Concept

Ella was the first character I developed with no set plan other than her being a Yordle. In the process she went through several role swaps, weapons and even looks until I ended up with what is posted below.

Fun Facts

Ella is a yordle!
Her original weapon was going to be something like Ivy’s from Soul Calibur.
She likes to whip and whip it right!….her hair, you fools. Back and forth. Dual song reference there!

Abilities

Hextech Synthesis (Passive) - Ella uses damage and damage received to charge the her capacitor which increases her armor and magic resist per stack. At 10 stacks she gains the capacitor effect, unleashing the full potential of her abilities.

Whiplash - A three part ability in which Ella swings her first whip, then her second and ending with using both on the third strike. With max capacitor she’ll also stun the target champion on the third strike. This ability’s passive permanently increases her magic penetration.

Whirlwind Ella rotates a whip in front of her, absorbing incoming projectiles from the direction she’s facing. Enemies caught in the vortex are slowed while they stay inside of it. After channeling she causes a burst of damage equivalent to the absorbed damage. With max capacitors enemies struck by the burst of damage are also silenced.

Fiery Wave - The yordle ignites her whip in flames and spins them around her. Affected enemies also burn over several seconds. If used with max capacitor enemy champions are knocked back and take additional burn damage.

Dervish - Ella spins her whips on either side, forming a protective shield for several seconds. During this time she is immune to crowd control effects and briefly knock back and silence enemies unlucky enough to get in her way. If used with max capacitor the ability goes for even longer. If canceled early the whips emit a shockwave dispersing the remaining damage. Other abilities cannot be used while Dervish is active.

Lore

Ella was never the shining example of her peers. She had always been indecisive and uncaring when it came to decision making, so when her parents presented her with studying hex technology or arcane studies she settled for pursuing both. She practiced both evenly, often combining the two despite the retort from her peers.

It was unfortunate that their protests about safety and the unstable elements came true. Though initially her project was a success, the clumsy girl dropped the synthesizer she had made. It burst after striking the ground and took most of the lab with it. Ella awoke several hours later to find pieces of the synthesizer fused to her. After seeing the remains of her lab she pieced together what was the left of the instrument, forming two charged rods in which she reforged into weapons. Not knowing what else to do and unable to stay there any longer, Ella had little choice but to seek out the Institute of War and the League of Legends.

Champion Tips

Playing as Champion

Attack! Attack! Attack! And do not die. Attacking and being attacked causes Ella to build up her capacitor quickly.
Make each hit count. Nothing hurts Ella more than mana loss.
When using Dervish use it to guide enemy champions or delay them for a strategic advantage for the team.

Playing Against Champion

Shutting Ella is as easy as not letting her attack things. If she can’t attack then it takes her longer to build capacitor.
If her capacitor is up play it safe until she uses an ability to get rid of it.
Unless your champion isn’t hard pressed about silences and can handle a couple of bumps, it’s recommended to stay away from her Dervish when its active.

Story

Ella had never really been the one to shine. Unlike her brothers, Rush and Pike, as well as most of those of her people, she was just as content living day by day as those with obsessions over this and that. It was at her parent’s urging that she was choosing between hex technology research or arcane studies. Being indecisive and uncaring, the young yordle girl came to the conclusion that she was equally interested in both and could not choose between them. So she wound up picking both of them.

No matter which side of the fence she was on, poor Ella was always the target of ridicule and harassment from her colleagues. Often termed as being bland, run of the mill and uninspiring, Ella finally found her determination several years of keeping to herself. Late one night she was working on an experiment which combined volatile elemental energy with unrefined hextech material, producing a new form of energy. Excited about her discovery Ella took the first ever Hexemental Synthesizer and attempted to leave. She hadn’t even made it out of the room before she stumbled and dropped the object. Upon striking the ground the Synthesizer exploded, taking most of the lab with it.

