Tao Khan, The Spirit Walker

Ionian citizens have long been in search of enlightenment, attempting to understand their spirit and be at peace with the world. But in pursuit of enlightenment, unforseen discoveries can be made.
Born in a small village in northern Ionia, Tao Khan had a peaceful childhood. When he was 14, a traveling group of monks from the Hirana monastery stayed a night in the village. A senior monk named Wu Zan noticed that Tao Khan preferred a solitary life and he invited Tao Khan to join the Hirana monastery and search for self-enlightenment. Years of meditation with guidance from Wu Zan brought Tao Khan close to enlightenment, but despite understanding his own spirit, Tao Khan could not make a connection with the world around him. Searching for a meditation that would grant him awareness, Tao Khan searched the monastery’s timeless library and eventually found an ancient tome named ‘the shadow isles’ that disclosed meditations, not used for centuries, that raise awareness and reveal a hidden power. Tao Khan practiced the meditations for days on end, and after awakening from a session he realised he was not only aware of his own soul, but of the invisible souls and spirits of all living creatures around him. Tao Khan kept the development to himself, and as he delved further into the book he discovered the spirit world, a hidden place bound to earth that houses the spirits of all creatures. Years more meditation and experimentation revealed a way for Tao Khan to enter and leave the spirit world and assist other spirits to do the same. Tao Khan read about the mythical shadow isles and learned a way to summon spirits from it, and banish living spirits back to the spirit world. Despite all of his hidden powers, Tao Khan had not reached his life goal of enlightenment.
While travelling with Wu Zan and a group of other monks, Tao Khan spent a night in his home village and saw his family for the first time in years. In the middle of the night, a band of Noxian soldiers attacked the village. The soldiers slaughtered people that opposed them in the streets and set houses on fire. Wu Zan forbid the monks from using violence to resist the soldiers and attempted to make peace with the Noxian commander, who merely laughed and killed Wu Zan on the spot. Overcome with rage, Tao Khan forgot his pacifist vows and opened gateways to the spirit world, urging spirits and lost souls to attack the Noxian soldiers. Tao Khan soon lost control over the spirits, and as the sun rose, it was revealed to him that all living creatures in the village had been slaughtered by the now dissipated souls he had summoned. Horrified by his actions, Tao Khan ran for the near forest where he attempted to live in solitude, meditating and trying to overcome his guilty conscience in order to obtain enlightenment. Realising that he had to help the world in order to make up for his actions and be at peace with himself, Tao Khan spent the next 10 years travelling throughout Valoran, walking through the living spirit realm and making trips to the shadow isles. When Tao Khan realised that he had control over both living and dead spirits and the worlds they inhabit, he returned to civilization. Tao Khan searched Ionia for a cause he could devote himself to, and with the absence of war, he joined the League of Legends.

General overview:
Tao Khan is designed to be a sustained DPS mage, capable of burst damage and prolonged damage. Tao Khan is not very tanky, but his abilities grant survivability when used wisely. Tao Khan can be build pure AP and deal large amounts of damage, or be built tanky AP, with higher base survivability but diminishing returns from his ability survivability. Early game, Tao Khan’s damage is low and his mana costs make spamming abilities difficult. His passive scales better into mid game where spamming abilities is possible thanks to his increased mana. His mid game damage is high and his utility is invaluable. Late game, unlike many mages, Tao Khan stays strong. His AP scaling passive almost turns him into a DPS mage and with maxed CDR, constant auto attacking and never missing an ability, his Q can be used every 1.2 seconds or so.

Defense power: 4
Attack power: 3
Ability power: 9
Difficulty: 10

Role: Mage, Ranged

Base stats:
HEALTH: 370 (+84)
HEALTH REGEN: 5 (+0.85)
MANA: 300 (+55)
MANA REGEN: 7.5 (+ 0.6)
ATTACK SPEED: 0.625 (+2.4%)
ARMOR: 12 (+3.8)
RANGE: 550

Passive – (Soul Division): Tao Khan’s basic attacks mark the enemy with a ‘soul siphon’ mark. When one of Tao Khan’s abilities hits a champion inflicted with soul siphon, the mark is consumed, Tao Khan’s cool downs are reduced by 1 (+ 0.00375 AP) seconds, to a maximum of 2.5 seconds and Tao Khan gains 1 stack of ‘ethereal charge’(max 1 per ability). Upon reaching 3 ethereal charges, Tao Khan gains the ability to cast an alternate set of abilities, which are empowered versions of his basic abilities. Using an empowered ability consumes all 3 ethereal charges. The two ability-sets share cool downs.

(This means that auto attacking in between abilities increases Tao Khans overall DPS and utility. The cooldown reduction from triggering a mark increases with his ability power, capping at 2.5 seconds with 400 AP, so Tao Khan just gets stronger)

Q – (Revenant): Uncharged: ACTIVE: Tao Khan sends a revenant in a line, dealing magic damage to all enemies struck. Subsequent targets take 10% less damage, down to a minimum of 40% of the total damage. Tao Khan gains a move speed buff for 1.5 seconds if an enemy is hit.

