I just realized why Trundle needed a lore change.

Now, we have Trundle, holding his shiny new club, talking to the Ice Witch and basically becoming her servant in order to save his own skin. It seems weird that these champions (who, of course, have to be equal in game) are so drastically out-of-proportion in the lore.
Nope, Apparently Jax wins left and right if he uses a real weapon. See his lore. Also he has a skin with a weapon so... I guess that skin makes him extra awesome.

“Greetings my friends” bellowed Morello, “I called you in this morning to discuss a blight on our fine game”. The room filled with dread and a creeping silence resonated throughout chamber. “I’m talking of course of that hideous troll Trundle, he doesn’t seem to be selling well. I would like to hear your ideas how we should take care of this problem” Morello screeched at the relaunch team.

At that moment two of the robed members rose and pitched their Idea. “What if we delete Trundle, create a new champion with his kit and call him the Troll King” Muttered IronStylus. “I can tell Trundle players the relaunch will keep him the same before we kill him off for good, Ironstylus’ loyal legion of sycophants will downvote anyone who criticizes the relaunch or those that don’t agree with us’’ Cackled Grumpy Monkey.

Morello nodded with approval. “What do you intend to replace him with?” questioned Morello with a glint in his eye. IronStylus waved his hands at the door as an armed escort brought in a large hooded figure that seemed to chill the very air of the room. IronStylus smiled as he unveiled the being to reveal a bulky Ice Troll who appeared to hail from Northrend. “I present to you Trundle the Troll king, he will be allied with the upcoming Ice Witch we plan to release” Proudly Stated IronStylus. Kitae and Runaan grinned with excitement as they passionately unveiled a brown stained piece of parchment that smelled rather putrid and handed it to Morello. “The simpletons will understand this much better than his old lore. The byronic hero was too difficult for the main player base to grasp’’ Passionately explained Kitae.

As the morning began slowly drudge along as the cult tried to concoct a way to remove the original Trundle. After a short discussion Morello had a brilliant idea that he shared with the group and afterwards they all left in silence knowing what each one must do.

It was a fine brisk sunny day in Runeterra as Trundle arrived at the league, preparing for a hard day of fighting on the rift. As Trundle prepared to walk into the league Kitae passionately came running up to him and asked him to review the latest piece of lore she had written about him. Trundle waved her away and once again proceeded to enter the League. Kitae passionately grabbed Trundle and attempted to stop him from proceeding. Trundle cried out "Why, this is violence!", as this occurring Grumpy Monkey jumped out of the shadows while producing out a dagger, "Grumpy Monkey, you villain, what are you doing?" thundered Trundle as he caught Grumpy Monkey’s arm. Grumpy Monkey frightened, shouted, "Help, brother!", upon hearing this IronStylus with a malicious grin on his face came to Grumpy’s assistance and proceeded to stab Trundle several times. Within moments the rest of the cult set upon Trundle cackling as they tore him from piece to piece while the troll continued to shout “Why?”

After the deed was done announcement came that a new improved Trundle would be coming to the league, this Troll King assuming the role of Trundle was not opposed as the majority didn't care one way or the other, while a small resistance group started to fight against this horrific change. Morello pleased with the turn of events put his feet up on his desk before throwing a dart at his wall, he grinned with excitement. Urgot was now in his sights.

Since this was made into a featured discussion, I'll bite, for the third time, on this subject.

I actually do not have a problem with the concept of a retcon. I don't have a problem with him moving to the Frelijord. I don't have a problem with him no longer being afflicted with a disease or being runty either. I don't even have a problem with him being forced to serve Lissandra. My problem with him is that his core personality has changed.

Before, you could describe him as a former idealist or broken idealist. His primary motivation to take on the curse was to be loved and to be a hero. He was naive. He was bullied for being ugly and runty, and he believed that taking on the curse would make him a hero to these people and got drunk off the flighty daydream of being adored. This backfired. He eventually went to look for a cure to the plague-curse, bringing him to the Institute of War. Being confronted with the argument that he would have to return the curse to the people in order to return their regeneration to them, he once again imagined being a hero, but caught himself this time. He realized that those people would never change and kept the curse to spite them. Obviously this is not heroic, but this isn't the point (his lack of perfection may even make him more endearing or relatable to people). He stayed with the League because sharing his mind made him feel like he wasn't alone, which strongly speaks to his character and motivations.

