Let's assume these scenarios:

#1 A Trinity Tank bruiser wanting to build Triforce

I want to build Trinity Force

Shop trip #1 after getting ~1000g
Buy components

Shop trip #2 after getting ~1000g
Upgrade + buy components

Shop trip #3 after getting ~1000g
Upgrade + buy components

Shop trip #4 after getting ~1000g
Finish Triforce (total cost of 4070g)

#2 Mage building Deathcap

Shop trip #1 after getting ~1000g
Buy Blasting Wand

Shop trip #2 after getting ~1000g
Do nothing(1140 in bank)

Shop trip #3 after getting ~1000g
Buy NLR

Shop trip #4 after getting ~1000g
Finish Deathcap (total cost of 3600g)

========

You can see at trip #2, the mage cannot buy anything toward his Deathcap despite having the same gold made as the bruiser. The mage's item strength stay the same after trip #2 while the bruiser's increases.

========

So my idea is to break Needlessly Large Rod into components but keep same total cost.

Dominion NLR:
Blasting Wand + Tomes + recipe
860 + 435 + 305 = 1600
Dominion only
Component for Deathcap and Hourglass

=========

New Mage Scenario:
Shop trip #1 after getting ~1000g
Buy Blasting Wand

Shop trip #2 after getting ~1000g
Buy Blasting Wand

Shop trip #3 after getting ~1000g
Buy Dominion NLR

Shop trip #4 after getting ~1000g
Finish Deathcap (total cost of 3600g)

With this item, at trip #2, the mage can buy a blasting wand then upgrade it during trip #3. The NLR hit the field at the same time but there won't be a huge power gap between trip #2 and #3.

=======

Of course, there are other caster specific problems but let's solve 1 at the time.

What do you guys think? I feel that a Dominion specific item would be the easiest way to solve the NLR's issue.

Being around these forums for a while, I think they have a pretty negative view on Deathcap to begin with. Even though I think Sauron's tier guide makes deathcap a tier 1 item. I heard the arguments for Deathcap being it is far too expensive, only gives AP, and lacks other benefits for getting it.

I think that if you want to take Needlessly Large Rod this direction, it would be better to just make a new powerful item for Dominion.

I'm not questioning your logic, rather presenting an alternative.

I've been wanting Rabadon's Deathbeanie for ages.

Right now, even if the enemy team has zero MR and I want to punish them for that, Deathcap is too expensive to justify getting it when I could get other items a lot more quickly, and gain tankiness and utility on top of greater overall power.

I don't really care about the specifics yet, but +1 for the idea of giving my mages options for stylish head-wear.

Spare a thought for Talith saving up for the BF sword needed to build his third Infinity Edge.

I support the idea of Rabadon's Deathbeanie. This idea actually fits into what the OP was saying.

Unless they have literally zero MR, wouldn't Haunting Guise, Abyssal Scepter, and Sorc Shoes be the items to punish them? Or Malady, if it was a better item overall. Deathcap increases your damage by the same % no matter how much MR they have.

It's Jayce though, he could build 5 tiamats and roll everyone.

But on topic, I agree with the train of thought that there simply needs to be more mid-range AP items. Guise, sweeper and Void are nice and all, but after that you're looking at 2800+ for any decent mage items.

AD based champions have different issues. You can't solve them the same way.
