Just bought Maokai.

What is a solid build for him and can he be built to fill a semi carry roll (stack AP for more burst?)should i just stick to tanky builds?

Rod of ages seems like it would be good for him as a first item.

Well, I just bought Maokai as well so sorry I'm no expert but I'm sure he's meant to be a support tank meaning that he can soak up some damage and deal some decent damage to mess up the enemies, do you have any ideas to build him because I'm just testing new build ideas with some friends before I play a real game...

btw my build:
sapphire crystal and 2 health pots
catalyst and boots then upgrade to cool down boots
Sheen and then either a banshee's or sunfire depending on the opposing team
get sunfire or banshee's which ever one that you didn't get yet
make a lich bane and lastly guardian angel
I haven't gotten that far yet to actually make a 6th item so I'm not sure what to get maybe a DeathCap for more AP? Idk

im thinking that new item would be a really good mid-late game pickup on him Morrelo's something that adds 75 AP 15% CDR and 12 mana regen.....seems like a deadly item for him after RoA/boots/banshees
or something like that.

Aswell i have not played him either but those items i think would fit him really well

I say

Sapphire 1HP pot 1 mana pot
catalyst boots
ionian boots
ROA
then is situational for tanky items
1st choises:
FON
BV
sunfire

Abyssal is never a bad choice either.

I'll definitely try out that new item some time later, I was thinking philosopher's stone early game can help him stay in the lane longer and get some extra gold and shurelia's riverie can help fill out the support role as well give you niice cool downs and a quick movement speed bonus for urself and allies because seriously Maokai is really really slow DX...

I like a hybrid build I came up with.

Tried tank, just kinda walked around doing no damage.

Tried ap, just kinda died real fast.

Now I get philosopher's stone first
boots 1
rod of ages
boots 2 (treads)
trinity force starting with sheen
Hextech Gunblade
Guardian Angel
Banshee's

sell stone near the end, use cooldown elixir if you like
I go 9/0/21 and have scaling cdr glyphs and quints with mpen red and mana/level green

With this build i can hunt people down, do decent damage in melee and at range, and have pretty good survivability through life gain, plus it's more fun than not hurting people, or dieing really fast.

Max E
1 point root
Max Q
1 point in ult at 6 and don't skill up again till the end

I'd say either pure AP Sapling tosser or tanky-CDR to makes yourself not a negligible target(460 damage per sapling is delicious)

bulky mage seems to be the typical build. builds seem to be

in no particular order:

RoA- for obvious reasons
rylai's-the slow
randuins-to keep ppl in ur ultl onger
warmogs-early game boost in survivability so u can focus on AP a bit more
QSS/FoN-against bursty mages like malzahar (free malz week is terrible...)
sunfire-works well with ur initiation
hourglass-good mix of survivability and AP for ur abilities
abyssal/void staff-for obvious reasons
all aura items (things like shurelia's/aegis)

To be honest, I have been neglecting AP in my games with Maokai and going pure tank. Sure the damage isn't great, but it works well for the team. I usually start with Mekais and grab a Tear + Warmogs, Merc Treads and then either a Randuin or FoN.
