At max level, with some really good items, Cait can do 500 to 700 damage. Does that mean her normal attacks put out more damage than her Q?

No.

Her Q scales with your attack damage. Every 1 AD adds 1.3 damage to her Q.

Her ult scales at 2.0

Yes.

Don't look at the damage but the damage/time. Q has a 1 second channel + travel time. So taking Q scaling into account, once you have around 1 attack speed, auto attacking does more damage than your Q over the same period of time on a single target. Obv. if all 5 enemies gather in a line, nothing beats Q damage, but if you are fighting 1v1, don't lower your dps by channeling Q, keep auto attacking!!

Also, Q doesn't apply on hit affects like lizard buff or blackcleaver armor pen, and it also doesn't stack your passive.

I just have to say, at max level with a full build, you should really be hitting for like 900 w/o headshot on nontanks

Attack speed makes using your Q less efficient, but at a certain point you really need some AS to benefit your (hopefully) large AD pool.

Correct conclusion, wrong reasoning.
Travel time has absolutely nothing to do with DPS. Only the time spent acting, i.e. not attacking, is relevant.

At "around 1 attack speed," (which you hit at level 18), your auto attack will never, ever match your Q in damage. Your Q takes 1 second, has a base damage of 200 (twice your autoattack) and scales 30% better than your autoattack. In any viable build, you won't even get enough +AD that headshot from within a bush will over come the difference.

Also consider that casting does not effect the cooldown of autoattacks, so until your AS is a considerable amount above 1 AS, your Q won't even affect your autoattack damage.

However, with some +AS and some +Crit, your autoattack can quickly do more damage. If you have a Phantom Dancer at level 18, autoattacking will do more against single targets.

With enough gold, appropriate runes, masteries, etc, you can over come this difference much sooner. Watch your chance for Critical. Once it exceeds 15%, then it combined with headshot will outdo the +AD ratio on Q. Then watch for your AS, once it exceeds 1 it's not worth firing your Q because it will slow your attacks.

Before those two things are true, use Q.
