Ryze. Morgana. Annie. Easy champs to learn on and cheap by IP price.

Strong mid picks are Cassiopea, Brand, Kennen, Xerath, Ahri, Ryze, Karthus (All of those are hard to play too)

Other "good" picks are Annie, Anivia, Kassadin, Leblanc, Swain (All of those either are outclassed, suck late game, or really farm depedant)

Galio is really good mid too because he is anti AP. Build him off tank though.

Gragas is good too

From my experience

I suggest Luxanna.

Her slow and stun make awesome DPS and allow quick getaways.
also from her "E" its optimal for getting more minion kills then the opposing mid.

Ryze gets picked on in mid by a lot of champs that outrange him. I wouldn't learn how to AP carry with Ryze mid. Maybe solo top.

Well, wanting to learn mid, you'd probably wish to start with some who can mid, and has all the traits necessary for mid, but is weak in all aspects as mid. Having a weak, but completely viable mid will make you strong in all these areas (to compensate for having a weak champion)

Crazy as it sounds , go Janna mid.

Morgana in mid is actually incredibly easy, w becomes a *click to farm* button and e makes you nearly ungankable (especially combined with q and r). If you're friend is decent enough with skill shots (landing her q is much more crucial than people think...) then Morg is only 1350 and she's faceroll fun
Annie's always another good champ for mid, fairly easy farm, tibbers of death (especially combined with passive), and she's only 450 ^^

I'd second the suggestion of Brand, Annie or Morgana. Morgana being the easiest to survive the lane and Annie being the most straight forward champion. Brand is not as hard to do decent on as peeps make him out to be, he's just hard to be AMAZING at imo.

Annie, great last hitting, although if you miss you get mana starved, a free stun, and a pedobear
Also Ryze.
