call of Duty a MOBA, but so are RTS games. This is made weirder by the fact that RTS games are the ones which the first "MOBA" maps were made from as custom maps.

This last point is just for fun but think of this. Facebook.

Multiplayer? Yes

Online? Yes

Battle? Oh yes

Arena? If you take the word arena figuratively rather than literally, yes.

The term MOBA needs to change. It will be bad going forwards as a cultural icon if we are constantly confused with other games due to how vague our genre title is. Personally my favorite replacement for the term MOBA is ARTS (action real time strategy). There is still room for confusion but not as much as with MOBA.

TL: DR- The term MOBA is inherently flawed and we need a new, more concise term that better describes our genre to replace it.

These work to, but they can cause an issue down the line with marketing if you call it either of these as it may cause the first thing people think of when they here "genre title here" to be DotA instead of whichever game people are talking about.

Why not just call the game by name and say "f*ck it" to genres?

That's what I do to music.

Most people disregard that title to begin with, this isn't a revelation.

The genre title isn't for us, it is for the every man that doesn't play these games. The title of a genre is suppose to help you explain what you are talking about, not cause further confusion.

In LoL I technically play as the summoner controlling the champion, seeing from their eyes....

...MF shoots bullets.

LoL is now an FPS.

I can be pedantic and over-generalise too

Also, the actual genre is Action RTS (ARTS), MOBA is just a 'sub-genre' of sorts.
