once matchmaking is done, the system predicts who will win based on average team elos. if one team is heavily favored to win and they win, they win a small amount of elo. however if they lose, they lose a ton of elo because they were supposed to win that game.

there is also a confidence value. at the beginning of a season the system isnt sure how good you are, so you win/lose a lot of elo as it tries to make you skip brackets and put you where you belong. after some games it has a better idea how good you are so elo changes are less drastic.

one thing to remember is winloss ratio doesnt matter. all that matters is who you beat and who you lose to.

It's because it was a SOFT reset, not a hard reset. A hard reset puts everyone at 1200. This is unfair, as it means the plat and diamond players everyone knows as being awesome are matched against bronze players that have no idea what they're doing.

A soft reset moves you closer to 1200, which means you were at roughly 800 elo before the season ended, got moved to about 950, and then gained and lost elo to get you tyo where you are.
