All of them are fully viable for general pvp, each one good in different roles.
Warwick-Jungler/Tanky DPS
Veigar- Squishy Caster Nuke
Master Yi- Melee DPS
Kayle- Support DPS? (unsure)
Kog'maw- Ranged DPS/AP DPS
Ashe- Ranged DPS support
Zilean- Mage support

I recommend mobafire.com for guides, or just the sticky on the top of the guide section.

I recommend leaguecraft.com for guides. Generally speaking, the good ones there are usually better than the mobafire ones. At least, that's my experience with them. There's valuable stuff on both sites, as well as this site. You have to dig around if you want to find great stuff worth knowing.

WW, ashe and zilean are game changing and all fulfill separate roles so you should learn them better. The others are reliant on snowballing to be useful.

You should narrow your focus. Pick a tank, an AD, an AP and a support. Learn them as best you can. As long as you have a solid champ in each field, you can start playing what the team needs. This will leave you free to experiment in the champ types you enjoy--most of the time.

Mobafire and SoloMid have some nice guides, depending on the champs. You can find guides on the forums, but some are antiquated and others are meant for specific purposes. A ranked 5v5 guide may not be applicable to a normal random match.

Tried to find the best guide for each, didn't work for Master Yi -- I don't play him and most mobafire guide's don't look great. If you see a great Master Yi player in pub, look at what they use and try and learn the playstyle.

Warwick (http://www.solomid.net/guides.php?g=1562)
Veigar (http://www.solomid.net/guides.php?g=1589)
KogMaw (http://www.solomid.net/guides.php?g=104)
Kayle (http://www.solomid.net/guides.php?g=806)
*Ashe (http://www.solomid.net/guides.php?g=633)
Zilean (http://www.solomid.net/guides.php?g=167)

The Ashe build is probably the best one, I'd start with that first lol. Also, check out Photonman41 on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/user/photonman41#p/u/2/zIbDa4hcIQs), he has a lot of "Let's Play ____" videos for a lot of champions; there is an Ashe and Zilean. Most importantly he has Master Yi gameplay since the guide's all seem kind've troll. Watch them and get a feel for how the character's manuever, what it's supposed to look like when you double-bomb or ult with Zilean, or ulting with Ashe.

Also, look at the replays from Dreamhack (http://season-one-championship.na.leagueoflegends.com/). TheOddOne played a great WW in Team SoloMid vs. Epik Gaming (Day 3), as did Dan Dinh in the Epik Gaming vs. aAa (Day 1). Ashe was another common pick in the tournament. Might as well learn from the best.

EDIT: Please practice in Co-OP AI doing skill combos etc.; play on Beginner difficulty until you can basically own the whole bot team, and then move on to Intermediate. It really sucks when people try out their champs for the first time in pubs or ranked ...

EDIT: Forgot to mention runes, but someone else basically addressed it implicitly.

Since you have so many different roles to fill, I would think that utility runes would be best for you because if you build up a page for playing AD you won't have enough to build a page for AP until awhile later. So, I suggest getting utility runes just to make it apply to all the characters (you could always follow the guides, but then you wouldn't be playing the champions in rotation). Something like Marks of Desolation x9, Glyphs of Focus x9, Quintessence of Fortitude x1, and Quintessence of Swiftness x2. For Seals they are 205 each so you can grab a set of Warding x9 and Resilience x9 and alternate between champions, e.g. Warwick would want flat armor for easy jungling and early survivability, Zilean might want magic resist because he is far enough back that he won't be hit by melee, it's more likely to be a ranged spell from MF or something.

Generally I'd go armor for jungling WW / Yi and magic resist for anytime you're laning.

Starting out though, learn each character one at a time like this guy said. You'll be used to the role more.
