ELO is a rating system kind of like what they use for Chess. If you google it, there's a League of Legends Wikia that talks more about it and how the math works. Basically, the more you win, the higher your score. ELO deteriorates if you're inactive or lose a lot of games.

Hope this helps!

It's how Matchmaking finds teams.

Think of it as your ranking or a rough estimate on your "skill level".

Also it should be noted that technically Elo (note E.L.O.) no lomger exists.

League of Legends now uses the advanced MMR/Matchmaking Rating system which takes games played, wins, and elo into account.

^ Yeah that's it but you will hear people still saying Elo all the time... I know I do a lot even though I technically mean MMR.

I'm pretty sure MMR is still derived from an Elo based system, so not only is it going to stick around for the same reason magic terms are coined ('milling,' etc), but it will still be mostly appropriate.

I honestly think the name change is just a response to the 'what the hell guys, Elo is for chess, a 1v1 game, why are we using it in team games???'
