Tier list of champs that can be played top lane effectively.
I am an avid League of Legends player, and when it comes down to competitive/rank games, I specialize in top lane champions. I made this tier list for people who have a liking for top lane, and would like to find out which top lane champions are viable.
Just because I'm a selfish *******, I'm not going to post my counter list that I have amassed so far, but feel free to discuss the champions!

NOTE:
- Obviously, many mid champs can also go top depending on matchup and team comp, as well as ranged AD carries to counter specific melee champs, but these are what you will see in a standard setup of solo rank queue.

- Some champions are definitely better for jungling in most cases (such as warwick and trundle) but they are included in the tier list because they can sometimes be extremely effective against certain top champs, and thus are situationally viable.

- Tier ranks reflect only the top lane dominance; it does NOT factor in how effective they are for their team as a champion.
Ex: Garen/Shen has strong top lane dominance against many champs, but isn't a good champ for teamplay.

Tier 1:
- Champions in this category display the most dominance when matched against numerous opponents.
- Tier 1 has the least amount of weaknesses, least amount of counters, and either has incredible sustain or incredible harass.
- Tier 1 champions MUST be respected when playing against (unless they have some obvious early level weaknesses for your champion to capitalize on)

Yorick, Rumble, Renekton, Irelia, Udyr, Akali, Nidalee, Singed, Gangplank, Cho'Gath, Galio

Tier 1.5:
- Champions in this category are almost as strong as tier 1 champions, but they have a few obvious weaknesses that can be exploited by the opponent.
- Tier 1.5 has a couple of critical weaknesses, a number of counters, but still has great sustain or great harass.
- Tier 1.5 champions are generally here to survive early game so they can be a monster starting from mid game onwards.

Riven, Talon, Wukong, Malphite, Garen, Shen, Nasus, Lee Sin, Jax

Tier 2:
- These champions are generally case-specific choices and are usually not seen up top.
Do not totally look down on these champs however; they can still be devastating if your opponent chose it to counter your godlike tier 1 champ.
- Tier 2 champions have a lot of weaknesses, many counters from tier 1/1.5, and mediocre sustain/harass.
- In most cases, these champs are used to counter specific tier 1/1.5 champions.

Shyvana, Skarner, Trundle, Warwick, Tryndamere, Teemo, Jarvan, Olaf

Tier 3:
- Although we haven't quite reached the garbage pile of top lane champions, any champion in this category is hardly top lane viable, even though their most optimal lane is top.

Morde, Sivir, Dr. Mundo

Tier 4:
- Garbage pile
- Basically any champion that should never be up top soloing (Master Yi, Rammus, Amumu, Eve, etc)

Tier 0:
- This is a special tier for champions that can handle 1v2 (at least much better than any other champs).
- What can happen in competitive games is that, sometimes, when a team with a top laner that can handle 1v2 goes against a team with a top laner that definitely cannot handle 1v2, they might switch up the top and bottom. In other words, the top champion goes bot to face the ad carry + support, and the bot ad carry + support goes top where they will face a top laner that cannot handle 1v2.
- Tier 0 champions can handle light harass while still being able to farm a decent amount.

Yorick, Cho'Gath, Udyr, Galio, Shen, Warwick

EDIT: Moved Skarner down, Lee Sin up, Jarvan up

Garen has no sustain other then his passive which isn't hard to stop.

Irelia is top tier.
