As some of you may have noticed in champion sales announcements, for a few weeks I was posting the history of champion sales updated. I've decided to simply put the information into a seperate topic and just update it each week and reference the information in the announcement for those who are interested in the information. I've also decided to share what information I do know about champion sales and address common statements/questions I've seen in the sales topics as well.

Frequently Asked Questions/MythBusting

What are the prices for RP sales?
RP prices are 50% reduced, with remainders rounded down. Relative to the RP price tiers, this means:
975 RP = 487 RP sale
585 RP = 292 RP sale
260 RP = 130 RP sale

When are they announcing this week's champion sales?
Recently, there are both weekly and weekend champion sales. The weekly sales are usually announced on Mondays, with weekend sales usually announced on Wednesdays or Thursdays prior to the sale. They have also recently been combined into a single announcement with the weekly and weekend skin sales.

They say the champion's on sale but it's regular price in the store!
Surprised at how often comes up, given that the answer to why is given right in the announcement post. While champion sales are *announced* on wednesday, they don't begin until friday. The sales continue through the weekend and end on Monday.

Why isn't the IP price reduced?
Champion sales have never been an IP sale, only RP sales. While many people have lobbied for IP sales, the fact is from the very start, they were never intended as IP sales. When Riot first inquired to the community to gauge interest in this topic: http://www.leagueoflegends.com/board...ad.php?t=76929 they made the intention clear. The overwhelming response was that either people wanted RP sales, or even if they didn't, they didn't mind them being on sale. As such they started these as initially just promotional sales.

I just bought X champion on sale for full price this week. No fair!
Always, always, always wait until wednesday to see which sales are happening for the week. Twice now I've been in the position of almost buying a champion on monday and decided to wait, only to find them on sale that weekend. It's definitely worth waiting a few days to see, even if the RP is burning a hole in your pocket. You *may* be able to catch a break through submitting a support ticket if you did make a poorly planned purchase, but those are handled on a case-by-case basis so it's usually best to err on the side of prudence.

OMG So stupid. They put free Tristana/Alistar on sale!
From what I've seen, it seems the only current negating factor for regular champion sales is that they seem to no longer offer 260RP (450IP) champions on sales anymore. While yes, it seems silly to most of us that Tristana or Alistar would be on sale when you can get them "for free", it seems that champions available through promotional means are not excluded from potential sales. You also have to remember that promotional champion releases- while we usually think of the ones easiest to obtain- include champions given away with skins for special promotions (some live, some digital), such as Pantheon, Cho'gath, Caitlyn, Corki, Rammus, Twited Fate, Jax, Singed, and Nasus. While we think of the ones we can point and click with little effort, we have to remember that they are just as equally a promotional offer as the ones you'd have to fly to an expo for.

Why isn't X or Y champion on sale?
This question is a bit trickier as the full details of how champion sales are selected isn't entirely known. There are however some trends that they follow that you can use to gauge if your desired champion won't be on sale for a while.

What are "Bundle Sales"?
Done previously before champion sales became regular and weekly, these sales were special promotional sales in which both a champion and their skins would go on sale at the same time. Additionally, a special bundle would be added during the sale letting you buy the champion and the skins all at once, usually for more of a discount. The bundle sales were revived for the month of August 2011 as a special promotional effort, with one bundle offered each week of the month.

Trends
After looking very closely at sale data from every angle, there is no definitive answer to how champion sale selection works, as there are no true recurring patterns, and our insight probably won't change unless someone from Riot gives us direct information. However, there are general trends that can be found, that can help you determine the best opportunities.

Newer Champs
As a general trend, champions will not go on sale until around 5 months after their release. They also tend to do release champion sales in order, so I wouldn't expect to see for example Leona on sale before Rumble and Orianna get sales first.

After Champions Go On Sale
As a general rule, do not expect champions to go on sale for a while after they go on sale. So far, there have been exceptions (the shortest time between sales was Ziggs in April/May 2012... having two sales only 11 days apart), but often, even 14-16 weeks is considered short or more standard. So as a general rule, if your champion has been on sale sometime in the past 3-4 months, there's a good bet they won't be on the upcoming week's. A safe bet would be to hold them to the same standard as new releases: look at ~ 5 months (20 weeks) before you start expecting a sale again. Remember however, this is just a trend, there could be an earlier sale than usual or your champion could go 8-9 months without a sale.

450 IP Champions
While these have been done in the past for sales (Sivir and Master Yi), they were single champion sales or promotional bundle sales. Since the regular rotation of champion sales, 260 RP champions have not appeared in regular weekly sales.
Update: This may not be fully reliable. While they still are very very rarely seen, during the Great Hunt themed sales, Poppy was placed on sale. Additionally they seem to be included in special RP sales for Legacy Skin retirements.

Mythbusting

Champion is on sale, incoming nerfs!
This one is often a joke more than anything, but some people legitimately question it. Through looking at the sales and the patch information I can tell you that there is no direct correlation between champion sales and nerfs: several times I ran across champions who were not touched in the patches either preceding or following their sale, and some that even had buffs around the time of their sale.

Champion X is Free this week. Not going to be in the sale.
While it's rare that champion sales coincide with the week a champion is free, it has happened in 6 instances: Morgana (Season One: Week 35), Tristana (Season One: Week 39), Lee Sin (Season One: Week 60), Rumble (Season Two Preseason: Week 2) and Vayne and Shen (Season Two Preseason: Week 3). As the last is still fairly recent, it is enough proof to debunk that even now, champions do *occasionally* go on sale the same week they're free.

