Malzahar is one of my favorite champs, and he can be great if you have a team that can coordinate with him. My tips are:

Passive: Pay attention to how many spells until your next summon and ration your spells accordingly. Always try to enter a fight with a voidling. They also make for a decent harassment tool.

Q. Use this as a poke in lane only sparingly. In most cases E will do this better. This move shines for its solid AOE damage and silence. A 3-second silence. On the entire enemy team. Think about how much that can decide a team fight if timed right. If someone Quicksilver Sashes out of your silence, good. Now you can ult them freely. You can also use this late game to clear massed minions in one fell swoop.

W. This is unreliable to use by itself. Drop it under CC'd enemies, or entire groups, and remember that it counters HP tanks. It's also a very powerful zoning tool. His most recent patch removed the cast time on this, so you can freely throw it out while moving or just before casting other spells.

E. This is the heart of Malz. He lacks any escapes, so keeping your distance (read: completely out of range) is key with him. Use E to do this. You can farm entire lanes without even being present come mid-game, and are the only champ other than Heimerdinger who can push multiple lanes at once. Until that point, use your autoattacks to help push it along. Don't be afraid to push your opponent right to their tower with this, and then either roam or just sit back by your own to wait for the next wave - It's actually a really good tactic for avoiding ganks, and for maintaining mana. You can also use it to zone your opponents by targeting minions near wherever you -don't- want them to be. Late game, you and your allies can use this to harrass pre-teamfight by pushing it down to them via a minion wave. Oh, and Quicksilver Sash's active is completely useless against it.

R. This is where you can make or break Malzahar. Targeting the wrong person, or at the wrong time can ruin everything. In a 1v1, your combo should be E>W>Q>R> Ignite (it can be cast while channeling), which should kill almost anyone, but teamfights get very tricky. Do not open with it unless your team has solid CC to cover you. It's best to use it after the first volley has passed to lock down the DPS, or to save it for interrupting channeling spells (like Katarina's ult). People complain about Quicksilver Sash, but it's not really as big a problem as it's made out to be. First, it means you forced them to divert their build, and second, it only breaks the suppress; they still need to walk out of leash range to stop taking damage. That said, there's almost always a secondary target that's almost as enticing as the first, so you can target them instead. Also, remember that you can cancel your ult at any time (and remember to not accidentally do so). Finally, this move is the ultimate counter-dive tool. I can't tell you how many kills I've gotten by baiting a dive, or simply taking advantage of a momentary overstep. Diving Malz is like chasing Singed, no sane person would do it, but that doesn't stop them from trying.
