I just started playing 2 days ago, but I think I found my character of choice - Jax.

I was looking at a couple different builds, and wasn't quite sure which way to go.

For the past couple games I have been using:
http://www.leagueoflegends-wiki.com/...k---by-emoshun

Which seems to be working well, but I don't really have the experience to know what he's capable of.

Some other guides I were looking at but haven't had a chance to use in game are:
Jax: Ultimate Hybrid by Marouka
In-Depth Look at Jax by Manatikik
Jax: Dodge, duck, dive, dip and dodge by Faustus
Jax, the Counter Specialist by jedo
Jax: Because you can by Headphones
Mighty Guide to Playing Jax by DaGhost
Stacks Jax by Hypocrix
Jax Guide by SammySpam

any suggestions as to what I should be using?

Most people will tell you to get a Rylai's. One of Jax's biggest problems is sticking to his target when he's chasing or getting kited. The Rylai's slow will help you stick to your target even though buying hitpoints on Jax is a waste.

General Build:
Doran's Ring
2 Doran's Blade
Ninja Tabi
Rylai's Scepter
Rageblade / Banshees / Hexdrinker / Deathcap / Malady / Gunblade / Abyssal Scepter / Atma's depending on game

Ideally you will build pure AP but certain games may demand you to get Hexdrinker

dodge seals and quintessences (ouch 10,000 IP for Jax)
MR/level glyphs
attack speed marks

Masteries 9/9/12 (Nimbleness ofc, neutral buff is mandatory for Twisted Treeline but in 5v5 you can drop some points from utility and build more offense or defense)

Ive played jax for months and i can say:
Build ginsuo's rageblade, bloodthirster, and phantom dancer. These are your core items because they will give you lots of hitpoints. I usually go for Survivability items afterwards, such as Randuin's Omen or/and Banshee's veil.

You want a lot of attack damage on jax. Because your relentless assault will do more damage per second with more attack speed, not necessarily having more AP. And with all the damage from bloodthirster/rageblade you dont need ability power

Watch pro livestreams, it's all AP Jax with Rylais I guarantee. It adds a LOT of punch to your Leap+Empower combo as well as your Ultimate procs. Jax is not Master Yi he does not build like a pure AD DPS.

Do what you want, but if you cant take advice from people who have played jax extensively then you're doomed to fail

He wont be USELESS with the guides you have read, but he performs best with more attack damage and speed.

Jax benefits the most from attack damage and ability power, as it gives him increased survivability from his passive. Jax will also need items to increase his innate attack speed, so that he can get stacks on Guinsoo's Rageblade and Relentless Assault quickly. Finally, he will need defensive items to ensure that he can do a good amount of damage in a team fight without being focused down.

Read this in one of the guides - from what you all have said, this is a good basic rule to follow?

You build the core build, focusing attack damage, then build survivability if your teammates are not very reliable

Usually attack damage is all you need to have sufficient health for most of the game. I just build armor or magic resist near the end of the game to mitigate excess damage, lets say, if they have a fed caster