OMG, They will never put three 6300IP champs on sale at once!
As we don't fully know the method of selection, it's conjecture to assume this. As of right now, there are 28 out of 83 champions in the 6300IP tier. While they may make up the largest tier, it's also fair to assume that only getting 1-2 per week sale matches fairly close with the ratio of statistical probability. It's also unlikely that Riot would deliberately withhold them, as they have had on more than one occasion sales where all 3 champions cost 975 RP, and since these are RP sales, it's the same reduction in overhead if you look at it from a business standpoint.

This is a really great resource, thanks Eat Orange Be K!

I took a few minutes to write a little script to smush Eat Orange Be K's data and apply his rules to it to produce the leading sales candidates. This list isn't 100% correct because of some inconsistencies introduced by the package sales and skipped weeks until March (I'm very lazy and didn't want to analyze dates). However, anything after March 2011 is close.

Holiday "Very Likely" Sales Candidates:

  • Maokai
  • Heimerdinger
  • LeBlanc
  • Gangplank

Like in the Harrowing, it is expected that the champions that have custom skins will go on sale during the Snowdown Showdown. If you can wait two weeks for these champions to likely go on sale it is recommended you do so.

Sale Candidates:

36 weeks: Evelynn
29 weeks: Amumu
28 weeks: Katarina, Karma
27 weeks: Nasus, Twitch
25 weeks: XinZhao
24 weeks: Malphite, Maokai
23 weeks: MissFortune
22 weeks: Tristana, Udyr, Trundle
21 weeks: Ezreal, JarvanIV
20 weeks: Gangplank, Mordekaiser, Olaf
19 weeks: Malzahar, Heimerdinger, Alistar
18 weeks: Shaco, Kennen
17 weeks: Tryndamere, Swain, Jax
16 weeks: LeeSin, Veigar, Singed
15 weeks: Brand
14 weeks: Galio, Garen, Lux
13 weeks: Warwick, Kog'Maw, Akali
12 weeks: Rumble, TwistedFate, Teemo
11 weeks: Janna, Shen
10 weeks: Orianna, Urgot, Irelia
9 weeks: Yorick, Caitlyn, Zilean
8 weeks: Fiddlesticks, Sion, Karthus, Vladmir, Nocturne, Nidalee, Blitzcrank

Sale to Weeks Comparisons:

Dec. 23-26, 2011: Graves - Not on sale previously, Pantheon - 26 weeks prior, Kassadin - 27 weeks prior
Dec 16-19, 2011: Xerath - Not on sale previously, Taric - 20 weeks prior, Vayne - 10 weeks prior
Dec. 9-12, 2011: Renekton - 27 weeks prior, Sona - 23 weeks prior, Riven - Not on sale previously
Dec. 2-4, 2011: Talon - Not on sale previously, Cho'gath - 16 weeks prior, Anivia - 23 weeks prior
Nov 18-21, 2011: Leona - Not on sale previously, Morgana - 19 weeks prior, Rammus - 23 weeks prior
Nov. 11-14, 2011: Wukong - Not on sale previously, LeBlanc - 26 weeks prior, DrMundo - 23 weeks prior
Nov. 4-7, 2011: Skarner - Not on sale previously, Cassiopeia - 24 weeks prior, Gragas - 28 weeks prior
Oct. 25-31, 2011: Fiddlesticks - 9 weeks prior, Sion - 7 weeks prior, Karthus - 15 weeks prior, Vladmir - 10 weeks prior
Oct. 21-24, 2011: Yorick - Not on sale previously, Caitlyn - 21 weeks prior, Zilean - 23 weeks prior
Oct. 14-17, 2011: Orianna - Not on sale previously, Urgot - 35 weeks prior, Irelia - 23 weeks prior
Oct. 7-10, 2011: Vayne - Not on sale previously, Janna - 19 weeks prior, Shen - 20 weeks prior
Sept. 30-Oct. 3, 2011: Rumble - Not on sale previously, TwistedFate - 18 weeks prior, Teemo - 19 weeks prior
Sept. 23-26, 2011: Warwick - 20 weeks prior, Kog'Maw - 19 weeks prior, Akali - 33 weeks prior
Sept. 16-19, 2011: Galio - Not on sale previously, Garen - 31 weeks prior, Lux - 20 weeks prior
Sept. 9-12, 2011: Blitzcrank - 26 weeks prior, Brand - Not on sale previously, Sion - 18 weeks prior
Sept. 2-5, 2011: LeeSin - Not on sale previously, Veigar - 18 weeks prior, Singed - 19 weeks prior
Aug. 26-29, 2011: Tryndamere - 17 weeks prior, Swain - 20 weeks prior, Jax - 18 weeks prior
Aug. 19-22, 2011: Shaco - 26 weeks prior, Nocturne - Not on sale previously, Vladmir - 18 weeks prior
Aug. 12-15, 2011: Malzahar - 18 weeks prior, Heimerdinger - 20 weeks prior, Cho'gath - 20 weeks prior

Current issues with list:
- Week count is still possibly incorrect because of bundle sales.
- Uncertain where to put Corki.
- Harrowing Sale was added to the top, but not the sales to weeks comparison.
- There's a bug in my script that's no longer removing new champions when they go on sale so I've been having to do that by hand.
- Thanksgiving Black Friday sale screws everything up. For now I'm simply continuing as if it never happened.
- 75% sales are new and may imply new rules to champions that are featured in them.

Nice FAQ. You should see about asking the writer here -- http://na.leagueoflegends.com/board/...d.php?t=677921 -- to add a link to your topic for it.

Teirdome, that list is badass too. +1!

Nice use of the info! The only thing I'll point out is that you should add Corki to the "potentials", so far he's the only non-450IP champ to never go on sale

I predicted Rumble this weekend. My next prediction is Vayne the next week. The past few newer champs have gone on sale 5 months after their release.
