Is there a "lore" department within Riot anymore?

This is a serious question:

Given how Jinx's story is currently being told, not through "blocks of text" but through music videos, voiced lines and "hacked web pages," is there even a department that handles actual lore anymore at Riot?

I mean, there are still gaping holes in the overall lore, such as:

  • Does Singed's past still jive with Warwick's rewrite?
  • How in the blue hell did Lokfar suddenly become a peninsula of the Freljord?
  • How does the Lissandra not expose herself as the "Ice Queen" every time she's summoned?
  • After the Twisted Treeline rework, where is Maokai's place of origin?
  • What lies south of the Great Barrier?
  • Is there a still need for the Institute of War/League of Legends now that territorial disputes are being settled through actual war?
And many, many others.

And so I ask: Is there still a department at Riot that handles this stuff or are we doomed to an overall story that will never make sense just because?

I am not Riot so I can't answer all the questions but

She is only "The Ice Witch" in the League of Legends. Her mind is opened up to the summoners, but only to control her actions. The summoners know she is the Ice Witch, but they don't know she is Lissandra.

I guess I can buy that, but it doesn't diminish my overall point: Riot hasn't done anything to tidy up these plot holes in their background, creating new ones instead.

Take a look at Sivir's new lore. Instead of a curse of a Freljord diplomat for tattling, Cassiopeia was now cursed by the occupants of some random temple she and Sivir were hunting for.

All that the noblewoman required was an experienced tomb robber as an escort.

The expedition proved to be more than Sivir and Cassiopeia bargained for. The ancient tomb held neither the treasure Cassiopeia had promised, nor the weapon she coveted. Despite Sivir's warnings, the Noxian flung open the door to the entombed vault, setting events in motion that would change not just Sivir's life, but all of Shurima forever.
So, this new story, possibly how Riot explains Renekton's entry onto Valoran given some of Sivir's champion specific voice overs) was created because it sounded cool, background story be damned?

Simply put, is there anyone at Riot keeping track of this stuff or are we doomed to "Let's do it because it sounds good and screw what said in the past?"

If we can shut up and give them time, maybe the plot holes will be filled.

Season 4 is looking up to be awesome, though. So much missing info is bound to be revealed.

That's assuming a lot, such as there is a Lore/creative writing team still employed or that Riot cares to fill the holes.

For example, Riot has had an entire year to explain Maokai's origin or Evelynn's role in the Shadow Isles. Result of "giving them time?" Bupkiss.

And "shutting up" is precisely the wrong thing to do. Squeaky wheel gets the grease, after all.

It seems like they slowly incorporate things but they do what they want to do or are inclined to do. There are a lot of champions and if you ever talked to some Rioters they will tell you they are always busy. If not now, eventually they get around to something even if it takes a long time. They just now started to create a more cohesive lore.

Plus the Shadow Isle champions are meant to be mysterious and without origin anyway. They're probably the last champions to really be explained lol.

So I think it's safe to say there really isn't a lore department anymore just by looking at this thread: http://forums.na.leagueoflegends.com...75129#42175129

This is the current problem with the lore; it's being led by artists not writers.

I'm not seeing any examples of that, however. If effort is being made to create a cohesive overall lore, one does not do it piecemeal like this. It would be nice to hear an answer from Riot about this, even if that answer is "we don't think lore really matters to our players."

Evelynn was completely forgotten. Kitae, when she was still posting, said on a Reddit AMA that Evelynn would be a "major player" in the Shadow Isles story... That was a year ago, and nothing has been announced or hinted at. Same with fixing Maokai's now botched origins.

I'm just not seeing any effort at all towards a cohesive story.

As far as I can tell, all lore is used for is as a tool to generate hype and then it is immediately forgotten. Like 6 champions got moved to Freljord to participate in an event that technically started over 3 years ago. This proceeded to ended with "oh btw Ashe wins" and as far as we can tell everyone else just slunk back home to watch TV.

Regardless of whatever Riot says about their FUTURE plans that they seem to have in abundance up their sleeves, lore is dead.

?
1. Singed is mentioned in Warwick's lore as being a friend of his (and the one who made his transformation potion). Warwick is no longer his teacher.
2. Retcon. As of the Freljord patch, it's always been a part of Freljord.
3. Not sure about this. It could be that her identity has already been revealed and this is her attempt to gain power over Freljord.
4. Still the Twisted Treeline.
5. Not a gaping hole, just a question you want answered.
6. Who's warring? The Freljord tribes? They aren't considered independent nations and can't make use of the League's influence. Noxus and Demacia were prevented from waring over Kalamanda by the League. It still has a purpose.
