AP Cho'gath

So you looked at Cho'gath's awsome AP ratios and thought why not go all in on this? Here is a guide to doing just that.

Masteries:
This depends on what kind of Cho'gath you wish to play brust or carry
Brust is 21/0/9
Taking all the masteries that give mana and AP
Carry is 9/0/21
Taking all the masteries that give sustain

Try both out to see which you like

Runes:
Surviving till you get your ultimate and first item are the most important thing for the carry
Prioritize:
Magic pen, Health, Armor, Magic Resist
Secondary:
AP, Cool Downs, Movement speed
having that huge brust early game to force the opponet back or get a kill is kinda the ideal for the brust
Prioritize:
AP, Magic Pen, Movement Speed
Secondary:
Health, Armor, Magic Resist, Cool Downs

Item build:
Again depends on which sort of mage you wish to play: brust or carry
Brust:
Ability tome and pot > Lucky Pick and boots > boots 2 and Death Cap > Upgrade Pick
then pick up any of the following:
Abys, Rylias, WoTA, Void Staff, Hourglass
I recommend Void Staff as fourth item as it melts down the magic resist of enemy champions equal magic pen boots by the time they hit 50 magic resist and only get better from there.
Carry:
Mana and two pots (or if you can manage, a ward) > cat and boots1 > RoA and boots2> Death Cap
The pick up any of the following:
Abys, Rylias, WoTA, Void Staff, Hourglass
Void Staff as fourth item

Skill Order:
R>W>E>Q
Pick up Q first. It is extremely good cc with a harsh slow that does not improve as you level it up. Only the damage improves while leveling up.
Pick up W or E second. E if you are having trouble farming. W if you can farm alright.
Then follow skill order R>W>E>Q
We want W maxed as that will give a long time silence on the enemy, which prevents them from running away.

Laning:
Pick mid or solo top. Focus on farming and only harrass when you can land your full combo on the enemy. At level six, brust can try for a kill using the full Cho'gath combo, Q>W>AA>R to brust the enemy down.
Follow the item pathing and be patient. Cho'gath has some long cool downs that must be taken into consideraion before using any of them. Only use them if you feel you will have them up for a fight.

Side note:
Your Q is your escape/chase skill. It will also break up a surpression if landed on the enemy's location. Example: Warwick comes into gank and you know you cannot escape him. You plant a rupture under your location as he pops his ult on you. The knockup from your ult will stop the surpression and you can escape at that point.

Now you choose to play Cho'gath as AP tanky. Congrats you have choosen the most popular build for this champion. This build takes advantage of three things:
Cho'gath's AP ratios
His ability to stack health
His secondary passive (the Cho'gath Taunt)

To explain the secondary passive, remember that the more feast stacks cho'gath recieves the bigger he grows. This also increases his hit box. When an enemy uses a skill shot and wants to hit the carry, too bad, he going to hit cho'gath because of the size of his hit box. Smart cast gets around this, however there are not as many smart cast hard cc as there are skill shot hard cc.

Masteries:
9/21/0
He needs the AP offense and alot of defense. The last talent works wonders with his build: Juggernut. (extra health and reduce incoming cc by 10%)

Runes:
Go with surviviblity over offense: Cho'gath is incredibily weak to range or quick moving targets like Kait, early game. Cho'gath needs to be able to survive this early harrass and farm to get the necessary items to kill them later. Give flesh to break bones is the idea behind this Cho'gath build

Item build:
Unless you have to do something else, run mana crystal and either two pots or a ward. Other starting items could be boots or regen pendant (for a force of nature rush or a phil stone if under farmed).
So it should run something like this:
mana crystal> Cat protector and boots> RoA and boots 2> Glacial shield>
Then build counter to what the enemy team is
Mainly physical
Finish frozen heart and grab hourglass
Mainly magic
Abys
Balanced, pick the fed champion and build counter
other good items
WotA, Rylias, Deathcap

Skill order:
R>W>E>Q
Pick one point in Q to start and hold it. Then follow the rule R>W>E>Q. The only exception is second skill point, pick depending on how well your laning phase is going and how well you can farm without your E.

Laning:
Cho'gath has to go solo top. He cannot support bot with a dual team because of his natural ability to push from all three of his AOE spells. That means he can really easily starve his partner in lane. A starved parnter means a 4v5 which means game over.
Farm and harrass when you can with your Q. Save enough mana to use your Q in an emergency if the jungler comes for a gank. Survive and keep farming until you are forced back or team fights start breaking out. Buy items then start pushing lanes and intiating team fights. Your Q>W combo will incapacitate most teams even Gangplank if you time it right (he removes scurvy to get rid of the slow but you silence him afterwards). Done correctly your team can net a kill real quick. Use your ultimate only to grow big and to weaken champions. Only use it to get kills if you are: securing a kill, fighitng 1v1, if you can flash feast the enemy and then escape.

So you decided that thanks to Cho'gath's rad passive that you will jungle?
Well, you will have to wait a bit. I need to revamp my old technique for jungling with cho'gath to better match the new jungle.

Nice guides. Very informative. The format could use some cleaning up, but the information is sound.

I notice you don't actually list Force of Nature as an item against Magic-based teams. It's quite good with Cho's large HP pool.

I'm also not sure about Rylai's. It's slow synergizes amazingly with Vorpal Spikes, but building health beyond RoA on Cho is a poor choice due to his built-in HP steroid.

What other summoner spell would you suggest to pair up with flash?

Exhaust is a good combo if you need to do some damage first and is another slow to use in ganks.

Also how is this for a jungle'Gath build? start with potions and boots, get recurve, cata into RoA, finish wits end and treads, glacial next, deathcap, void staff, frozen heart. with 9/21/0 masteries AS, flat armor, Mres per lvl, and Mpen runes?

Tanky with sustaind damage (wits end and spikes) and decent burst ( deathcap and void staff)
