Advantages to AP:
You can get a slow on your abilities, snaring people into your ult and aoe slowing with Bouncing Blades
Your Shunpo does amazing single-target damage
You can get items like Void Staff or Abyssal Scepter to increase your damage output
Lichbane allows your AP to apply to your attack in its most common situation (Shunpo in on a target + single autoattack)
Items are much easier to buy incrementally, as they mostly require Blasting Wands, which are relatively cheap.
You can gain HP without sacrificing your damage output (Rylai's, maybe Rod of Ages)

Advantages to AD:
Your Bouncing Blades provides high AOE damage while your ult is on CD
Items are a lot more slot efficient. Each slot can give you up to 50 damage per dagger on your ult (Bloodthirster, or even 55 in the case of Sword of the Occult). Most of the AP items you will be building provide only 70-80 AP, which is 24-28 Ult damage (Lichbane, Rylai's, Void Staff). Even with a Zhonya's boosting this by 25%, you are only getting about 35 damage per dagger per slot, except for your Mejai's (63 Fully stacked, 78 with Zhonya's) and Zhonya's (52.5, makes each other item a bit more efficient).
Autoattack is more effective
Bloodthirsters provide Lifesteal to keep you from having to b

Currently, AD because KI stacks decently for it.

AD has some advantages and AP has some other advantages that wash out. But KI makes a difference. And, the builds are close in general.

Imo the biggest difference would be that an AD build can pick up armor in a hybrid item for late game (Atma), whereas an AP build can pick up magic resist in a hybrid item for lategame (Abyssal).

Edit:

AD also synergizes much better with team attack speed buffs -- see Sivir, Warwick, Nunu. One of the critical itemization weakness for Kat in an AD build is that attack speed does jack **** for her abilities, but her base attack speed sucks balls.

Edit2:

AD build outputs more of a mix of damage types, so opponents have a slightly more difficult time itemizing mitigation against you.