MAGIC DAMAGE: 60 / 90 / 120 / 150 / 180 (+ 50% BONUS AD) (+ 60% AP)
MOVE SPEED BUFF: 7 / 9 / 11 / 13 / 15 (%)
RANGE: 675
COOLDOWN: 6 / 5.5 / 5 / 4.5 / 4
COST:40/45/50/55/60 MANA

Charged: ACTIVE: Tao Khan sends a revenant in a line, dealing magic damage to all enemies struck. Tao Khan gains a move speed buff for 1.5 seconds if an enemy is hit. Revenant has 35% bonus spell vamp.
MAGIC DAMAGE: 75 / 110 / 145 / 180 / 215 (+ 60% BONUS AD) (+ 75% AP)

(Revenant is Tao Khan’s main damaging ability. It is on a low cool down and can be spammed to proc his passive. Using it to harass requires positioning as it does reduced damage subsequent targets hit. The move speed buff aids with his positioning. The charged version of Revenant deals more damage, has spellvamp and deals full damage to all enemies. This gives Tao Khan some sustain that scales with the game and a better harass ability/ more damage in teamfights.)

W – (Spirit Walk): Uncharged: ACTIVE: Tao Khan enters the spirit realm, becoming uninterruptable, and dashes to the target location, taking 26/32/38/44/50% reduced damage for the duration. Tao Khan damages all enemies that are struck by the dash.

MAGIC DAMAGE: 50 / 85 / 120 / 155 / 190 (+ 40% BONUS AD) (+ 60% AP)
COOLDOWN: 16 / 14 / 12 / 10 / 8
RANGE: 700
COST: 70 / 80 / 90 / 100 / 110 MANA

Charged: ACTIVE: Tao Khan enters the spirit realm, becoming uninterruptable, and dashes to the target location, taking 26/32/38/44/50% reduced damage for the duration. Tao Khan damages all enemies that are struck by the dash and slows them by 20//25/30/35/40% for 2 seconds.

(Spirit Walk is Tao Khan’s escape ability and can be used for superior positioning in team fights. However, it also has good AP scaling, damage and the charged version has good CC. Tao Khan players are rewarded for taking risks and going all in. There is a damage reduction that is effective while the dash is in progress, but the shot cast time (0.7 seconds or so) means that timing is vital. Spirit Walk is uninterruptable, but Tao Khan will be affected by any CC immediately after the cast time. Spirit Walk can be cast over walls and terrain.)

E – (Corporeal Fracture): Uncharged: ACTIVE: Tao Khan sends the target unit through the spirit world, dealing magic damage and knocking the target back 450 units. If the target is knocked into a wall Tao Khan heals himself and the target is stunned for 1.5 seconds.

MAGIC DAMAGE: 60 / 90 / 125 / 160 / 200 (+ 65% AP)
HEAL AMOUNT: 40 / 70 / 100 / 130 / 160 (+7% MAXIMUM MANA)
RANGE: 625
COOLDOWN: 20 / 18 / 16 / 14 / 12
COST: 70 / 80 / 90 / 100 / 110 MANA

Charged: ACTIVE: Tao Khan sends the target unit through the spirit world, dealing magic damage and knocking the target back 450 units. If the target is knocked into a wall, Tao Khan heals himself and the target is stunned for 1.5 seconds. Tao Khan drains some power from the target’s soul, reducing their armour and magic resist by 10 / 12.5 / 15 / 17.5 / 20 % and increasing Tao Khan’s resists by the same amount for 4 seconds.

(Corporeal Fracture is a knockback and makes a great kiting ability. With superior positioning, knocking a target into a wall will stun them and heal Tao Khan. Corporeal Fracture has a fairly long cool down so it should be used wisely. The charged version of Corporeal fracture transfers some resistances from the target to Tao Khan for a short duration, making it a good ability to use in duels or in team fights when an enemy is stacking resistances.)

R – (Spectral Wolf) : Active: Tao Khan summons an un-targetable spirit wolf that attacks the last enemy Tao Khan auto attacked. On the first attack upon an enemy, the spirit wolf shreds their spirit, reducing their magic resist by 15/25/35 for 4 seconds.
Re-activation: Upon reactivation, Tao Khan switches place with the spirit, dealing damage to, and fearing, all enemy champions within an area of both Tao Khan and the spirit for 1 second. The spirit dissipates and after 1 second, Tao Khan gains a shield for a % of the damage dealt which lasts for 3.5 seconds.

MAGIC DAMAGE ON ACTIVATION: 150 / 225 / 300 (+80% AP)
SHIELD AMOUNT:20/25/30 (%) (+0.04 AP(%)) OF DEALT DAMAGE ( CAP: 550/880/1300)
COOLDOWN: 150/120/90
COST: 100 / 125 / 150 MANA

(Spectral Wolf is a summon ability, but not like most others. It deals no upfront damage, only shredding magic resistance and allowing for positioning before damage is dealt, The wolf follows the last target that Tao Khan has auto attacked and will change targets accordingly. Because the wolf shreds MRES upfront for a period of time, rotating targets leads to the most efficient use. On Re-activation, Tao Khan switches place with the spirit and damage is dealt to enemies around Tao Khan and the spirit. Enemies that are damaged are also feared for 1 second. This allows for yet more positioning tricks, more AOE damage and some short hard CC which is useful for interrupting abilities. On top of that, after a 1 second delay, Tao Khan gains a shield based on the dealt damage, allowing for initiation and survivability when in the middle of a team fight. Building pure AP leads to higher damage and a higher shield, building tankier leads to lower damage and a lower shield. Because this scales off of damage done, this won’t ever be overpowered.)

