What specials are physical attacks? I would assume most fighter classes attacks are physical, as well as most assassin attacks (rakes, stabs, assassinates). But the guide suggests that most special attacks are magical, even things you would expect to be physical.
Is there any possibility we could get notation on the character guides or something else?

Most skills are magic damage. Exceptions are skills such as Ezreal's, where it specifically says Physical damage. Otherwise, assume it's magic.

I think skills that say physical are physical damage in general.

Aside from that, the other ones that do physical damage are ones that do attack damage + x, and a 3rd class is "on next attack" abilities.

Examples:

Ashe's Volley does attack damage + X physical damage.
Blitz's knockup does extra physical damage on next attack, similarly, so does nidalee's takedown cougar form ability.

that's just a general hunch tbh.

Q: What counts as a magical attack and what counts as a physical attack?

A: The general rule of thumb is that auto-attacks (where you right-click an enemy) are physical and spells (cast with Q,W,E,R) are magical. However, there are exceptions to this rule. In the case of Ashe's Frost Arrow it still appears to deal physical damage, but the slowing affect is magical. This is why if you have Morgana's Black Shield on (blocks magical damage) you still take damage from the attack, but you do not get slowed. Another notable exception is Gangplank's Parley, which can both be dodged (can only happen with physical attacks) but can also be absorbed by Morgana's Black Shield.