Ella awoke in the infirmary a few days later. Heavily bandaged and still sore from an event she did not remember, the yordle stumbled past whispers of failure, freak and similar gossip that could be heard as she passed by groups of her peers. Raw lightning was still sparking over discarded material and metal that littered the room she had once known to be her lab. Picking up the remains of her creation, Ella saw the bandaged reflection of herself in the glassy surface. Pulling the bandages away Ella found that pieces of the Synthesizer had permanently been attached to her body, seared into place. Rage overcame her sadness and the room erupted into a maelstrom of metal and magic.

When the storm had subsided Ella found herself collapsed on the floor. As soon as she stood up she noticed that the materials that had remained had formed a peculiar pattern that spiraled outward from the center of the room. With a new drive and ambition, Ella fused the pieces together into twin rods which could be contorted and straightened when manipulated by magic. With the resentful looks that her peers were now giving her, Ella had little to no choice but to seek out the family she had left. It was time to visit the Institute of War. After entering its doorways Ella found herself filled with a strange sense of pride and welcoming. She wondered to herself, is this what it feels like to come home?

“I’ve seen many aspiring champions in my time. We have saved many of their lives by turning them away. But this one, this one had a sense of yearning to join. You could see it in her face when she walked in the door. She had heard the word too many times before. She was not going to accept it now.” - Council Member of the Institute of War

Observation

It was just another day at the Institute of War for Ella. With nowhere else to go she had long since accepted that this place was no her home. So here was skipping through the halls of the Institute, using one of her whips as a jump rope as she wandered around. The few people that crossed her path couldn’t help but smile or laugh at the girl as she strolled by with not a care in the world.

Today she was traveling down a corridor she had yet to explore and found herself gazing longingly at all sorts of art, sculptures and trinkets that were on display in this wing of the Institute. However, she kept up her pace as she continued past large double doors. As soon as she passed by she stopped, took several steps back and looked at the carved panthers that seemed to stare down at her.

“The truest opponent lies within,” she said as she read the engraving above them. “Not sure what that means, but I’ll bite.”

Without hesitation and with much effort Ella managed to push the door open far enough to slip inside.

Reflection

Ella fell through some large curtains as cheering erupted around her. Fighting off the fabric assailant she spun to find herself looking down at a crowd of yordles that was now looking up at her. Her eyes went wide in horror as she scurried backwards against the wall, trying her hardest to slip back out of view. From either side of her someone laughed.

“Don’t tell me little Bella-Ella has stage fright,” came a familiar voice.
“I’m surprised she didn’t give the crowd a fright,” came another.
“True that!” said the first one. “Let’s get ol’ cyclops back on the podium then.”

Ella looked back and forth between her brothers Rush and Pike in confusion. Together they preceded to lift her back up so that the crowd could see the three of them. As soon as she came back into view the crowd bellow erupted in cheers, chants and whistles. Holding on to their sister tightly the two grinned and waved at the crowd as their captive struggled to get away.

“Stop that!” Pike hissed at her. “Enjoy this moment, sis!”
“Yeah!” Rush said as he let go, throwing both of his fists into the air. “We’re the most awesome things in Runeterra!”

Pike joined his brother in cheering. As he let go of Ella she fell backwards on to the platform below. She watched them carry on for a moment before she slowly crawled to the edge and peered over it. She looked down at the celebrating crowd, raising her hand just high enough for the crowd to see. They immediately responded with another wave of cheers. Cautiously she slowly pulled herself up to be in complete view of the crowd who went ballistic.

“Of course, by we he means you,” Pike leaned in to whisper to her.
“I heard that!” Rush shouted. “We are all awesome. She just happens to be more awesome.”
“Ha! True that!” Pike shouted as he grabbed Ella’s other hand and lifted it up for the crowd.

Ella couldn’t help but smile now as she began waving to the crowd, each pass bringing louder shouts and whistles up at her. With her brothers the three became hams before the crowd, pumping themselves up, cheering alongside the yordles below and playfully bumping into each other. After awhile the celebration finally began to subside, the crowd watching and waiting for something. She looked down at them, smiling and breathless.

