” Normally, Karma is just a natural thing. But ta me, it’s a curse.“

Lore:

Quote:
Unlike most who hail from Bildgewater, Carl Shanks never really cared for the sea and its promise of adventurous liberty. Born to a poor seamstress, he had always tried his best to help her out whenever he could, even if it meant stealing and cheating. Such past times were never uncommon in the pirate-infest port town, however, and he often became distracted by the activities and events around town. It wasn’t long until he unwittingly got himself involved in less than honorable dealings, and he eventually found himself in debt to an extremely wealthy and influential merchant who headed an extensive underground Black Market dealing in destructive and deadly relics.

Becoming a Runner for this man to pay off what he owed, which meant collecting mysterious and ominous relics, Shanks one day encountered a mysterious cloaked individual hailing from Ionia who possessed a mystical dagger; he who wielded the gilded blade could amass a fortune like none could ever believe, but merely possessing it would inflict a terrible curse upon the one who used it for selfish reasons. The Stranger saw something in the young Runner’s eyes which drove him to give it to him as a gift, and with it Shanks attempted to create the fortune he needed to be free of servitude. The Stranger’s warning, however, was realized when Shanks, in a fit of anger, stabbed an innocent man to death in an argument, which earned him a hefty sum of gold. Horrified at this turn of events, Shanks fled Bildgewater in search of the Stranger who gave him the dagger, intending to either return it or die by its blade as repentance. His search was fruitless, however, but he turned to the Institute of War in the hopes that becoming a Champion of the League of Legends might accelerate his effort….

Appearance and Personality:
Quote:
Shanks is a rather thin, lanky young man appearing to be in his late teens. He has medium-long brown hair with a thin, shaggy goatee to match, and his skin is slightly tanned from his long days of running amok in Bildgewater. His wardrobe of choice consists of a hooded vest-like garment navy-blue in color, a long sleeved black turtleneck sweater, dark brown leather fingerless gloves, black trousers, and dark brown leather knee-length boots with a large buckle. He also has a leather single-strap pack which crosses from his left shoulder to his right side waist, within which he keeps whatever objects he acquires; hooked across the front of the strap are a few luck-bringing items such as a four-leaved clover, a horshoe, and a rabbit's foot. He is a rather smooth-talking, if a bit paranoid, opportunist who will lie, cheat, steal, and flirt to get what he wants. Though he is a thief, a con man, and a general ne'er do well, he actually does have a moral code by which he lives, though he's generally a very pleasant and friendly guy when you talk to him. Be forewarned, however, because he believes in self-preservation at any cost, even violating his rather particular "no killing" rule if it means survival.

Gameplay

Shanks is intended as a male support whose entire kit revolves around a resource unique to him: Karma takes the form of a counter, as opposed to a meter like most other resources, consisting of a single number that can change constantly depending on what Shanks does in-game. Negative Karma is accumulated through selfish and malicious acts he may commit, and Positive Karma is fueled by supportive and benevolent deeds he might perform. Karma is measured in singular units ranging from - 50 (Negative) to 50 (Positive), and determines the effects of choice few of Shanks' abilities.

Shanks is unique as a support, however, in that his kit actually discourages aggressive play styles. While most other Support type champions are either an invaluable asset or dead weight to a team, controlling Shanks improperly will make him a potential threat to his own team, so it is TITANICALLY advisable to maintain Shanks as an active support for the team as opposed to acting for his own personal gain.

The most important element of Shanks' gameplay is keeping his Karma Positive, as allowing it to dip into the Negative side could spell certain doom for the entire team.

Lucky Charm is the most ideal skill to start with, since it is guaranteed to build Positive Karma, which is necessary to gain the benefits of his other skills. Revolving Fortune should be next, followed by Plouton's Edge, though too much usage of the latter might result in a fast approach to Negative Karma. Maxing out Lucky Charm early is HIGHLY advised in order to accumulate as much Positive Karma as possible. As such, it's the skill that should be used the most often, though occasional use of Revolving Fortune, and situational use of Plouton's Edge, can make Shanks a pillar upon which the rest of the team can stand confidently.

The thing with Revolving Fortune, however, is that it is important to be as near to an ally as possible, as using it without any around Shanks will build Negative Karma, which is not desirable. As long as AT LEAST ONE ally is within range, then Revolving Fortune will ensure a gain in Positive Karma.

Plouton's Edge is the most tricky of Shanks' skills, as it can accumulate Negative Karma pretty quickly. However, it's still useful as long as it can be used to last hit an enemy Minion or Champion, which can earn him double the amount of gold he would normally gain. It's risky to use when his Karma isn't high enough on the Positive side, however, so it's a good idea to only use it for the farming if you're desperate or if your Positive Karma is high enough

Just Desserts makes Shanks a diversion, throwing himself into the fray to return as much damage to attacking enemies as possible while either shielding a vital ally (with Lucky Charm) or attacking an enemy Champion for a critical attack (Plouton's Edge). Karma accumulation technically won't begin anew until the aura vanishes. So Shanks players should take advantage of this to use any ability with impunity as long as the aura lasts.

This is actually a really interesting Idea and I like it. Would be cool to see something like this implemented into the game.
