The April fools joke:
a controversial hero,
that did not fool most.

There were believers
that Riot Games went insane.
I would not doubt it.

"A sea cow will fight!"
Cried all the developers.
Suddenly, a skin.

Warwick did the deed.
The manatee is now dead.
Everyone is sad.

Alas, everything
went better than expected.
Fifty RP? Sold!

Riot Staff, over 500 posts have been wrote, and more words have been shouted at monitors since Urf the Manatee was struck down in Summoners Rift, but none of them were really adequate. Posts never are in the face of senseless tragedy.

Words cannot describe how the summoners felt when they lost their manatee. Not until the ocean of disbelief was filled with the waters of comprehension did any of us realize how much we identified ourselves, even apart from personal friendship, with the guardian-- this fish-wielding, spatula-flipping, manatee-- and he would have been that if he were released-- expressing the very essence of the determination of our land. It seems of little consequence now that there were political differences, or objections to this or that legislative product, though as far as I am concerned there was a very large measure of agreement. What matters is that feeling of loss -- that personal sense of emptiness -- that all Summoners feel because their hero was cut off in the prime of life. As a league, we have lost a hero who understood the institution of war, gloried in its overwhelming responsibilities, and discharged his duties with dash and joy, which were an inspiration to the determination of our nation.

But Urf the Manatee was more than that. He was a manatee filled with the joy of living. He was a prodigy, a warrior-- and my friend.

For myself, I remember coming to the League the same day he did last year. We were sworn in together on the same April day in 2009. The sketch on my dorm wall shows that we two, returning DotAers, looked a little uncomfortable at the moment in our new land. It shows us looking at the release notes, and it recalls the first patch we witnessed together when we called on the Institute of War of 2009, which we had organized, to back this patch. It was the beginning of an association which extended throughout the year in the League and Insitute. We collaborated in many bipartisan matters, as is not unusual in Valoran. Indeed, in our service together in the Battlefield Administration, we worked closely -- as did Averdrian and others -- on the Jax-weapons bill, the Restricted Weaponry Act, and other similar measures which were major aspects of Urf the Manatee's Warrior career.

I am a personal witness to the fact that he was resourceful, optimistic, and creative. He became and was my friend, and this is a deep source of gratification to me and the rest of the league.

The Spider Queen, too, knew Urf well and admired him greatly. She will, I know, always think of the manatee's graciousness and the warmth of personal friendship which he exuded.

Only a week before his tragic passing, I saw him in the River by the Rift when he accepted the report of the location of Jax, in which I joined, and issued a statement offering encouragement and help.

He was vigorous and healthy and smiling and friendly -- a complete champion, concerned about other heroes who were no longer as vigorous and not quite as healthy as they used to be.

This concern for the unfortunate by a many with all of the social graces and all the social status and as much power as Valoran allows one man was what made him so much the symbol of the youth of our country.

These are well-meaning, deeply sincere tokens -- necessary, but still tokens. In reality it will be Urf's youthful freshness in his aspirations for our league that will keep his memory fresh.

In a real sense we, his former summoner in the League, are the only ones with the power to write words which can transform these aspirations into memorials with meaning. We can write many posts, like a meaningful anti-jungling law, which would consecrate and perpetuate Urf's love for ocean and national dignity. We can exorcise from our rift-- and the Valoran people are doing that even now -- those extremes of hatred and disbelief in public affairs which create a climate in which terrible acts become much more likely.

Acts such as these will be his final memorials. It is within our power to establish them. Perhaps his noblest memorial is that he would have wanted such memorials almost as no others.
So, in common with my colleagues in this solemn service -- and that is what this is today -- I bespeak for all summoners -- and I would place their names in the Record, so that as they read this Record when they grow up, I hope they will read their names in it and see that their friend spoke with deep sympathy -- Udyr, Zileas, and Pendragon, and to urf's father and mother and his brothers and sisters and their families our deepest sympathy on this terrible bereavement, for our nation and for all mankind, and in the deep expectation that oceans will flow from his grave for the benefit of heroes.