The new Trundle is nothing like this. He even seems proactively vicious. There was no overarching threat to make him act, he didn't do it to be a hero, or even really to save the tribe. It more feels like he felt like the weak character of the Chieftain was bad for the tribe, despite there being absolutely no evidence to support it in his story. He's a very different type of person, which is disappointing since the lore could have accommodated his core character very easily by introducing that conflict and that type of mindset as a reaction.

The thing is, with skilled writing and an evolving story, he could have found a place.

The rework is just sloppy.

If you read one of the other threads, pretty much Trundle persona change was done because GM personally didn't like him, he even said so himself. Sure he had to pass it through other employee's but when it comes down to it, relaunches or not done based on what the playerbase wants or likes about the given character.

One big thing I haven't heard mentioned yet is that the original trundle was relatable, and the new one is not.

Think of it, how many people on earth can relate to the idea of being an underdog? struggling for recognition? sacrifing for others only to be rejected? loneliness? Suffering? Feeling like your life is unrewarded misery? Theses are all potent emmotions that virtually all people will experience to some degree in their lives.

And the awesomest part of his character, despite all his reasons to be bitter and angry, his in game lines are actually upbeat, humourous even. That addes volumes to his character depth.

A character that successfully brings those elements into the story is a character that I want to know more about, I want to see where he goes and how he holds up against whatever comes next. It something that draws people in.

Now look at new trundle. What does he bring to the table? Getting what you want throuh brute force? When force doesn't work use lies? Proudly being a king?...

Who in the real word relates to that? Who wants to? ... (ok so maybe some people want to relate to the being a king part. But that's kind of a whole different thing there.)

We already have a plenty of tough guy badasses in League. We have lots of hot chick badasses, we have pshyco crazy badasses, we have creepy badasses and forlorn angsty baddasses. The realm of badassery is well covered. Trundle was one of a kind in just being a guy trying to put a positive face on a miserable life.

There were plenty of ways that Trundles character could have been preserved and the new Frejlord connections still added. And there are plenty of reasons to do so. There was plenty of room to simply add a new aspect to his personality to give him motivation to interact more with the other champions. And I'll repeat my previous statement that it is an great opportunity to say that the previously unnamed necromancer in Trundle's original story turns out to be Lissandra.

But however it can be done, my point is that Trundle's original story and character are worth saving.

The league allows him to use a real weapon now, so I'd imagine he wouldn't be too terrible he he used an Real Weapon. His lore is kind of lame though in my personal opinion. Jax was the best, which was bad, give him lantern, now he is just ok. Also "IMAGINE IF I HAD A REAL WEAPON"

They won't admit that atm, but that's really what the case is.

Read through the remainder of this thread from my last posts. A lot of good points still - even better ones are still being brought up after 60-some pages.

Everything here appeals logically why trundle should just remain how he is. However, I'm convinced that will not be the case with how riot has gone so quiet on the subject. I mean the thread they stickied is about lore, where I can imagine a number of players really care more about the character theme than lore. I want my wisecracking dirty troll. I paid for my wisecracking dirty troll. I will have a RP strike if I have my wisecracking dirty troll taken from me and replaced with this cheap impostor. Dunno how many others feel that strongly, but I cannot express my disappointment with their decision making and half-truths throughout this. I wouldn't in good conscience be able to ever buy RP again.

I actually like Jax' lore in that it's not really complex, yet it's still got a lot of intrigue behind it. Why did his name get bumped up by the most powerful politician in the League? Why did said politician disappear shortly after? The former question may possibly be answered by Jax being the most baller warrior in the world, but what about the latter? It leaves room for speculation, and that's cool because whatever a person can imagine will always be more interesting than reality.
