So, Maokai is different now?

So, the old Twisted Treeline was somewhere near Zaun, and the new one is in the Shadow Isles. I'm not sure if they're supposed to be completely different maps, or if they're retconning it to be in a new location, or even if the League took over a section of the Shadow Isles as a Field of Justice and closed off the old TT, deeming it too dangerous, I don't know. What I do know is that if they're retconning the Twisted Treeline to have always been in the Shadow Isles, then that means that Maokai is technically a Shadow Isles champion.

I had the same question.... But honestly? I feel like the theme of League is fun first and lore is not even an after thought.

Edit: Disagree huh? Please please explain this to me then.

I believe officially the old TT is still in Zaun, just unused. And Maokai was "born" in the old Treeline.

Yeah. My friend and I were talking about it and we figured they either closed off the old TT, or they transported the TT from Zaun to the Shadow Isles, where it got infected with the undead magic that was there. I like the second one, because it also gives an explanation as to why Ebonmaw's skeleton can be seen there.

So the League deemed the old Twisted Treeline outside of Zaun to much of a danger zone and chose to move it in the middle of an island full of undead?
How does that make any sense?

When does the Institute of War do silly things like 'make sense'? (Seriously, based on their track record, I would not trust them to boil water.)

maybe when dealing with the level of power the league has to contend with...zombies don't rate that high on the "danger" level

When Maokai is "born" he killed 6 champions and Kayle saved an unknow number of summoners (Maokai's Jugement). If anything bigger happens, it would be better is it stays on the Shadow Isles.
