Hi there everybody.

I'm Ethix and I have played a lot of ranked games with Ryze all up and down the elo spectrum... (Between 1300-1900 elo) For many, many months now. Over 300 this season to be exact and countless normals.

With Ryze on the rise I decided to take the time to write out who he masters and who masters him in mid lane.

- For obvious reasons his true counter power doesn't come out til about 5-7 and after you get Tear, boots and typically at least a catalyst.

- My ideal typical end game build consists of Archangel Staff, Merc Treads, Frozen Heart, Banshees Veil, WoTA, and Void Staff, with the only variation being Sorc Boots and RoA if I get fed super early.

- I exclusively run him with teleport to give him a Twisted Fatesque map presence and 9/0/21 masteries.

Mid Lane - Strong Counters (post level 6):

Karthus - As he doesn't have heavy burst or sustain or escapes its typically easy to kite karthus fairly well and you should win every exchange with him so long as your ult is up, although its not as easy to stop him from farming you should easily be able to out exchange and out push this champion and force him out of lane just be mindful of his ult

Heimerdinger - Easily countered, dodge his stun and avoid his turrets and you will force him out of lane with one combo

Katarina - Her shunpo alone allows her to be countered, wait for her to use it or bait it out along with her ult and let the nuke begin. A good kat will farm with her Q against a Ryze until mid game.

Morgana - This one is a little tough, you will win every exchange with her if you manage to dodge her snare. Two things to keep in mind here are keeping her in lane by pushing as hard as she is and getting the combo down on her after you bait out the snare. Just don't forget about her ult when you are going in for the kill.

Sion - You can do this one of two ways nuke his shield down to make him waste mana and deny his farm, or nuke him down after his shield explodes to force him out of lane. Doing this while keeping the lane pushed far enough that he can't gank other lanes secures the lane success and a fully shut down sion.

Veigar - Because you have no AP on Ryze and you out sustain him this should be an extremely easy lane win. Deal with him the same as you would Heimerdinger

Lux - Her long cooldowns and poor lane sustain allows you to easily out push her and nuke her when she falls out of position. Just be careful of her ult and snares.

Zilean - Since he is forced get near you to place his bombs on you it is very easy to out exchange him the only thing you have to be careful of is being baited by his ult and the early game bomb/ignite combos

----------------------------------

Mid Lane - Even Match Up ( These champions give Ryze issues due to heavy sustain/burst, or Hard CC and can hold up against him, but the battle can go either way depending on micro skill and jungler pressure)

Akali - Earlier on when Ryze doesn't have heavy magic resist Akali can match or outburst Ryze and she also is a strong push/sustain. Around the time you finish a banshee veil you will start to notice a difference with the burst exchanges. If she hasn't ganked your enemies to the point of snowball yet you should be ok just keep her in lane.

Anivia - The big issue here is dodging the stun, if you can dodge it usually you can get a good combo off, if you didn't you are probably on your way back to base pissed off you just took a 1k damage combo. If her egg is down and you can dodge enough stuns you will see the lane turn in your favor if she hasn't been blue buffed all game.

Brand - The hard part about brand is, he will out burst you with his combo, every time. The best thing you can do is maneuver your way around his skill shots and try to catch him afterwards and force an exchange then. The more aggressive the brand is the harder your life will be.

Cassiopeia - The saving grace with Ryze vs Cassiopeia is her ult has a very long cooldown and if you can manage to catch her in a combo you will either kill her or force her out of lane. If you cant bait out her ult you are better off shoving your lane and going to gank another lane in the mean time because she zones Ryze far too hard to waste your time trying to exchange with her with her ult up. It is best to work with your jungler or try to catch her face checking if you want to snag the kill as flash and/or her ult will be her only escape.

Kennen - This guy is annoying. It isn't so much that he dominates you but you really have to pay attention to his ability to stun you, this means watching out for his auto attack mark charge, dodging his q's and making sure that if you do hit get with a mark you stay away from him as to not get hit with his zap right after. If you can dodge his Q after he throws it you can usually get a few spells off on him, don't force a burst fight on him unless you know that your burst will get the kill because his ult will win every time. Also, if his energy bar is low that is also a good time to start a combo attempt on him.

Malzahar - The secret to Malzahar is to bait out his ult, once you do that you can usually force him out of lane in a good exchange, since he farms and pushes so well with Malefic Visions you are better off farming and biding your time until the opportunity arises to exchange after his ult is out or until you are tanky enough to sustain what damage he can do with his combo vs yours.

Xerath - Xerath isn't very tough for Ryze, if it weren't for his ult, I would put him as a Strong counter. The trick here is to dodge his Q, the better you are at anticipating the Q the better chance you will have to force an exchange as all he can do if he misses is try to run away or ult you to scare you off. Towards mid game when you have considerable magic resist/spell vamp if you can bait out his ult and his Q then go in right after he will lose the next exchange and either die or have to go home.

Vladmir - Vladmir is another simple champion to deal with, the only problem is his sustain and his escape will make it complicated to burst him. It's highly unlikely you will be able to kill him with out a little help from the jungle. Usually the only sure way to kill Vlad alone involves a blood pool, then a tower dive, and then a flash followed by a hope the tower doesn't keep you focused as you run away. With that said you are better off shoving the lane and going to another lane to gank so then their team can get mad at him for picking Vlad and not being able to control your roaming.