URF (by Acoristo)

Urf, guardian and protector of the river.
A proud example was he.
Of all the League truly means:
Strength, Honor and Valiance.

Yet the call to arms was heard by more than one
as the beast called Warwick emerged from the overgrowth
his snout catching the manatee's scent
and the eyes watching him

With a dash, quick and expert, the werewolf laid his claim to him
but what the demon did not expect, was the witnesses.
Dragging the body along, he made his quick escape.

But all is not forgotten, no, just strengthened
as Urf's great legacy will endure for many years
As with any other race, when they cross path with their life's destiny
Only glory and honor awaits them in the next.

Urf, we shall miss you so
greatly that it is
hard to put it into words.
.
.

Gleaming of pride and hope,
Urf did not know what was coming.
You might think it was his fault
somehow, but even so he did not deserve this.

Cut down in his prime,
all he ever wanted was a
lone opportunity to face Jax.
Losing him has hurt us all.

Murderous Warwick must be brought to justice,
in spite of my once fondness for him.
All of you, join me in the hunt - it will only be fun if he runs!

The Rise and Fall of Urf the Manatee By Ronoh

I'll never forget that day, I was filled with glee
when I looked on the forums to see,
that Riot had announced a new champion for me,
and that my friends, was Urf the Manatee.

My mind reeled at this cow of the sea.
What would he do? How slow would he be?
Could he ever kill even a tiny, little Annie?
Truly, I didn't understand this Manatee.

Days past as the Urf fever died down,
We were busy with all the ninjas abound!
Riot then posted Urf's abilities, to world renown
Proving this Manatee wasn't about to drown.

With this preview that Riot bestowed,
we could join Urf's Big Blue Watery Road.
His Omnisplash was his ult, making enemies slowed.
The Gaze of Poseidon allowed Urf to roam.
Flop Strike was when I was about to explode.
“He will be OP! QQ is incoming!” I bellowed.
Flippy Floppy was where his true power was shown.

Urf looked up to Jax, in fact it was he,
Jax I mean, who inspired this sweet Manatee,
and his powerful Equipment Mastery.
Well Urf soon grabbed two weapons fierce, a fish of the sea
and a cook's spatula, both of which where the key,
to the power and viability of Urf the Manatee.

He could change weapons on the fly, even under Duress,
This adaptability was the mode of his success.
His spatula dealt instant damage to suppress,
which he could swap for a fish, used to oppress.
This strength of his was powerful, but I must confess;
I saw this all as simply Riot making a cruel jest.

April Fool's Day came and I waited patiently,
to see if Urf's place in the League was mean to be.
Refreshing the page, F5 over over again, watching TV,
Finally Riot posted their Troll Day decree:
“Urf the Manatee was savagely killed,
by the practice of dirty Alchemy.”

“NOOOOO!” I cried with tears in my eyes.
“How could Warwick kill a hero of that size!?”
My questions were left unanswered about Urf's demise.
I soon stopped my tears to read the forums,
where I saw Urf's eulogies and goodbyes.
“Beautiful” I said under my breathe, these outcries
brought a warm feeling into my heart and stopped my cries.
“Truly, we have the greatest community” I said,
as page after page became filled in this thread.
This April Fool's Day has been sad,
to lose a League member so rad,
but all wounds can be healed on the Pad.
So play today on the Fields of Justice,
and kick the ass of any Warwick among us!

I am late to the party but it's because of how hard I took the news. I can barely stand the loss.

When i had seen that you were coming,
I leaped with joy and started running,
to my computer i had ran,
I began gaining IP points for you
I played LoL the whole night through
When i had reached 6300,
some bad news was sent to me,
You had been killed by an evil fiend
your organs were eaten even your spleen
my throat swelled up,
my eyes drew tears,
your skin was used as a nice seal coat,
so i had to saved for noting but a joke.
