One of the most important roles on any team is the tank. The tank soaks up damage for the team, protects weaker teammates from harm, and takes the brunt of enemy attacks. However, I have lately seen a stream of idiots who have no clue how to tank, build a tank anyways, and then contribute nothing to the team. Here are some key points, that being a tank boils down to.

#1: You are the first to go in every fight As the team damage sponge, you are to go into every fight first. Period. Why is someone else taking the brunt of an enemy's assault? It should be you, yet if you're just sitting in the back like a nervous wreck, or waiting in a bush to ambush like some kind of giggling idiot, you're not protecting your team.

#2: Your life isn't as sacred as your team If you're a tank, don't stay out of a fight because you're afraid to get hurt. If you're afraid to get hurt, you should play Hello Kitty Online. For the love of all that is good, actually protect your team. This brings up my third point.

#3: You are responsible for your team's safety So you're in a team fight, and you see one of your squishy yet deadly allies getting rushed. Before you is a nearby enemy who is about to die. What do you do? If you chose "ignore ally and kill weak enemy," then you are not doing your job as a tank. That death isn't their fault. It's your fault. If you're not willing to protect your team, then don't play a tank. However, this brings up point 4.

#4: Don't be ignorable as a tank So you're doing everything above just fine. You're initiating, being the first in, drawing turret and baron/dragon attacks. However, as a tank, you have to do more than be indestructible. Unfortunately, if you're harmless, the enemy will ignore you. In that case, you're not doing your job. The most successful tanks can put out a lot of damage, pack disrupts and disables, or just do something that makes them unignorable (tanking that much needed turret).

#5: Be nigh indestructible It doesn't matter whether you're the selfless heroic tank who shields his/her team like a good tank should, or whether you're that obnoxious dps carry who destroys entire teams. Dying isn't fun. If you die too easily, you're not doing your job. Also, if you die, you can't tank for your team.

#6: Work with your team Remember, without your team, you have no damage. With your team though, you definitely have damage. Normally those squishy allies wouldn't dare dive a turret, but they certainly can if you tank the turret in question. Make sure you're not diving or getting beaten up for nothing though. Your team's ability to dogpile on you will determine whether you live or die. Your ability to take damage and mitigate it will determine whether your team lives or dies.

I really kinda just wrote this at a moment's notice in response to a stream of horrid tanks. It's a bit of a rant, but it should prove handy. If you're one of those people who can't tank, then you should probably read this.

In all seriousness, if you're incapable of actually tanking, then please don't play a tank. Play something else that you can actually use.

Why don't you play a tank?

The true tank not only absorbs damage, but the rage of his team mates when they make a mistake and blame the tank for it.

Working with your team is very important. But if it all goes down (2v5 gank) just run. You're both going to die before hurting them, so run like mad.

And if you're a tanky without taunt/stun, you can afford to be a bit more aggressive in lane. Make them FEAR you. Make them need to target you. Looking at Cho'Gath especially - building pure tank on him works... as long as the enemy team is really annoyed at you for protecting your carry repeatedly.

good guide.

it's also important to note that building damage for tanks is important as well. this doesn't apply to the more OFFICIAL tanks like rammus or shen, but for the less official tanks like malphite, singed, or cho'gath, it's always good to get a little bit of AP to make you less ignorable since you don't have much hard cc. ill often get an abyssal or even a zhonyas in extreme cases when i'm playing such a champ.
