Of course, if he's already fed, you're screwed.

The way to deal with Ryze is to shut him down before he starts ganking your team and getting fed.

It is impossible to face an enemy with such skill that they can flanks from top to bottom simultaneously.

Please use the attached image for reference.

Facing an enemy that can flank the top and bottom at the same time makes for quite the conundrum indeed.

As Jax, or any other melee, really--use the warp spell only after he RP you.
Ryze's Rune Prison is NOT a stun. And his other spell has pathetically short effective range. If he wants to down you, he needs to be very close to you. That's when you use your jump, and voila--he's channeling his bouncing little orbs, and you're next to him, blasting his scrawny behind. Ryze has heavy burst, but it's nothing compared to Jax after he's charged up.

The following options also work for players who like to play with other player's mind more than his characters:
-Choosing where you fight is also very important. Try to hang around minions. They can take some damage off of you, and you can also dodge their attacks to trigger Counter Attack.
-Bush dancing is also a very good option to destroy him.

As I didn't read every single other responce, I have a one word answer. "SORAKA" yes, that strange goat woman who can't kill a lick on her own. Why soraka? Her silence is INSTANT application.

"Ohh look! Ryze!" Said the Kassadin and his good friend fiddlesticks "This is going to be an easy kill!" Little did they know that at max range, ryze can cast all three spells before either of their silencing projectiles could reach him "Why Ryze WHHYYYYYYY!?!?!?" They shouted in dispair.

Then along came the goat lady. Who proceeded to instantaniously silence the purple man for three seconds, and the DPS did play.

If you need more than 3 seconds to kill a silenced ryze, get new dps

Lies, TF, Karthus, and GP can simultaneously gank both top and bot simultaneously.

As an avid ryze player I can tell you, regardless of character that Banshee's veil and flash are the best deterrents for Ryze.

A good ryze will get in range, ulti, root, spell flux/overload/auto attack.
If you let him pop his ulti then escape, a large portion of his damage is gone for 25-45 seconds (depends on his runes/cooldown).
Use this time to beat on him.
At level 18 I generally have somewhere around 1800-1900 HP but very weak armor.
An entire team focusing on ryze will make the difference in a team v team fight.
Make sure to not cluster up 100% either.
Spreading out will reduce team damage taken from Desperate Power + Spell Flux.
The majority of my multi kills are people staying too close together or walking toward each other when my spell flux is loose.

I hope this helps you a bit.

Mercury's threads and chalice go a long way to countering Ryze. Mercury's threads reduce the duration and damage of rune prison, and have magic resist to reduce every magic nuke he has. Chalice is a cheap item with 35 magic resist and is also the best friend of most champions that rely on mana.

Start the fight, when he throws spellflux flash/jump/riftwalk away so it only hits you once, if he doesn't get many spellflux jumps on you he doesn't get half of his damage, and he doesn't reduce your magic resist so you take less damage. After that just go back in and enjoy free golds. Also, if you saw him use his ult in the very beggining and you can prevent him from engaging, just go back and hold until it ends, then go for it.

imo, Ryze is nice for killing average teams(pub teams with a feeder or two), but when against a bit more skillful teams, Ryze will have a hard time wrapping up kills, the thing with Ryze is that he relies so much on bounces of flux, a veil would already do the job.

Kass : use rift walk to blink away when he uses flux or rune prison, then turn back and finish him, when Ryze misses his flux or prison, his dps is down by half already. and with his skills using frenzy, ur pulse will have no trouble stacking, it goes like,
1. pulse, silence , hit,
2. rift walk away when he uses flux
3. turn back and pulse(if available)
4. use silence after 2 or 3 seconds, because there's no point silencing him when his skills are on cool down
5. do what u have to do to kill him, if he's not dead by this time.

Jax : 1on 1 with Ryze is always tricky (actually with any mage, because they focus burst on u, not just ryze) just use whatever method to avoid the flux, no matter its flash backwards then jump back at him, or walk away and jump back at him, as long as he misses his combo, he shouldn't be able to kill u with the skills used seperately.

but honestly, there are a lot of high hp Ryze around these days, making solo killing him more difficult, not that he can kill u or anything, but he can get away no problem.