“Is this why you want to join the League?” Pike spoke in a voice that wasn’t his own.
“Why wouldn’t it be? This is amazing! Woo!” spoke Rush, who also spoke in a different voice.

It was then that it was dawning on Ella. She placed her hands on the stone railing and looked down at the people, frowning at the thought that they weren’t real; that her brothers weren’t really there. She stood up straight, her eyes fixed on the crowd.

“As wonderful as this is it is not why I wish to join the League,” she whispered. “I want to prove something of myself, that I’m not as useless as my colleagues and family thinks I am. I want to prove to the world that little Ella is more than what meets the eye.”

“Success has always been your greatest opponent, Ella,” said Pike.
“What makes you think you’ll find victory here?” spoke Rush.
“There is no where else to find such a reward for me,” she whispered. “My place is here.”

Rush and Pike leaned back to look at each other. They gave a single nod, grinned and simultaneously gave Ella an open palmed slap on the back. Ella had to scramble to prevent herself from falling over the edge, the two posing as her brothers laughing hysterically.

“Welcome to the League, Ella,” Pike chuckled at her.
“Don’t let the door hit you on the butt on the way out!” Rush said as he held his sides from laughing so hard.

She could still hear the two giggling when the scene subsided, leaving her in the darkness of the chamber she had managed to squeeze into. The synthesizer parts and glow from her weapons gave the room a mix of blow and green dimmed lights. Behind her the door slid open, letting actual light pour into the room. She got to the doorway before stopping to look back.

“Thank you for this opportunity,” Ella said as she bowed her head and left the chamber.

Overview of Abilities:

Ella is meant to be a mid-ranged hybrid caster and assassin. She’s not exactly squishy but she’s definitely far from being an offtank. Her passive gives her the opportunity to not only survive in the middle of team fights but also potentially allows her to survive ganks that others in her class might fall prey to. Though unlike most of those types, she does want to take a few hits, magic or physical, so that she can build up stacks of Capacitor and unleash her weapon’s full powers.

Her [Q], Whiplash, is her primary damage ability as it can hit a target, or targets, up to three times. Not only can it hit multiple targets, doing damage with each pass, but it can also stun those caught in range if used after reaching max capacitor charges. Also on the third strike the range is also increased as Ella launches herself forward. This ability also gives her a permanent magic penetration to make the ability even more devastating when maxed. Whiplash should be taken first and maxed by 9.

Whirlwind, [W], is a counter ability that can launch a single attack back at a caster. Perfect for mid-fight to surprise an enemy or even for a saving burst if anticipated right. Not only does it counter but it can also slow anyone caught in the vortex as well, helping to fend off attackers or pursue those that are trying to retreat. Using this ability with maxed capacitor can silence the enemy as well. No running, no casting! Whirlwind should be maxed last.

[E], Fiery Wave, is like an AoE but only hits those directly in front of Ella. The ability causes a burn effect like Ignite but does magical damage instead. It can also affect multiple targets at once. With max capacitor it even provides a knock back. By using [W] first to slow them, waiting for a max capacitor and then using [E] and following up with a full [Q] assault it will maximize her damage burst. Fiery Wave should be maxed second.

Her ultimate can be used defensively as it can offensively. [R], Dervish, surrounds Ella with her spinning whips which protects her as she picks up momentum, knocks back opponents all while damaging them and guiding which way she wants them to go. Not exactly a heavy damage dealer but the damage does stack up per hit. An effective way to use this defensively is protecting a fleeing teammate by knocking followers away. Doing it offensively Ella can constantly knock enemies into turrets or towards teammates for kills. All while being immune to snares, silences, slows and other forms of crowd control.

