This is a short guide of how to play Lux, yet it does not tell you EXACTLY what items to get. Why, do you ask? Because I have noticed that it is far better to find your own build that you feel confortable with, than having a build you have found on the internet and not know how to play with it.

THIS GUIDE SHOWS EXACTLY HOW I PLAY LUX, SO THIS MIGHT NOT BE THE GUIDE FOR EVERYONE
-------------------------------------------
1. Runes & Items

- My runes are mana per lvl, with magic penetration as well. My total mana + from runes at lvl 18 is ca.500, while my magic penetration is somewhere around 6.5 - 7.

THIS IS THE LIST OF ITEMS THAT YOU NEED TO BUY, PREFERABLY IN ORDER!
- Tear of the Goddess http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wik...of_the_Goddess [Get this first in order to build the 1000+ mana from early stages of the game].
- Ioanian Boots of Lucidity http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wik...ts_of_Lucidity [This is far much better than the magic pene boots because you need Cooldown Reduction!]
- Morello's Evil Tome http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wik...%27s_Evil_Tome [After you get this item, you will have 40% Cooldown Reduction, 40% is max.]
- Archangel's Staff http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wik...ngel%27s_Staff [This is good to get, because of the runes spec which increases your total mana, thus increases your AP. Also, there will be some more items with mana.]
- Rabadon's Deathcap http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wik...n%27s_Deathcap [Very important to have, to increase your ability power even more.]
- Lich Bane http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Lich_Bane [With enough ability power, this item will help a lot when it comes down to your auto attacks. It will be a huge boost in your dmg, even late game!]

For the last item, there are many choices you can take.

If you are having a great game, many kills and such, I wouls suggest you to buy a Mejai's Soulstealer http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wik...7s_Soulstealer early in the game. If not, and now you are at the last slot, you can get a Rod of Ages http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Rod_of_Ages. Rod of Ages is good if you are not good enough at not getting killed. It will increase your HP, Mana and AP, so overal it is a good item to have. As for other choices, it is up to you. ANYTHING that gives you AP & Mana is very good.
-------------------------------------------

2. Masteries

I go with 2/7/21. Here is a list of what you MUST HAVE!
- Perseverance http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Perseverance [Health and Mana regen is always good. Either you are mid, lane or just pushing it will help you a lot. With such masteries, the need to go back and leave your team, in order to regen HP and Mana will be avoided many times.
- Expanded Mind http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Expanded_Mind [Increased mana is always good, the more mana you have the more spells you can cast. + With the item build I wrote down, it will increase your AP as well.]
- Meditation http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Meditation [Mana regen is very important, as stated above; avoid going back all the time to regen.]
- Intelligence http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Intelligence [With the item build I posted, this is needed in order to get max Cooldown Reduction!]
- Strength of Spirit http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wik...ngth_of_Spirit [Late game when you will have a big pool of mana, this mastery will help out with your HP regen as well. Having ca.50 hp regen at lvl 18 with is something normal. Again, this to avoid backing up all the time. You are a support class, you need to be in fights and support!]
-------------------------------------------

3. How to play Lux

IMPORTANT:this is how I play with the item build I wrote down and the mastery choices I have made!

Lux is a great CC character. [CC stands for Crowd Control]. You have a lot of CC because of your stuns and AoE slow. You are rather squishy but you have so much CC you can get out of trouble most of times.

Choice of spells
Start of by maximizing Lucent Singularity, your AoE slow/dmg.
Max out Light Binding, your stun.
In the end, max out Prismatic Barrier, the shield buff.

Clarity http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Clarity and flash
http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Flash is what you need to have.
AGAIN! You are a support character, you are important in team fights! Better be there than backing up for mana/hp regen!
Clarity will help you regen some mana, and Flash will save your life, MAAAAAAAAAAAANY times. Flash can also be used to chase down an enemy, but make sure you don't flash into a trap/ambush.

You should have a lot of mana regen, so use it! Harassing early game, late game WHAT EVER! You must do it! In teamfights, when both teams face eachother but nobody went in to open the fight, I always cast my stun and AoE at the enemy. Sometimes I manage to stun an enemy, and my team charges in for the kill. Sometimes my AoE can soften the enemy and give the opportunity for easy and fast kills.

With 40% Cooldown Reduction, you can use your ulti in order to open a fight if you manage to hit 4-5 of the enemy players, or even to scare them off while defending against a larger number of enemies. Your ulti will be back up in no time!

Double Rainbow, as I like to call it is the best 1 kill combo for Lux. This will do a huge amount of dmg on your target. Here is the rotation:
Stun the target - Cast your AoE, but DO NOT DETONATE yet - Use your ulti on the target - Detonate your AoE fast after the ulti.

It requires quick fingers and thinking. If you catch an enemy wondering off to far from his group in teamfights, you have what it takes to blast him from distance.

Having trouble with enemies chasing you down? If you have Flash + your stun and AoE slow, you will manage to get out of trouble. First, throw your stun at the enemies chasing you down. Then, throw down your AoE BUT DO NOT DETONATE, let it be there in order to slow down a group of enemies. If they are still to close, and you are far away from your base use flash. If they keep chasing, your stun and AoE will be ready to use once more when they get close enough.
-------------------------------------------

I hope this guide will help you, if you are new or even as an experienced LoL player who wants to test out Lux. If you wish more help, add me on LoL and we can talk there as well.

