"
Swain's ult is countered by Executioner's calling active"

His healing is countered, not his dmg...sooo...

Swain, in general, is countered by Ignite, Exe's, and the various grievious wounds.

his damage is pretty much all over time, and while that time is ticking, you could be ignited, making ur ult a flop and if you were already low, you probably wont be able to finish off ur target

They're both boat loads of fun, and they both can fill different roles on a team, really, look at what champs you have, and pick Swain or Malz for whoever fills the niche you don't own, Swain is a relatively tough caster with a root and slow, whereas Malz has great nuking with a silence and suppression

Swain does great single target damage as well by leading with his E, his ult doesn't always hit the person you intend to though, but he can fill that somewhat tanky champ with a good way to CC groups, or powerful caster with good CC and decent survivability so long as you can kite with your ult on, he becomes relatively immovable from a lane after he hits 6 (so long as you can keep your mana up)

Malz does great single target damage, his full combo should be a kill unless you're doing it wrong or they get out of your ult, he is also good against tanky champs cause he can do %hp based damage, should get a kill once he hits 6 in lane

Both are relatively good laners (it does always depend on who you lane against, and how well you hit their skill shots)
Both farm well (swain with a really easy to use attack animation for last hitting, then root->ult for easy minion farm) (Malz with visions and an equally easy attack animation)
Both do great single target damage, however, Malz does more nuking, with less utility, Swain does a little less single target (reliable) damage, with more utility and survivability
(swains survivability is relative, since he has to be in the middle of the fight to be useful, so he is more easily focused, and if you do well, they WILL come after you, whereas Malz can linger at the edge of the fight a little more easily and can be tougher to get to, even if they try to focus him, since you can force them to run through your team to get to you)

Currently people haven't really found a good counter to Swain yet other then Ignite or grievous wounds etc and hope he dies quick enough. Because if you ignore him he tears your team to shreds but if you focus him it takes some time to kill him while the enemy team's carries rip you a new one. So until people have more experience facing him (you hardly ever see him) you've a real element of surprise thing going and you can rack up some good scores. His snare is also great utility once you learn how to use it properly (think Cho's spikes coming out of the ground only with a 3 times smaller surface to hit your opponent with >.<)
So basically if you like tanks/off-tanks definitely Swain, otherwise I'd say Malz.