Tao Khan is a hooded figure, surrounded by wispy mist. He is holding a ball of white light in his right hand and a glowing white pendant(in the shape of the soul siphon mark) hangs on a chain in his left hand. He is wearing ragged layered leather armour, mostly brown, but with gold and blue trim on the shoulders, knees, elbows, ribs and on the cowl. A pair of sharpened reindeer horns protrude from the back of his armour, rising up above his head. A golden emblem of a wolf is on the centre of his chest. His head is mostly covered by a cowl and only the bottom of his face is visible (looks human).

Auto Attack animation: A crisp animation, similar to Orianna’s but with mildly faster travel time. The projectile itself is a rounded sliver of golden white light.

Soul Siphon: The mark appears in the shape of a ghostly blue circle with a vertical, squiggly line moving through it, hovering above a champions head. Upon activation, the mark flashes white, disappears and a wisp of blue mist momentarily swirls up and around Tao Khan.

Ethereal Charges: A blue soul (a flickering orb that slowly changes shape) hovers above Tao Khans head, slowly orbiting for each ethereal charge. Upon using an empowered ability, the souls quickly descend towards Tao Khan and disappear.

Q- Revenant: Uncharged: Tao Khan throws a Revenant from his right hand in a line. The Revenant trails golden mist which rises for 0.5 seconds after casting. The Revenant itself is a ghostly golden bird that quickly changes shape into a bear then a fish, which disappears when it reaches its range.
Charged: When charged, revenant is brighter and whiter in colour.

W- Spirit walk: Uncharged: Tao Khan rapidly spins around, turning into a swirl of faint blue mist with bright sparks in it which rapidly moves to the target rotation, spins in the same direction that he originally did and turns back into Tao Khans human form.
Charged: The spirit walk mist becomes brighter. Spirit walk leaves behind a line of faint blue light, similar to the border of Hecarim’s ‘spirit of the dread’, which fades rapidly.

E- Corporeal Fracture: Uncharged: Tao Khan raises his left hand (pendant) rapidly and a flash of golden-white light appears around the target, knocking them back.
Charged: The same thing happens but after raising his hand, a covering of golden light, similar to when Thresh absorbs dropped souls, surrounds him for the duration of the buff.

R- Spectral Wolf: Upon casting, Tao Khan claps his hands together above his head, the wolf emblem on his armour flashes white and a ghostly wolf flashes into existence next to him. Upon re-activation, instantaneously, Tao Khan appears in the wolf’s place with his hands raised. The wolf appears in Tao Khans place and turns into smoke that quickly dissipates. The shield is granted in the form of a barrier of moving golden mist that is shaped like a dome.

Tao Khan has a passive, serious personality. He is not depressed but is not optimistic or happy either. Tao Khan is clever and not aggressive or egotistic. He has a distinct dislike of being around people. He understands the extent of his powers, but is moral enough to want to use them for good.

Tao Khan’s voice is deep but human. He speaks in a passive, peaceful voice, with a mostly neutral tone and emphasis.

• ‘They cannot stop me, I walk in two worlds’

• ‘I walk alone’
• ‘I will go where I please’
• ‘The spirit world beckons’
• ‘My conscience is heavy’
• ‘So many lost souls’
• ‘your soul is mine’
• ‘you are no match for the spirit realm’
• ‘death is but a new beginning’
• ‘Feel the wrath of risen souls’

• ‘(meditates)I am at peace’
• ‘make your move’
• ‘Power comes at a cost’

• ‘I’ll be back’

• low pitched melodic semi-laugh

• ‘Your spirit has the integrity of a Noxian official’

• ‘A woman married a spectre. I don’t know what possessed her’

This took a while to design. I must have re-done the abilities around 5 times and adjusted the scaling about 20 times. I have looked at other champions abilities and base stats to try and make a balanced champion that would actually work, and be possible to use within LOL. Iv'e read something about legal technicalities to do with this stuff, so...

I am the owner of this idea, however I void all rights over the idea if Riot wants to use any of the concepts posted here, or the champion as a whole(Which is incredibly unlikely).

Anyway, this is my first proper champion design. I would appreciate some constructive feedback, so please comment and up vote if you like what you see!

holy cow, this champion sounds amazing! and you must have worked on it for at least a month! Interesting use of the passive to apply a second phase to all abilities with additional benefits but it does seem like it would be difficult in many situations to get the second set of abilities in time.

Thanks for the feedback! I wanted to make a champion with a high skill cap that would still be usable by newer players. My solution was the passive. I figured, the CDR with the auto attack>ability spacing would give higher a DPS, but would put you in danger. So, the 'soul siphon' part of the passive was brought in to give Tao Khan some utility to balance out the risky positioning.