Thank you for taking your time to read the guide, it was fun writing it

PS: I WELCOME REPLIES WITH CRITICISM! THIS WILL HELP ME EDIT THE GUIDE AND MAKE IT AS GOOD AS POSSIBLE.

hmm.. perhaps I should try it... I normally go straight for Deathcap or Ionian boots depending on how well I am farming and skip the mana from tear. I run Clarity it always seems to be ready when i need a mana refill.

I like Ghost over Flash..... flash is just too short a range.... since you are normally at the back of the fight you can see trouble coming and ghost away... plus you are likely to hit with your snare if someone jumps you.

I like the items you get other than AA, you aren't stacking mana, you don't have RoA or Banchee's or Frozen heart... so you only get the bonus Ap from the AA mana and you don't get lich bane untill late

@Narvuntien: Remember I have 500+ mana because of runes at lvl 18. And I like flash more because, if I get stunned, the moment I get out I flash a short distance and stun them. If I had ghost, I couldnt do such a thing, they would have the time to apply some sort of CC on me to kill me. But hey, thats the way I play and if Ghost works for you, go ahead and use it .

UPDATE
I have uploaded 2 pictures of my first 2 ranked games ever, played with lux, with random players and not premades.

Wow, I think my ears are hurting, with the bold caps. In any case, you say that your guide doesn't tell you exactly what to get, except that it does ("NEED TO BUY," huh?). You haven't suggested much alternates or what-not. So, excuse my condescension, and here are some thoughts...

The runeset you have is a typical caster setup, so it's pretty solid.

Clarity is generally a no-no after getting decent runes. With Meditation, Doran's/Meki, and runes, you should be able to use your spells properly without mana troubles. Save the summoner spells for Flash, Ghost, Ignite, Exhaust, potentially Clairvoyance, or even Fortify. Don't forget that Lux is a great support; please don't play her as a run-of-the-mill AP burst. Which leads into...

Skills. If you're solo-laning, Lucent Singularity should be your first choice, to farm and harass. Your 2nd point should go right into Light Binding. From then on, prioritize R>E>W>Q. If you're with a partner, start with Light Binding (so you can harass and kill easier), and then go R>E>W>Q. Prismatic Barrier is not a skill to be underestimated-- remember that in teamfights it's basically a double shield for 5 people, if you aim correctly. It can also save others or your own life while you're running, whether from Ignite, one last auto-attack, whatever. Light Binding is not worth it to max early because the damage increase/CDR for the double snare isn't worth the mana early game. Remember that Light Binding is a snare, NOT a stun. Continuing from the support angle, you should never let anyone die while running (AOE slow and double snare, plus shield). With Finales FunkeIn, you should be good with sniping and tracking with skill-shots, as it can net you sly kills left and right.
Again, the rule-of-thumb is, Lux was made to be an off-support, so act that way.

As for your items, you should consider: Doran's Ring, Haunting Guise, Void Staff, Sorcerer's Shoes/Mercury Treads, Banshee's Veil, and Zhonya's Hourglass. Again, all these items are situational. To go in-depth:
Meki Pendant allows you to go right into Tear. HOWEVER, Doran's Ring has similar mana regen, with health (Lux has 4 HP bars) and AP. Meki is a riskier choice,
Magic Penetration is necessary for casters. Sorc's are good for early damage. If CC is ruining your day, Merc's is good too. Ionian's CDR is enviable, so be sure to check if the other team is stacking MR. If they're stacking tons, go for...
Void Staff. 40% MR bypass. Nice.
Haunting Guise is also a good early MP/AP/HP item, with the cost that it's middle-tier unupgradable.
Banshee's Veil and Zhonya's Hourglass are great survivability items. So is getting an early Catalyst.
You should rush the Deathcap if you're farming well, get a Soulstealer if you're being fed (duh).

http://www.leagueoflegends.com/board...d.php?t=146420 Bottom line- Perserverence is a silly mastery.
The usual masteries are a standard 9-0-21. I don't know why you would give up 15% MP. Strength of Spirit is also silly. You're not tanking. If you're taking the damage where the regen is useful, you'd already be dead. Lux is squishy (duh).

More maybe later. This was a lot longer than intended. By the way, pub-stomping doesn't mean your build is awesome.

@TheAsphodel: I tell people exactly what to get if they wish to follow this guide, that is the reason for the caps and such. I agree with your build, but remember that we might have different playing styles. And fear not, I do know she is support, and I support as much as possible. That is the reason why I have so much mana and mana regen as well. The HP regen I like because I do not have to go back all the time in teamfights. Being a support class requires you to be with the team at all times during fights, and the regen I have helps out a lot.

If you wish, and I would like to, we could try a ranked together where I go lux one game, and you play with her the next game. Not that I wish to show you that I am better, noooo... I like to see different strategies with Lux, strategies that work. I am sure I got things to learn from you, and I am sure you will find something of use from my Lux as well. [Again do not, take this as some sort of... "let us play together so I can show you that I am better" sort of request.]
