You need Smite so you can prevent this happening:

If you somehow think this is less important than having exhaust or whatever for ganking with, then be my guest, but expect to be raged at for letting buffs/dragon/baron get stole. And it WILL be 100% your fault.

And there's always the chance your blue/red is smite stolen from under your nose early game too, which will put you behind. All because you insisted you didn't need it.

It's important for 2 reasons. It increases your jungle speed, and makes stealing buffs highly unlikely. A lot of people complain it doesnt scale into lategame and becomes useless but stealing buffs like baron or securing your dragon kill isn't really possible with just auto attacks. Smite is right.

Smite isn't necessary for certain junglers, if you only consider clear-time, health, etc.

If you consider the possibility of having your buffs stolen, securing dragon/baron, etc. then smite is absolutely necessary on every jungler ever and if you don't take it you're an idiot.

Smite is required mostly for the threat of having Smite.

What do I mean? Well, if you have Smite...

The enemy can't guarantee their own buffs - it's possible (and even easy) for you to ward a buff and Smite steal it over the wall if they arn't careful.

The enemy jungler can't safely solo/duo Dragon without being prepared for a teamfight. Since you could just run over and Smite it and high-tail it out. Even if you get killed, a death for Dragon is worthwhile in terms of team gold*.

The enemy has to be careful while engaging Baron. Same as Dragon, if they let you get too close at the wrong time, YOINK! Even worse, in addition to Baron's buff, killing him is the equivalent of 5 champion kills**.

Further, all these go double if you don't have Smite but the enemy does! It's much, much easier to Smite steal a mob when you know the enemy won't be Smiting it themselves.

Smite isn't required for sustained jungling. Smite is required for Counter-Jungling and Counter-Counter jungling. By not taking Smite, you've much more vulnerable to counter jungling (having buffs and neutral mobs stolen) and have much fewer options for counter jungling of your own.

* You lose out on XP & gold from minions for a while, but the gold Dragon gives is worth just over 3 kills**
** Ignoring kill/death streaks.
