Magic Penetration vs Ability Power runes?

Greater Quintessence of the Piercing Present give +1.89 Magic Penetration.

Greater Quintessence of Potency gives +4.95 Ability Power.

What would the difference be to a mage - say Morgana?

Ability Power gives you flat damage, depending on AP ratio for amount.

Magic Pen makes your spells do more damage via negating enemy resistance.


Magic Pen is generally the better stat, but there needs to be a balance.

AP for early game dominance. Pen runes, for mid-end game MR reduction.

I go with Mpen, because a lot (if not most people) have mres runes, so this will counter-act them. And if they dont, you'll still be reducing their base which is low and causes your spells to do a lot.

Pen Reds and and AP Quints IMO

The reds give you that early game oomph you need [coupled with Sorc shoes] and lategame as a caster you should have a Void Staff anyways so yeah, your pen runes go to the backseat

well i dont play morgana however i hear that she has high base damage on her abilities, however they dont stack too well with AP, so that 4.95 ap might give one or 2 more dmg while the magic pen will decrease the % of damage reduction that your enemies increasing it by more than 1 or 2% so i would recomend the magic pen on someone like morg

I'm pretty sure the AP quints are better. Magic pen marks + sorc shoes = 30 magic pen, which gives you true damage to anybody not getting extra magic resist. So basically, the magic pen quints would be wasted here

Specifically for Morgana, I would go AP quints.

Why? I generally build Sorcerer's Boots and Abyssal scepter. With MR reduction from Abyssal and Tormented Soil you can already reduce 28~ 60. That plus 20 flat MR pen from your boots nullifies well over 60 MR. I build Morgana tanky and even I only get 74 MR. So you'll already be dealing near if not true damage to non-tanks/bruisers.

This means Mpen quints won't be that useful, since you're already have your opponents at like 1 MR or negative MR meaning your quints become nullified.
