Gold is too soft to be of any use, a bridge made of gold would collapse under its own weight. Gold is also inert, making it hard to react with other chemicals.

Why is gold still so expensive?

Gold has been a valuable and highly sought-after precious metal for coinage, jewelry, and other arts since long before the beginning of recorded history. Gold standards have been the most common basis for monetary policies throughout human history[citation needed], being widely supplanted by fiat currency starting in the 1930s. The last gold certificate and gold coin currencies were issued in the U.S. in 1932. In Europe, most countries left the gold standard with the start of World War I in 1914 and, with huge war debts, failed to return to gold as a medium of exchange.

Scarcity is the main reason. Value is often dictated by the amount of something available, especially if it is theoretically finite.

You see, it's shiny, but not too shiny.
It catches the eye without being gaudy like brass, so as to be enjoyed by idiots.

It looks pretty, doesn't rust, doesn't tarnish, and is somewhat hard to obtain.

As far as uses, it conducts electricity like a boss, and can be made into incredibly fine materials without breaking.

Gold is also the third-most conductive element (after silver and copper), and its inert nature makes it an excellent material for electrical contacts, because it does not tarnish easily. Materials are useful for more than simply their mechanical properties. Of course, the main reasons for the value of gold are its appearance, reactivity, and rarity.

SO VERY SHINY~!

It's also unique in that as a element it has it's own special colour (A property only shared with Copper and Silver), and is not often a byproduct of nuclear fusion due to it's density, leading to it's rarity.

Its pretty! Plus, its a lot of fun to throw your hand in the air and scream

"GOLD! I HAVE LOTS AND LOTS OF GOOOALD! EUREKA!"

So yeah. The world would be a simpler nicer place if I was right about everything