Swain - Swain is annoying, he will deal with you by spamming his dot while you try to farm and trying to bait you in with his ult. If you can avoid getting baited in by his ult you shouldn't have a problem farming but its unlikely you will be able to kill him as he will out sustain any burst with his ult and will probably have blue runes spinning around him all of the lane phase. The best thing to do is try to keep him in lane and wait for your jungler or attempt to out push him with blue buff if you get it.

----------------------------

Mid Lane - Counters Ryze (Very tough to win against these due to heavy burst, lane push, zoning capability and sustain)

Fizz - This is a very, very hard counter to early/mid game Ryze. You cant farm and if you try he will typically kill you in one burst when you go near him. Once you get to about level 8 you start to be able to stand toe to toe with him if you managed to not feed him yet. It is fairly easy to manage him later on when you are considerably tanky as you out burst him but it will still be a challenge to actually finish him off with out him escaping. If you are stuck against him your best bet is to tower farm, and call/ping your mias when he goes roamin'.

Kassadin - Not so hard of a counter, but still very tough. You cant engage kassadin as every time you go near him he will silence you and if you do manage to catch up with him he is already riftwalked away. The best way to deal with this is to out push him as best as you can, focus on farming only and wait for jungle assistance. Don't try to trade exchanges with him early game and keep an eye out for his ignite after exchanges and roaming ability because its likely he will have you shoved until mid game.

Le Blanc - A solid early game hard counter to Ryze is Le Blanc. If you are against her, don't push and don't plan on farming much. The only true way to get a handle on her is to get blue buff then out push her as best as you can from a distance. Towards mid game if she hasn't snowballed too hard on your team or by tower diving you with her instagib ult you will eventually out tank her burst and be able to deal with her well, and eventually you will out burst her but this wont be until late game.

Twisted Fate - A pushing counter to Ryze, this champion wont be very tough to lane against exchange wise, but what will end up happening is he will push the lane all the way to your tower then run off to go ult somewhere and no mia or ward will stop this from being successful. Then your team will see you at your tower trying to last hit minions and think you suck. Your best bet is to try to keep him low health by forcing small exchanges when possible to make him reconsider going off somewhere with his ult. All of this while dodging his cones and avoiding his stuns.

Pantheon - Being a typical mage counter, pantheon likes to spam his spears and wait for you to overextend so he can burst you with his stun/e/spear/ignite combo. Much like leblanc it wont be easy to farm against him and you are better off biding your time until you get tanky enough and bursty enough to force him to reconsider being aggressive. Until then, you will likely be sitting on your tower last hit farming hoping he doesn't go ult bot lane on their tower in the meantime.

Ahri - While not being a counter exactly, you will probably not be winning this lane. If her ult is up and she catches you with a charm, you might as well open your shop button and see what to buy next because you wont be surviving. If you manage to catch her and her ult is up, you wont be killing her. Her auto attack is so much better then Ryze's that she will have your tower down if she so chooses or she will have you pushed for so long her roaming is inevitable anyway. Your best bet here is to get good at dodging her charm, and try to force small exchanges or be hyper aggressive after her ult is down.

Mordekasier - The biggest counter here is the unpredictable sustain he has with his shield and spell vamp. You will constantly find yourself thinking you can kill him just to find out that you cant and now you are probably now going to die instead of him. While farming and exchanges will appear to go well, the illusion that you can kill him when you really cant is what ends up getting you countered on Ryze with this match up. The best advice here is to play smart and focus on other lanes and your personal farm.

---------------------------------

Thanks for reading, feel free to post comments and if this is liked well enough I can throw in top lane counters as well. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

(Edit: If you don't see a specific champ up here it is because I have little to no experience against them in lane in ranked games, e.g: Nunu, Annie, Viktor, Orianna, Talon etc...)

How do you push as hard as Morgana using Ryze?

I don't see how any of those heroes counter ryze, especially Fizz and Kassadin. Ryze has insane range on his Q even to the point where it outranges Kassadin's Q. His Q-W-Q combo has amazing range and burst damage too letting him win any trade. It's also easy as hell to land.

The only way to counter a good ryze is to push the hell out of the lane early because he can't clear waves until he has a decent mana pool built up.

Except Ryze is counter ahri. Otherwise, nice.

Good effort, but I disagree with most of your counters. You should not be having any issues with TF, Pantheon, Ahri or Fizz.

You didn't add Talon. So far no Ryze has ever got to touch me in mid without jungle ganks/help.

Even if it's for 1 sec, a silence destroys Ryze's chance to retaliate, and most of them get too scared and go back once they see their hp get from 100 to 40 in one EQW.

EDIT: To add up, ryze's chance to 1v1 relies on his comboing ability, and his sustain through his ult, as he has to spam a target to get the cd's running. Talon's E has the same (if not wider) range than Ryze's Q, which is the widest range skill Ryze can retaliate/harrass with. A talon that runs manaregen runes can E-W-Q a ryze and start walking back even before his silence finishes, letting him harass Ryze a lot and deny his farm by quite a while. Lategame Ryze is a problem to everyone,as he builds really tanky on all aspects, but earlygame he's really REALLY squishy, and a good talon can catch up to him and burst him down repeatedly and easily pre and post 6.

Post 6, even if Ryze has his heal up, a Talon with ult can E-Q-W-R him, where if he wants to go for the kill, just pops ignite right after E (for extra 15% true dmg) and to deny Ryze's countersustain.
