NOTE: Due to some people pointing this out, I am altering the assistant game designer credentials. You can now get +1 point for being 1750+ solo ranked, or 1750+ team ranked IF you played in 10 or more of the past 20 games of the team in question. This is cumulative with top tier competitive experience points. This should be on the job board soon...

Hi All,

I'm still hiring game designers here at Riot, and there are a variety of opportunities. The main advantages here are:
1) Big audience. You can work on stuff that is played by a LOT of people.
2) High degree of delegation. Even associates have a significant level of decision making and responsibility, much more so than is typical of the industry.
3) We compensate above market, and we sensitive to industry transfers when there is significant value to us in your intellectual capabilities. You don't necessarily need to take a huge pay cut to move out of game engineering or another industry entirely to come to the design team here (within reason, sorry investment bankers and law firm partners ;p)
4) Fun work environment. It's a really fun company to work at, and the design team is definitely fun to be a member of.
5) Photogenic boss. Just saying, I look good in pictures.

You can apply via the website -- there are instructions in the careers section here:
http://www.riotgames.com/careers/design

Entry Level
We are hiring entry level primarily as Champion Designers and Live Designers. The first makes champions, the second does remakes and live balance. For live designers, there are also territory specific roles, such as the Korea position (which we just filled), and the China position (which we have not filled).

We also have an associate editor position open, which is a good gateway into other things in addition to being a big opportunity now to improve the quality of the game.

An ideal entry-level GAME design candidate (as opposed to the editor role, etc) will usually have the following three characteristics:
1a) World class problem solving skills (very well educated, or just an extremely smart person)
OR
1b) A remarkable intuitive grasp for League of Legends (generally backed up with deep existing insight on it, and a high elo rating)

AND
2a) Super passionate about League of Legends with many hundreds or possibly thousands of games played.
OR
2b) Relatively passionate about LoL, with a really impressive background playing other games (e.g. hardcore MMO raider, top WoW pvper, dedicated shooter player, top TCG player, thousands of hours played of some other multiplayer game, etc)

AND
3) Self-aware and humble enough to take negative feedback, and a good balanced perspective about what is fun for everyone else.

A note on the China Balance Position: If you have a deep understanding of the mainland Chinese gaming culture, and are highly fluent in English (we strongly prefer you went to undergrad or grad school at an English speaking University), you may be a good candidate if you meet the designer profile in general.

A note for people with advanced degrees or special backgrounds: We occasionally hire people with specialist knowledge, such as those with Ph.Ds, J.Ds, or VERY deep competitive gaming experience, into design. We have ways of making the entire position structured such that it's attractive and makes sense. We want to fit the right job to exceptional candidates when we stumble upon exceptional candidates and don't have the right position yet in existence.

Mid-Level Positions
These are fairly similar to above, but we can sometimes carve out interesting positions with more responsibility. We don't talk about everything we are working on here, so you may be surprised that we have opportunities not listed on the site that are a great fit for you anyway. Additionally, if you do have good experience at a company we respect or on a game we respect, there's a good chance you'll get some sort of secondary evaluation.

Leadership Roles
We are hiring a number of lead designer positions, and honestly, if you are a good fit, we can find something sufficiently interesting for you to do. I'd love to delegate a ton of my job away, and thus far, can't due to the number of leads we have.

The profile of a lead for us is either someone who understands design and has a few years of professional experience on high-quality products and has the right personality to lead, or someone who has been in leadership roles professionally, and wants to switch companies.

For those of you taking a 'step up', all I can say is, you may as well try if it might be a good fit for you -- the product is a high profile product, and you can grow quickly here and have a big impact.

For those of you who are already in lead roles, please give us a chance if you think there might be a fit at all even if you don't see the exact fit on the site. Don't assume we can't make it work, because honestly, we often can if the fit is good. In some cases, "lead designer" here might mean a scope of responsibility and rate of pay significantly higher than 'director of design' at a smaller company. Or, in other cases, you might be able to go from "lead designer" at your present company to a similar position here, but on work you find more interesting with a really elite team, and attractive compensation. Lastly, as a player-focused company, design is a really key part of what we do here at Riot, while at a lot of companies, it's more of a workhorse department where most leadership is done elsewhere. This in general means that you may be able to do things that you would not be able to do in your present role for the good of the game.

International Candidates
We want to get the best candidate we possibly can for every job we hire. Sometimes that means that we want to hire an international candidate. While this is all case-by-case, I can say that for the right candidate, we put in a lot of effort, and are in general a fairly international company.

Relocation
We don't have an absolute policy on this, but I craft relocation packages to work for people and I've yet to have a situation where someone was NOT happy with the relocation package. In general, we are fairly relocation friendly, as part of our overall goal of getting the best candidates to work here as soon as possible.

Looking forward to resumes!

Regards,
Zileas