Overall, Ella could be quite the overachiever on the fields of justice. She’s able to roll in, smack down and assault enemies at a fairly decent range while being able to hold her own one on one or in team fights. This yordle comes into the League with something to prove and the determination to better than she ever was!

Alright so we got ourselves a passive that makes her tankier when she needs to be tankier. After skimming through everything else, I really see some Atmogs or atmallet potential here. Question though, does using the full stacks consume the stacks on ability use?

Okay so we got some aoe whipping skill that deals AP based damage. So the numbers seem alright, I'd have to see it in game to judge that. Question about the stun, is it for every use or jut the first or last one? And does every use cost mana or just the first one sorta like rumble's spear. Neat dps move in general.

Another aoe damaging move but this time with a spell reflect and some CC. This is a pretty powerful ability but it has a lengthy cooldown so that's alright. I like the spell reflect for that has yet to be done. Sorta is a ramped up version on Fiora's counter but without the passive so that's alright.

More aoe whipping. Idk if you saw that, but you essentially have 3 similar abilities (not really but it's still 3 aoe attacks) Which is fine, but if you'd want maybe you can condense the second two abilities into one and make room for something a little different. But otherwise this is a neat skill. Burn and knock back is useful for this caster.

Wow dude this is a pretty powerful ultimate. I don't know how often the strikes happen but you can be stacking up some serious damage, true damage at that. Ane more knock back and silence? So if I keep ramming someone in a wall they will be constantly knocked back and silenced until my massive amount of true damage kills them? Maybe I don't understand but this seems immensely overpowered even without the knock back and silence. It's a cool idea, but the numbers are pretty intense. And CC immunity and extra movespeed. I"m sorry my friend but this is one of the most powerful skills I've ever seen. The idea is cool, but it has way too many effects and the numbers are too high.

OVERALL: I think League of Legends really needs a whip champion and this yordle could be the one they need. However, with all the possibilities of a whip, you certainly have a lot of aoe damage abilities and not much else. Sure you got a little tumble and a damage reflect, but other than that this just seems to be one whirling dervish of aoe damage. My absolutely favorite part is the passive which really screams Tanky AP carry. It's a great passive and I think you should be proud of it. Swain and Morgana should be afraid of this little tornado of whips.

Keep up the good work. It was a fun read.

Dead. Died laughing at the pun.

Revived to comment on the rest.

For her passive, yes, stacks are consumed on ability use.

Q's stun is used on the third part of the ability and yes, it's like Rumble's spear as far as cost goes.

Actually, they're three separate moves. Q is linear, W is a cone, E is the only one that's an actual AoE. It's also the only that shows that with a 380 radius.

I forgot to add in the R that it can only affect take effect once every 3 seconds or so but I'll also scale down the true damage to only do (+.323 AP) true damage or something around that and the with its movement cap she'll still be slower than Rammus' Q. I'll get to work tweaking later to not be so powerful.

To recap on the AoE. Q is a killshot like Rumble's spear, W would be like Darius' E, so they are different types of abilities. She's also supposed to be a tanky AP as she needs to be in the fray and taking damage in order to do her best. In that case she couldn't be a regular squish AP or she'd die.... a lot.

Any way, thank you for the review! I'm glad you enjoyed reading it as well. By all means, check back when I've made teh adjustments and tell me what you think. :]

For the ultimate I completely removed the +AP and lowered the damage by 10 which puts it at 40/90/140 true damage and lowered the silence time to 1.8 seconds with each hit. I also added in that champions can only be affected by the ultimate once every 3 seconds so it caps at a total 700 true damage at 18 and 850 true damage if capacitor is up.

On a side note here I am considering lowering the damage again or converting it to a full AP, no true damage, ability as it can hit multiple enemies, each being applied with the effect. I.e. Ella runs into TF who takes 140 true damage and is silenced for a second, before he can be hit again Ella runs into Tryndamere doing another 140 and silencing him for a second. If they are at least three seconds apart she can ping pong between them until the ultimate is done.
