played malzahar two or three times now, he's lots of fun, but wondering how u skill him. Usually max e and q first right now, with one point in w before Level 6. It seems like W being percentage based, would do more damage later game when they have more HP. wondering if this is how mals generally build him.

As Above, you want E>Q>W, sometimes ill take W second if the enemy has lots of high health targets or the they pack alot of kiting, making it hard to lane a Q, instead ill go W to zone them away from the team and hopefully reduce their kite/poke.

See this malzahar guide (http://www.squidoo.com/league-of-legends-malzahar-guide) for more info.

It is kind of hard to hit with his Silence AoE, so its better saved for later in team fights, rather than 1v1 laning. Hence, I level this SECOND.

His vortex thingee is percentage based, so doesnt do all that much early on for the cost. Plus its rate of improvement as your rank it is minimal. Therefore it is LAST priority.

So that leaves your Visions DOT. It hits very hard for the mana cost and also is pretty useful for harassment and farming both. As it jumps it restores your mana, making it a good laning tool. It also improves well with ranking up, so it is the clear winner and FIRST priority.

You take silence first because it is by far his best ability in level 1 team-fights, and because you can charge a voidling in base and at level 2 throw out a q+e+voidling.(which hurts like hell)

Q is not all that hard to land if you use it on an angle instead of using it perpendicular to yourself.

Usually i max E first it gives him a lot of dmg early and late, then i max Q to give him a good nuke then W for late game dmg getting his ulti whenever possible, of course.
